Mobile Internet Unit: Nigeria

IN its bid to promote rapid internet penetration among its populace, the Federal Government plans to build 12 Mobile Internet Units (MIU) across the six geopolitical zones as it initially takes off.

The Mobile Internet Units which will be a Mercedes Benz luxury bus converted to an internet laboratory with a Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) mounted on top with Personal Computers (PCs), had its first phase launched in Abuja.

Confirming the development to The Guardian, Prof. Gabriel Ajayi, Director-General, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) said the implementation bureau for the National Policy on Information Technology said the vehicle will be assembled locally.

The design of the internet laboratory will be done by the Science and Technology Ministry while the PCs will be solely Zinox computers, the first internationally certified made in Nigeria computer.

Explaining the project further, Ajayi said it was borne out of the determination by government to equip its citizenry with IT skills to enable them participate favourably in the information age.

The MIUs, according to the NITADA chief will employ well-skilled IT personnel, who will train people in different areas. The MIU will stay at least two weeks in each location in a particular geopolitical zone before moving to another.

Besides promoting computer literacy for those in rural areas, it will also provide internet access using the VSAT mounted on them.

He said the project would soon be launched, adding that the introduction of the MIU will be one of numerous gestures during the yuletide.

Already, he mentioned that plans are on to provide a VSAT facility each for broad based internet access in all states of the federation.

Ajayi, however, lamented that of the more than 650 million internet users in the world, Nigeria, despite its large population has less than one million internet users with most of them living in Lagos.

After the launch of the Mobile Internet Unit in Abuja, it was learnt that states will also be encouraged to take part in the project to increase the number.

Commenting on the choice of Zinox Computers as the PCs to be installed in the internet laboratory, Ajayi said it is an attempt to encourage local content and expertise for the development of the IT industry.
The Kanu Heart foundation - A Non-for-profit charity based Organisation founded by Kanu Nwankwo, a NIgerian Soccer international that plays his professional football at Arsenal FC (the English league champions) that raises funds for treatment for African children with heart problems to get traetment in western countries (England and USA) and also from Isreal is the news again.
They are in the planning process of what intends to be the most robust fund raising Charity event in Africa this March. Also involved with the Pepsi(nigeria), Coca-cola(NIgeria), Gulder, Peak Milk, Cowbell milk, Guiness (nigeria) and other African corporations and conglomorates. The Organisation has flown over 20 children abroad for treatment. And they have hundreds of African children that can afford adequate medical treatment for the heart problem on their waiting list, all of which they do not intend to cast away.
It is good Africa is beginning to tend to her own through personal initiatives and synergized implementations. By this we are sending a very Positive Message to the rest of the World - 'The African Child deserves all the care the society can offer' and that is exactly what he shall get

Nigeria, Go beyond Access!

To most, the term “Digital Divide” refers to the "lack of access majorities" and the access Priviledge populations have to computers or the Internet – a gap which puts them at a distinct disadvantage when meeting high education standards or vying for jobs in today’s Global knowledge-based economy. But in the real sense this issue in relation to Education spans beyond the above reference.
The issue of technology access by equipping schools, libraries and community Learning centers with hardware, software and Internet connections is very important and should be our initiation point. The critical question here is that what are most African youths actualy doing with this access? i'll answer - Comsunmtion.

Here in Nigeria many youth spend their computer time surfing the Web (not for research development orproject assistance but pleasure) , downloading music or chatting, which in themselves are alright. I believe that sparking a passion for creating with – not just consuming – technology is the key to helping underserved youth succeed in the digital age, thus we need to emphasize creativity and originality in planning computer projects for students. If we move beyond access and give all Youths the opportunity to communicate creatively with computers, we truly unleash the power of Home grown technology and that will begin to address the issue of digital inequity.
