Regina Weinreich: Remembering Tennessee Williams

Playwright John Patrick Shanley referring to Tennessee Williams as a "gorgeous unstoppable beast," recounted an incident in a restaurant when he, a budding writer, maybe thirty feet away from the master dramatist, could not bring himself to say hello. Such is the power of "influence" that any person in theater would stand in awe of this writer of poetry, short stories and the extraordinary body of plays for which he is best known. Shanley was among two dozen speakers who paid tribute to Tennessee Williams at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine on Thursday evening, themselves a Who's Who of American theater: Vanessa Redgrave who had originated the role of "Lady" in "Orpheus Descending" read from "Not About Nightingales," Marian Seldes who created the role of Blackie in "Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore," Sylvia Miles performed her role, Mrs. Wire, from the 1978 London production of "Vieux Carre." Tandy Cronyn presented a postcard Tennessee had sent her late mother Jessica Tandy, the original Blanche DuBois, from Italy, reveling in how Blanche would love Rome. Her father Hume Cronyn had been instrumental in keeping the young starving playwright alive, optioning his 9 one-acts. Eli Wallach performed a scene from one with his daughter Kathryn. Eli and Ann Jackson who was in the audience met doing that play. Olympia Dukakis read from "Milk Train," and John Guare read "As I stood in my room tonight." David Kaplan, curator of the Provincetown Tennessee Williams Theater Festival, read from an essay Tennessee had presented at the cavernous Saint John the Divine in 1971, "We are Dissenters Now:" protesting the Vietnam War; overall, Williams proclaimed, "love for humanity will prevail." On Sunday, Tennessee Williams will be inducted into the Poet's Corner, among Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Mark Twain, Walt Whitman, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Edith Wharton, and other American literary giants, becoming the first poet/ playwright to be so honored

For not only is cocaethylene toxic in the liver, it is also blamed for heart attacks in the under-40s and a surge in social problems. But because so little is known about the drug, few experts can agree on the nature of the threat to users, and indeed society as a whole.

Jahvid Best Injury VIDEO: Injured Running Back Taken To Emergency Room

*** SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO ***

(AP) BERKELEY, Calif. -- California tailback Jahvid Best was carted off the field Saturday night and taken to the emergency room after he landed on the back of his head when he leapt more than 5 feet in the air and flipped over a defender to score a touchdown.

Cal spokesman Herb Benenson said that a preliminary evaluation showed Best sustained a concussion, but more tests were being done before a final diagnosis would be announced by the school. Best had movement in all of his extremities, Benenson said.

Best's helmet came off on impact. He vaulted into the air over Oregon State safety Cameron Collins. Paramedics removed Best's jersey and he appeared to be receiving oxygen when taken away. Benenson said he was taken to an emergency room for observation and examination.

Best missed practice Tuesday and Wednesday with a slight concussion sustained in the team's 23-21 win at Arizona State last Saturday, but participated in full during Thursday's workout. The concussion wasn't diagnosed right away.

The latest injury - with 6:07 before halftime - silenced Memorial Stadium, where fans chanted "Jahvid! Jahvid!" before everything went quiet. His teammates went down on their knees and waited, then moved to the end zone as trainers and doctors took him away on a stretcher. The game was delayed 13 minutes.

Best, one of the most dynamic running backs in the country and a preseason Heisman Trophy contender, has 16 touchdowns and 867 rushing yards this season for the 23rd-ranked Golden Bears, including 29 yards on nine carries Saturday with the 7-yard TD run. He also has 22 catches for 213 yards.

Cal quarterback Kevin Riley took a hard hit with 1:19 left in the first half and was helped to the sideline.

Rosie O'Donnell was a guest on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon Friday night. The comedian and former talk show host weighed in on Fox News "carnival barker" Glenn Beck and dropped a the f-bomb when she talked about her new show on Sirius XM radio.

Rosie On Glenn Beck:

O'DONNELL: Yeah, it's not ever going to be me and Glenn Beck.

[ Laughter ]

FALLON: It won't be.

O'DONNELL: No.

FALLON: Crying hysterically. No.

O'DONNELL: No. [ Crying sounds ] "Obama is ruining everything. I want drugs. Be afraid, America, we're in trouble."

[ light laughter ]

FALLON: You don't want to hear that everyday now.

O'DONNELL: I don't understand why people enjoy that carnival barker. I don't get it.

[ Laughter ] He's a scary man to me.

