50 Million Trees To Be Planted! But Is That Enough?

Here is some information on a CBC article

This is a great step towards slowing down the problems that we have been causing, but until there is an exact amount of replanted trees that are harvested there will always be environmental problems caused from over harvesting. A group that I recently done some work with called the Student Climate Change Coalition has done some recent planting on Prince Edward Island all with money that was raised at an event called Global Warning which shows that you don't have to just leave things up to the government if you see a problem.

"Ontario is pledging to plant 50 million trees as part of an $80-million plan to fight climate change.

Premier Dalton McGuinty is set to make the announcement later Monday in Oakville, CBC News has learned.

The promise is part of the United Nations Environment Programme's Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign, which aims to encourage the planting of one billion trees in 2007.

Government sources say Ontario's effort will be the largest of all jurisdictions in the UN campaign to fight climate change.

Ontario, however, won't plant all the trees this year, instead promising to plant them over the next 13 years.

So far, 1.8 million trees have been planted by the province this year. The rest will be planted on public and privately owned lands by 2020.

The project should offer some relief to Toronto, where city councillors trimmed spending on tree planting and maintenance as part of a widespread $34 million in budget cuts.

McGuinty will also announce the development of a new Grade 11 course to focus on environmental issues."

This has been long over due. After having the guys from the Museum Pieces come over to play a show a few months ago that kicked off their most recent tour, I would suggest that anyone who is into sounds that draws listeners into the realm of the true use of instruments to check this band out. With mostly being a two piece band Tyler Messick (guitar, vocals) Andy March (drums or piano) can really entertain.

If you are in the close area to any of there upcoming shows check them out. You will not be unimpressed.

Global Warning

Next Friday, The Guild will play host to a provincial leaders debate and benefit concert with the overall goal of raising awareness over climate change. The concert, organized by the Student Climate Change Coalition, aims to bring islanders, especially youth, together and take into consideration our environment.

“We’re putting on this joint event so that youth can get a sense of where the parties stand on the environment,” said group founder Justin Douglas. “We’re allowing students to submit questions so that their concerns are brought forward.”

The event, titled “Global Warning” begins at 6:30 on May 18th, and will feature Progressive Conservative leader Pat Binns, Island New Democrats leader Dean Constable, leader of the Greens Sharon Labchuk and Liberal environment critic Richard Brown. The debate will last 50 minutes, and will focus on the environment.

Following the debate, islanders are invited to attend a concert featuring some of the best maritime acts, including: The Museum Pieces, Smothered In Hugs, Annapilla, Boxer the Horse, Stride, Epaulettes, The Barnkats and Eli MacDougall.

Proceeds from the concert will go toward the legacy program, where trees are planted for every high school and university graduate for 2007 in the province.

The Student Climate Change Coalition is a non-partisan student group created to raise awareness for climate change and empower young people to make informed decisions. The event is also supported by the Creating Local Connections project which is an initiative of Taking IT Global.
