The Climate Blog Day: What will you do?

October 24 is the international day for climate change. TO so many people, though, they feel the impact of climate change, do not for once think of doing something to at least alleviate its impacts.

You know what? the ozone layer is buring, our rivers dried up, trees yielding little or not fruits. The people in local communities are feeling these impacts in diverse ways, which they cannot explain or understand what it stands for.

ON the 24 october, its bent on every young activists and changemakers to use the opportunity to create awareness to his/her community on the impacts of climate change.

Global Desert Outlook

The Global Deserts Outlook is the first thematic assessment report in the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) series of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). A UNEP contribution to the International Year of Deserts and Desertification in 2006, the report aims to help raise global public awareness of the state of the world’s deserts.

The Global Deserts Outlook presents a panorama of the environmental status of the world’s deserts: their location and extent, uniqueness and vulnerability, biodiversity and natural resources. The report provides a balanced picture of deserts as ecosystems which form a special part of the world’s natural and cultural heritage, and not simply as land that is the end result of the process of desertification. Few places on earth contain a richer collection of natural adaptations to the environment.

Readers are challenged to consider the development potential of deserts and their conservation needs, to explore what would be the most appropriate and sustainable livelihoods for people living in desert areas. Deserts do not have much water, but they do have other natural resources. The knowledge and technology exist to manage these resources sustainably; the challenge lies with determining and implementing appropriate actions for desirable long-term outcomes.

How to Remove Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications

Windows genuine advantage notifications occur when your computer hasn't passed the validation test. The validation test can be failed due to being sold a pirated (non-genuine) copy of XP, or because you have changed your XP product key to a software-generated key, or sometimes it just happens for no reason at all. The failed validation installs three types of notifications on your computer: one on the log in screen, one log in timer, and one balloon. It also stops updates from Microsoft and disables your ability to install IE7 and Windows Media Player 11. This solution can get rid of all three notifications, even though you will still not be able to update through Windows Update. You will not be able to download things from Microsoft that requires a valid license either.

Steps

If you have only just installed Windows Genuine Advantage notifications, simply using the system restore function will remove the program. Then refuse to accept the WGA update next time Windows updates... Otherwise, proceed as detailed below. (NOTE: If you try these steps while you are in "Safe Mode," step #8 is unnecessary).
First Try the Following:
- Open a CMD Line Window by Clicking on Start ==>Run ==> type CMD and Press OK.
- Change Directory into the System32 Folder (Like Cd c:WindowsSystem32)
- Open a notepad Window and type the following lines:
taskkill -IM wgatray.exe
del wgatray.exe
del wgalogon.dll
- Highlight and copy to the Clipboard the three lines above
- now Paste the the contents of the Clipboard to the CMD Window
This should kill the wgatray.exe Process from the Taskbar and imediately delete both files wgatray.exe and wgalogon.dll without the need to to go through all steps bellow.
If that does not work, then continue and follow the steps bellow
Open System32 by either A or B of the following methods:
- a) Click "Start", "Run", then type-in "System32". Click "Okay".
- b) Find System32 manually by clicking "Start" > "My Computer" > "(X:)" (Replacing "X" with the drive letter of the host of Windows) > "Windows" > "System32".
In "System32", go to "Tools" > "Folder options" > click on the tab, "View" > Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types". Now you can begin...
Check to make sure the window that comes up has a full screen of various files. The files are in alphabetical order, which makes it easier to locate the specific file.
Find "WgaLogon.dll" and rename it "WgaLogon.dll.bak".
Create an empty copy of WgaLogon.dll:
- Right click on a blank space in System32 and select "New" > "Text Document".
- Leave the text document empty and label it "WgaLogon.dll". Press Enter (on your keyboard).
- You may get a warning from the above step that says, "If you change a file name extension, the file may become unusable. Are you sure you want to change it?". Click "Yes" on this warning.
Be ready to complete the next two steps very quickly! Find "WgaTray.exe" in "System32" and delete it. You will then have 5 seconds to find "WgaTray.exe" in the Task Manager (the next step). NOTE: If you remove the files mentioned above while you are in "Safe Mode," step #8 is unnecessary.
Immediately open Task Manager. You can do this by pressing the Ctrl, Shift, and Esc keys simultaneously, pressing the Ctrl, Alt, and Delete keys simultaneously, or right clicking the Taskbar and selecting "Task Manager". Click on the process tab and click end process when "WgaTray.exe" is selected. Note: If you take longer, do not panic! All that will happen is that "WgaTray.exe" will keep reapearing in the processes list (i.e. you won't be able to delete it as required). To remove the notifications after this, return to system32. You will find two files:"WgaLogon.dll.bak" (the one you renamed) and an Application Extension (0KB) called "WgaLogon.dll". Delete the Application Extension, rename "WgaLogon.dll.bak" to "WgaLogon.dll" and repeat the steps from the fifth one onwards (at a greater speed!!).
Restart your computer once you have finished. All the notification messages should be gone.

