1. Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I'm Elaine, I am from Brazil and I have a degree in Communication, History, and Society & Culture. I love environmentalism and music (particularly, simple and deep voices that express feelings about about love and life and nature.) I also have an interest in sexuality issues and spirituality, and strive to make the world a just, equal and more nature-centered place.
Eu sou Elaine, brasileira, adoro assuntos como preservação ambiental em toda sua profundidade, sexualidade, espiritualidade, música (principalmente simples e intensa, vozes que falam do amor e da vida no campo, sertaneja de coração, com raízes e emoção). Um mundo com justiça, igualdade e completamente envolvido com a Natureza é um algo que gostaria muito de ver concretizado.
2. How did you become an on-line volunteer?
I was researching organizations on-line and found out about GYAN, the Global Youth Action Network. I contacted GYAN and they introduced me to TIG... and I have been a member ever since!
Buscando dentro da internet. Encontrei o site do GYAN e através dele fui parar no TIG. Entrei em contato, fui aprovada e hoje estou aqui.
3. What kind of tasks do you normally perform?
I focus mostly on translations from English to Portuguese, but I also read most of our members' submissions in that language. As such, I am responsible for approving content submitted to sections of the site like Panorama and the Global Gallery. Lastly, I collaborate with the other on-line volunteers in the team on a regular basis.
Traduções de Inglês para Português, envio conteúdo de diferentes assuntos, leio e vejo muitas coisas que os membros enviam para o site do TIG para aprovar ou não. Converso e tento incentivar outros voluntários também. Ajudar sempre da melhor forma possível.
4. What are your overall thoughts on the experience?
I have learned a lot over the years, especially for what concerns global issues. I think the experience is a very good one, though it is important to always keep the needs of the volunteers in mind and for the principles of volunteering to be practiced off-line, too. Of course, on-line volunteers would also benefit from in-person contact, but where that's not always possible, there are ways of establishing connections capable of having an impact through technology.
Eu aprendi muito, sobre diferentes assuntos, sem dúvida uma experiência interessante, mas o trabalho voluntário através da internet precisa ser colocado em prática na vida real também, em contato direto com outros envolvidos para funcionar melhor, obter mais resultados, algo nem sempre fácil de se conseguir!
5. Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
Don't forget: First and foremost, work to be an ambassador of your country, your language, and your culture. Be proud of where you come from but remain open-minded about the possibility of changing your mind. Be eager to learn from other cultures and to engage in intercultural exchanges with a sense of compassion and respect for other human beings and for nature!
Não se esqueça: Trabalhe pelo seu País em primeiro lugar, pela sua língua original com orgulho para depois trocar idéias e conversar com pessoas de diferentes culturas no mundo, com afeto, amor, Deus no coração, união e respeito pela Natureza e pelo ser humano, coisas que não podem caminhar separadas!

I am interested in anything that has to do with: active citizenship, ethical banks, time banks, ethical tourism, environmental justice, citizen journalism, creative problem solving, documentaries, ethical living, fair trade, good governance, international development, peak oil and veganism… To name only a few!