O'Donnell used a few choice words as she recounted an exchange with a new employee, saying "shit" twice. At the end her story, Fallon reminded O'Donnell about the swearing and she turned to the audience and said "fuck." None of the swear words made it on air. The were beeped out. It's also worth noting that Fallon's network show doesn't go on air until 12:35 a.m.

Oh, dear reader! No matter what the world thinks of me, I am really just a simple village girl from Ghana, West Africa. I was swept from my motherland at a young age and hustled into the dazzling lights of Boston (maybe not so dazzling) then New York (plenty dazzling). But inside - I am still the same. My needs are simple: food, shelter and a Rick Owens jacket. You see, I cannot consider myself a woman until I own one of Mr. Owens' sickeningly chic pieces. My obsession of the day is this amazing jacket which provides function and fashions (the "s" is intentional) with a warm flannel body and a dramatically raised shoulder. It only costs $2100 on Netaporter.com. Feel free to purchase this for me.

Goldman's reputation is suddenly as toxic as the credit default swaps and other inexplicably exotic financial instruments it used to buy with glee. That's bad for the one thing it values more than anything else: business. Being the prime target for popular and political outrage could put Goldman first in line for draconian new regulation. So it has, reluctantly, decided that the time has come to speak out, to fight its corner. That's how, on one of those bright autumnal New York mornings when anything seems possible -- even an invitation to break bread with the masters of the universe -- I find myself walking past the security guard who held up Michael Moore and into the building with no name.

*** SCROLL DOWN FOR PHOTOS ***

Sammy Sosa's skin appears to have lightened considerably. Photographs taken at an event in Las Vegas reveal a surprisingly light pigmentation on the former slugger. While no cause has been established at this time, the web site Midwest Sports Fans speculates that steroid use could be responsible:

There appears to be at least some evidence suggesting that steroid use could be one of the lifestyle choices that increases a person's likelihood of becoming symptomatic with vitiligo.

It was reported in June that Sosa, who captured the nation's attention as a prolific home run hitter in the 1990s and earlier this decade, tested positive for steroids in 2003.

SEOUL, South Korea mdash; A woman in South Korea who tried to pass the written exam for a driver's license with near-daily attempts since April 2005 has finally succeeded on her 950th time. The aspiring driver spent more than 5 million won ($4,200) in application fees, but until now had failed to score the minimum 60 out of a possible 100 points needed to get behind the wheel for a driving test.

Cha Sa-soon, 68, finally passed the written exam with a score of 60 on Wednesday, said Choi Young-chul, a police official at the drivers' license agency in Jeonju, 130 miles (210 kilometers) south of Seoul.

Police said Cha took the test hundreds of times, but had no specific total. Local media said she took the test 950 times.

Now she must pass a driving test before getting her license, Choi said.

Repeated calls to Cha seeking comment went unanswered. She told the Korea Times newspaper she needed the license for her vegetable-selling business.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. mdash; A Florida thief with a peculiar penchant for Rolex watches faces up to 25 years in prison.

Leonardo Perez has pleaded guilty to charges he stole eight gold Rolex Presidential edition watches, each worth $50,000, over four months in 2007. The crime spree began just after Perez finished a 17-year sentence for stealing Rolexes in South Florida.

The 36-year-old Miami native is so loyal he even has the Rolex logo tattooed on a forearm. Investigators say he's been able to glimpse and follow drivers wearing the watch from the other side of the road.

Perez was supposed to be sentenced Thursday in Orange County, but the hearing was delayed.

He primarily found victims out shopping, followed them home and robbed them at gunpoint.

Al Gore: "Civil Disobedience Has A Role To Play"

Perhaps the best way to understand the extraordinary transformation of Al Gore is to study the changing rhetoric of his enemies. A mere nine years ago, back when George Bush was just a cheeky rogue with an adorable line in malapropisms, presidential candidate Gore was famously derided as wooden and dull. Having failed to win the presidency - though of course that depends, as ever, on your definition of the word "win" - he next became a pitiable loser, then a laughable climate-change wonk, then the Oscar-winning, peace prize-winning, Live Earth-organising darling of liberal Hollywood. And so it says something hugely flattering about his present-day stature, surely, that the new official anti-Gore line is that he is quite simply evil: an anti-American hypocrite, a supporter of world government, and, like Barack Obama, probably a communist or a fascist or both. A recent documentary about Gore made by Irish global warming denialists, Not Evil Just Wrong, made the mistake of diverging from this stance, prompting fury among parts of its intended audience in the US. Not evil? Get real.