Tips

This process will only get rid of the notifications, and will not validate your copy of XP. It will remove the timer at the beginning of your XP log on, the white notice on the log on screen, and the annoying yellow star that appears in the bottom right corner of the screen.
This is easier to do if you have someone reading the steps to you while you do it.
You may need to Find Hidden Files and Folders in Windows to get to System32 manually.
If task manager programs are moving, click the title of the "image name" row to freeze them.
If you are having problems after this, disable the updates before rebooting.
There is a program called RemoveWGA which does all of this for you. Just run the program, click yes, and you're done. (See External Links, below.)
If you have problems changing files in the System32 directory, you will have to turn off "system restore". "Start" -> "Control Panel" -> "System" -> "System Restore" -> Check the "Turn off system restore" check box.
You will not be able to download Automatic Updates anymore. This is not to say you cannot update your system anymore, Microsoft just won't do it for you. In the links, there is a program that will allow you to update any system, regardless of if it is genuine or not.
You can also rename WgaTray.exe to WgaTray.exe.bak if you can't remove WgaTray.exe from your Taskbar.
It will be useful to have task manager open first before deleting WgaTray.exe
Unlocker is a free program that can assist in removing WGA notifications.

Warnings

Do not edit anything but this in System32, or it could cause system start up failure.
If you are new to computers, do not attempt this because if you modify the wrong file you may crash your computer.
This is not required for systems older than Windows XP, as older versions of Windows do not have WGA installed. This list includes Windows 2000 and Windows 98SE.

New Central Bank Governor - Nigeria

Malam Sanusi Lamido, dressed in black suit, white shirt and a red bow tie Sanusi was on June 03, 2009 confirmed as the new Governor for the Central Bank of Nigeria, the country’s Apex Bank.

At the senate floor Malam Sanusi laid down his monetary and fiscal plans with a promise to draw from his deep experience in risk management to effect a robust regulation of the industry with a promise to build on his predecessor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo’s monetary and fiscal achievements.

Malam Sanus stood for almost 180 minutes before the Senate and robustly defended the aggressive marketing of products by banks affirming that banks’ drive for deposits was a crucial element of banking.

In his words “...The advantage of being a risk manager historically is that the risk manager has always been an internal regulator. My job has always been to get the bank do the right thing...”

Mr. Tunde Lemo was also confirmed by the Senate to serve a second term as the deputy Governor of the apex bank after a short session before the Senate.

Joint Task Force (JTF)- Not the way out!

The possibility of the Federal Government of Nigeria to fully take over militant camps and more so capture the militants without the poor masses especially children and women being affected is unimaginable.

As reported by the Punch Newspaper of May 18, 2009 about 50 bodies on the street of Okerenkoko were found dead by Mrs. Esther Eneh, a displaced person who escaped during the incident; 30,000 people already trapped. In the twinkle of an eye indigenous people have become refugees

I am totally not in support with the idea of the Presidency using jet fighters to shell the communities suspected to be militant camps. This shows lack of respect for “human right to life”.

For ten (10) year since the emergence of democracy, the government have attended several dialogue. It baffles me as to what agreement they reached during the dialogue that instead of peace its becoming worst than the past.

Its high time Nigeria step out of much talks and begin practical approaches to issues.
In my opinion the Federal Government or Presidency (whatever) should be able to ask the militant what sort of development there are advocating for.

As the militants do send e-mails, they government should directly ask them out.
I believe this alternative would bring quick solution to the Niger Delta problems.

1945: Rejoicing at end of war in Europe

The Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, has officially announced the end of the war with Germany.

In a message broadcast to the nation from the Cabinet room at Number 10, he said the ceasefire had been signed at 0241 yesterday at the American advance headquarters in Rheims.

Huge crowds, many dressed in red, white and blue, gathered outside Buckingham Palace in London and were cheered as the King, Queen and two Princesses came out onto the balcony.

Earlier tens of thousands of people had listened intently as the King's speech was relayed by loudspeaker to those who had gathered in Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square.

Winston Churchill made a broadcast to the nation, and in his wonderful and dramatic way told us that war was over

In it he paid tribute to the men and women who had laid down their lives for victory as well as to all those who had "fought valiantly" on land, sea and in the air.

The act of unconditional surrender is to be ratified in Berlin today - but in the interest of saving lives the ceasefire came into effect yesterday.

In his speech, Mr Churchill said: "We may allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing; but let us not forget for a moment the toil and efforts that lie ahead. Japan with all her treachery and greed, remains unsubdued.

"We must now devote all our strength and resources to the completion of our task, both at home and abroad. Advance Britannia."

Even after dark, floods of people continued to converge on some of London's great monuments, floodlit specially for the occasion. There were fireworks, too, and effigies of Hitler burned on bonfires around the capital.

Later Mr Churchill was greeted by cheering crowds as he made his way to Whitehall and appeared on the flag-bedecked balcony of the Ministry of Health.

"God bless you all," he said over the loudspeaker, which was greeted with further cheering and waving from the crowd and a round of "For he's a jolly good fellow".

Today in History - April 30, 1993: Tennis star stabbed

Monica Seles was the world number one women's tennis player, and was stabbed in the back during a quarter-final match in Hamburg.

The 19-year-old American star was rushed to hospital with a wound half an inch (1.5cm) deep in her upper back. Doctors said her injuries were serious, but not life-threatening.

"She was very lucky," said the tournament doctor, Peter Wind. "Neither the lungs nor the shoulder blades were affected. Monica is still suffering from shock, and will stay overnight for observation."

There was immediate speculation that the attack was politically motivated because of Monica Seles's Serbian roots. She is known to have received death threats in connection with the Yugoslav conflict.

But Hamburg police were quick to rule this out. They described her attacker as a 38-year-old man from East Germany, and said he appeared confused and may be mentally disturbed. Later reports suggested he may have been a fan of tennis rival Steffi Graf.

The attack happened during the rest break in the match, against Bulgarian player Maggie Maleeva. Miss Seles was leading 6-4, 4-3 when she took a rest on her courtside seat during the changeover.

A man described as stocky and balding leaned over the three-feet-high (91 cm) barrier and stabbed her from behind. Miss Seles let out a scream, clutched her back and stumbled on to the court.

The attack took place in full view of the 6,000-strong crowd watching the match.

"He held the knife with both hands as he stabbed her in the back," said one eyewitness.

The umpire, Stefan Voss, ran from his chair for ice and a towel.

"Nobody saw him coming," he said. He described the 10-inch (25cm) long knife, which fell on the floor following the attack, as "a kitchen knife, like the sort you cut meat with. It was very sharp."

Gunter Parche, a 39-year-old unemployed lathe operator, was convicted for the stabbing of Monica Seles in October 1993.
He was described as a loner, whose obsession with seeing Steffi Graf regain the world no.1 ranking prompted the attack. He was given a two-year suspended sentence.

It was over two years before Monica Seles returned to tennis competition. Her first tournament was the 1995 Canadian Open, which she won.

However, her career never fully recovered from the incident. She is ranked fourth in the world, and reached three Grand Slam quarter-finals in 2000. But she suffered from increasing injury problems.

In February 2005, she played two exhibition matches in New Zealand against Martina Navratilova.

Although Seles lost both matches, she played competitively and was reportedly free from pain in her problematic foot.

In December 2005, she announced that she could return to the game early in 2006.

This day in History - April 08, 1953: Seven years' hard labour for Kenyatta

Jomo Kenyatta was sentenced to seven years hard labour for his part in the organisation of the rebel Mau Mau movement.
The leader of the Kenya African Union, who was found guilty on all charges, was also given three years hard labour to run concurrently for being a member of the movement.

Five others, Fred Kubai, Richard Achieng, Bildad Kaggia, Paul Ngei and Kungu Karumba were also sentenced to seven years hard labour for assisting in the management of Mau Mau.

Kenyatta told the court he and his colleagues were not guilty but that they stood for the rights of the African people and peace in Kenya.

The outlawed Mau Mau movement has terrorised and murdered countless Europeans and Africans for the past five years during its campaign for Kenyan independence.

'Little humanity'

Heavy security surrounded the courthouse in Kapenguria throughout the trial.

The road from Kitale was patrolled by armoured cars and road blocks were manned by armed police.

All members of the public and the media were searched before entering the building and armed guards patrolled outside during the trial.

In passing sentence the judge, Ransley Thacker, told Kenyatta: "You have successfully plunged many Africans back to a state which shows little humanity.

"You have persuaded them in secret to murder, burn and commit atrocities which will take many years to forget."

He added: "Make no mistake about it, Mau Mau will be defeated."

During the 58-day trial it was suggested by the defence that the Mau-Mau movement did not even exist - this was rejected by Mr Thacker.

Kenyatta was also given several opportunities to denounce the illegal movement which he refused to do.

At the end of the trial the defence counsel indicated that an immediate appeal would be lodged.

CONTEXT

Jomo Kenyatta's appeal failed.
He was never a member of the Mau Mau and his trial is generally regarded by historians to have been rigged by the British.

He completed his sentence on 14 April 1959 and was freed from all restrictions in August 1961.

On 28 October 1961 he became president of the Kenyan African National Union (Kanu).

In June 1963 Mr Kenyatta took control as the first prime minister of a self-governing Kenya.

The following year Kenya broke its last ties with Britain and became a Republic within the Commonwealth with Mr Kenyatta as its president. He remained in office until his death in 1978.

His government had included more people who had fought against Mau Mau than had participated in the rebellion.

The ban on the Mau Mau as an organisation was only lifted by the Kenyan Government in August 2003.

Dozens of major cities in the United States have been rocked by an escalation in the race riots which began on April 4, 1968

At least 19 people have died so far in the arson, looting and shootings provoked by the assassination of black civil rights leader Martin Luther King on 4 April, 1968.

Several hundred have also been injured and about 3,000 people have been arrested - most of those in Washington DC.

Curfews are in place in many areas of the country and National Guard soldiers have been mobilised to help quell the violence which is threatening to engulf the US in a race war.

Twelve thousand troops in the nation's capital were called on to help protect fire fighters tackling at least eight blazes started by rioters.

Other fires started in Chicago were accompanied by looting and sniping, and at least 20 buildings have been completely destroyed.

There have also been 38 arson attacks in Detroit, shootings reported in Pittsburgh and a four-hour gun battle at Tennessee State University.

Dr King's immediate successor, Reverend Ralph Abernathy, has repeatedly appealed for calm.

The new head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Atlanta has appeared on television urging people to respect the murdered leader's commitment to non-violent protest.

But United Black Front chairman Lincoln Lynch said black Americans should adopt a new stance.

"It is imperative to abandon the unconditional non-violent concept expounded by Dr King and adopt the position that for every Martin Luther King who falls, 10 white racists will go down with him.

"There is no other way - America understands no other language," he said.

The race riots spread to more than 100 US cities and the violence did not abate until 14 April.

James Earl Ray was convicted of his murder and sentenced to 99 years in prison. But he later retracted his confession and said he had been only a minor player in a conspiracy.

However, his appeals for a new trial were rejected and he died in prison in 1998.

Three Executives at MySpace Departs to Start New Company

Three executives at MySpace are leaving the company to form their own startup, led by COO Amit Kapur. He will be joined by senior VP of technology Jim Benedetto and and senior VP of product strategy Steve Pearman. They have internally announced their departures, we have been able to confirm with the company.

MySpace is well into its monetization phase, and is facing increasing competition from Facebook, which is larger worldwide than MySpace and may soon overtake it in the U.S. as well. The growth and the big rewards that go with growth, may now be easier to find elsewhere. Kapur, Benedetto, and Pearman are voting with their feet.

Possible successors to Kapur for the COO post include Adam Bain (a FIM hotshot who heads up the Fox Audience Network), Jeff Berman (head of sales and marketing for MySpace), and Travis Katz (head of MySpace international). External candidates, assuming they’d want the job, might be departing Yahoo Mobile exec Marco Boerries, former Yahoo SVP Brad Garlinghouse, Playlist CEO Owen Van Natta (who at one point was considering the MySpace Music CEO position), or Benchmark’s Entrepreneur-in-Residence Dave Goldberg.

The Bills bans iPhones and iPods in their home

Bill Gates's sprawling Washington state compound is, as you might expect, packed to the gills with bleeding-edge gear, from the heated floors and 20-seat home theater to the X-ray machine (for screening the mail, of course) and miles of fiber-optic cabling. But here's what you definitely won't find at chez Gates: an iPhone.

In the latest issue of Vogue, Bill's wife, Melinda Gates, reveals that among the "very few things" on "the banned list in our household" are—you guessed it—iPods and iPhones.

Brutal, yes—especially for Bill and Melinda's three kids (two daughters and a son, aged 12, six, and nine, respectively), who'll just have to grin and bear it as their little pals make merry with the latest and greatest iPod.

And even Melinda herself admits to an occasional pang of Apple envy: "Every now and then I look at my friends and say, 'Ooh, I wouldn't mind having that iPhone.'" (Ouch!)

Then again, what else did we expect from Microsoft founder Bill Gates? The man has his pride, not to mention scores of Windows Mobile and Zune team members who'd probably feel a tad bit hurt if Bill Jr. was running around with an iPhone.

Nigeria and China is once again on course to build a new satellite to replace the NigComSat-1 which dissappeared 18 months after its successful launch in orbit on November 10, 2008 as a result of power failure, leaving businesses and corporate organisations into a dilema since there was no backup.

-The NigComSat-1 built at the cost of $256m became the first Africa geosynchronous Communicatin Satellite when it was launched.

-A consortium of international insurance firm for the NigComSat include; SpaceCo of France, Munich Cray of Germany, Peoples INusrance Company of China, etc.

-Completin of the new NigComSat-1 will be in the last quarter of 2010.

Other satellites built in Europe, Asia and America have in the last 18 months lost in space - Intelsat 802; Thaicom 3 built by Europe-based Alcatel; Alenia Space, HOt bird 3 owned and operated by Eutelsat; PAS-6 Com Sat; RASCOM, QAF-1 and Galaxy 26.

However, NIgeria should consider launching the NigComSat-1 together with the NIgComSat-2 as back up to avoid putting businesses in jeopardy of loss or hack of vital records or corporations.

FIFA Magical Evening

FIFA brought to live on January 12, 2009 what it called "the magical evening" as two prestigious persons were honourned as FIFA world best -men and women football.

The proceedings started with the rhythm of the works of Georg Friedrich Handel, wonderfully performed by the Zurich Philharmonic Orchestra, while presenting duties were carried out by Swiss sports journalist Rainer Maria Salzgeber and Dutch actress and model Sylvie van der Vaart, wife of Real Madrid and Netherlands midfielder Rafael.

After an opening speech by FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter which recalled the biggest moments of the year just passed, the time arrived to pay homage to the outstanding performers at the FIFA competitions held in 2008.

First up were the ladies, with the likes of Dzsenifer Marozsan, Taylor Vancil and Mana Iwabuchi, who starred at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup New Zealand, as well as Sydney Leroux and Alyssa Naeher, who lit up the women's U-20 event in Chile, making an appearance alongside established stars such as Marta, Cristiane and Nadine Angerer.

The male nominees are Kaká (Brazil), Lionel Messi (Argentina), Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), Fernando Torres (Spain), and Xavi (Spain).

Finally,the man voted the finest player on planet football in 2008 by the world's national team coaches received his award from Brazilian icon Pele, O Rei (The King) handing the coveted trophy to none other than Cristiano Ronaldo. "I would be wrong if I did not thank everyone in my life - family, friends and teammates - who helped me get to this point," commented the United and Portugal star.

The title of the final piece of music played by the Zurich Orchestra perfectly summed up the evening's events, particularly for Ronaldo and Marta. That music was Handel's "La Réjouissance", one of five movements of his work "Royal Fireworks Music", a suitably fitting way to draw the curtain on the FIFA World Player Gala 2008.

Connecting Africa through ICT

Theme: "Connecting Africa,focus on ICT Broadband infrastructure and Universal Access."

(November 27-29) A three-day ninth edition of the Africa Investment Summit organized by the Ministry of Communications and ICT, Benin and Kemilinks International

The summit takled issues on how countries in African would appreciate and commit to digital broadcasting.
One of the highpoint was the challenges of transition from analog to digital broadcasting and universal access for telecom and broadcasting sectors on the continent.

South Africa and Kenya are infrastructurally and policy ready to switch over to digital broadcasting as early as 2009. South Africa started since 2005 while Kenya was march 14, 2007. South Africa switch on its digital transmission backbone earlier in November for testing and by 2011 will switch off analog equipment while kenya started licensing signal distribution in August 2008 and hopes to switch on its digital switch in Seteber 2009.

Challenges abound for other African countries to switch - political will, funding, awareness, policy and regulatory framework, capacity building, frequency allocation and consumer adoption.

Can this feat be achieved in the earliest posible time?

World AIDS Day

I want to inspire my fellow peers in cambodia to initiate an event to mark the World AIDS day. More resources to host this even can be found on www.worlaidscampaign.org and www.youthaidscoalition.org

On the 29th of November, 2008 GYCA, Akwa Ibom State chapter is collaborating with other stakeholders to host a Pre-World AIDS Day "Peer Education Session".

This event is aim at encouraging young people to become actively involved in the fight to stop AIDS. I believe the penetration of AIDS is also affecting the young cambodians. We cant afford to see our future tarnished by a certain disease. We have the strength and all it takes to stop AIDS.

World AIDS Day and Youth

The theme of World AIDS "Leadership" Day is a medium for young people to actively participate in the struggle to end the pandemic.

I have come to see that the older generation are somehow free, but our generation may end up living 65% positive in some regions - increase in the rate of bachelors and spinsters cos no one would really love to raise HIV positive kids.

Looking at the subthemes -lead, empower, deliver. our Government must also see that they owe us (young people) true leadership, empowerment - such that would discourage sex work and drug abuse, and also see to it that they deliver their promises to the citizenry - building infrastructures for development -social, economic, educational, etc.

Adams Oshiomole is the Governor of Edo State

Today, the Nigeria Appeal Court confirms former President of Nigeria’s Labour Union, NLC, Comrade Adams Oshiomole of Labour Party as the Governor of Edo state after his victory at the Tribunal.

His words " i congratulate the Judiciary for proving the just, and thank Nigerian who supported me in diverse measures to make today a reality"

From this indication, it shows that the court is moving on the right direction in Nigeria and the rule of law of the Umaru Musa Ya'Adua's government is receiving good marks from the masses.

Oshiomole stated that the suffering and struggle of the Edo people for the past two years has finally ended as he would take all possible steps to make Edo people feel the impact of true democracy.

On the other hand, Oshiomole is from Labour party and his house members are mostly PDP and ACs, can he really cope with this parade?
