Today I watched a presentation of a new climate change report, funded by the Swedish government. It shows that we´re now emitting almost nine billion tons of CO2 every year, 2,5 billion tons more then nine years ago.

This is much worst the the IPCC-report said in 2007. And they are now talking about that the climate system have flipped over to a new level. And when we´ve reached that point, then we have no idea of what´s going to happened.

This scares me, and I´m putting my hope the the meeting in Copenhagen in December. Maybe that´s our last opportunity.

It´s been called the worlds largest democracy. And today they have to proof themselves. During the elections in the last 20 years it´s been a close race between the Congress party, who lead the liberation from the British and the hindu nationalistic movement BJP. And for the last five years, the Congress party have ruled India with Manmohan Singh as prime minister.

But this year a third alliance have joined the race from the left. With a social welfare agenda they could be a good choice for a India with huge social injustice.

I will follow the election that will last until May 13, and then we can see who´s going to lead one of the great nations of the world.

I just got a message from One.org about some good news.

Over the last month, 51,000 ONE members signed our petition to Prime Minister Gordon Brown, letting him know that people around the world think it is important that the worldrsquo;s poorest countries have a say in reshaping the global financial system.

While we were working with 10 Downing Street to deliver our petition, the British Government extended an invitation to African Union leaders to send a representative to the G20 Summit. We know there is much more to do but this is an important first step.

Click here to add your name to our note saying, “Thank you for including African representation in the G20 Summit. Under your stewardship please continue to fight for the representation of the developing world.” We will deliver this alongside the original petition:

http://www.one.org/international/thankbrown/o.pl?id=836-3352959-kyPPGzxamp;t=2

This is really good news at a challenging time. While an invitation to a meeting doesnrsquo;t have the immediate impact of funding development programs or cancelling debt, it is a vital step. The whole world is suffering because of the economic crisis, but the worldrsquo;s poorest people are the hardest hit. As the new international finance rules and structures start to take shape, it is critical that their voices are heard.

Though the invitation has already been given, wersquo;ll still be delivering our petition. But rather than saying ‘pleasersquo; when we hand it over, wersquo;ll be saying thank you and now please listen to what the African delegation has to say.

Click here to add your name to our thank you note wersquo;ll hand over with the petition:

http://www.one.org/international/thankbrown/o.pl?id=836-3352959-kyPPGzxamp;t=4

Congratulations on helping to make this happen.

Thank you,

David Lane, ONE.org

20 years of knowledge

On June 23, 1988, a group of scientists, led by James Hansen testified in front of the United States senate. They told the politicians they where 99 percent confidence that the climate system of the world where changing, and that humans where contributing to this change. This where very strong in the media, but where forgotten a few years later when global politics around the fall of the Soviet Union took over the scene.

Then, in the early months of the 21st century, the IPCC launched their third report on the subject. The global media factory once again focused on the issue for some time until the global politics around 9/11 took over the scene.

And now, we have entered a third wave of focus on the issue of climate change. It´s been lasting for almost three years and do seem to be more lasting then the other two. So, unless we face some other eminent threat, maybe this will be the time when we actually got from knowledge to action. We need to do a lot before we see that. In our own lives, and on a national and global level.

What have 20 years of knowledge taught us? That we got from 99 to 100 percent sure that climate change is a problem?

Whatever we learned, one thing is sure. We don´t have 20 more to debate the issue.

Today, on the first hour of February 13th, it´s 298 days left until December 7th and COP15, the UN-meeting around Climate Change. Some have said it´s the most important meeting of our generation. Some have said it´s the most important meeting in this century. A lot of things are at stake, the well being of future generations, the importance of bio diversity, cultural balance and much more.

The changing climate are our common challenge, and it´s a true global one. Everyone will be affected, some earlier than others.

How do you want to spend the next 298 days? What will be your part in this. Future generations will judge us from the choices we make right now.

Today, Morgan Tsvangirai was sworn in as prime minster of the new coalition government in Zimbabwe. This breaks the 28 years of Robert Mugade as their only leader. Mugabe are still remaining as president of the badly mislead country but this might be the change we have waited for.

During the last year since the elections, there´s been problems. Tsvangirai´s party MDC won, but Mugabe did´t accept the result and where brutally oppressing any actions for change. This affected the aid donors and also the little capacity the Zimbabwean government had to rule. And the last months, cholera have killed over 3 400 people, and have affected many more. The unemployment rate are 90 percent.

This can be the light in the end of the tunnel, but is it the way out of it, or a train approaching?

After a hard night, all the reports from the Israeli election. Right now, with 98 percent of the votes counted, it seems that ruling party Kadima are going to win. They would get 28 mandates and expected winner Likud 27. Both parties are claiming the victory. The extreme right, Israel Beiteinu, would in the exit polls get 15 mandates, and Labor only 13.

This would, if it´s accurate mean that foreign minister Tzipi Livni wins the first chance to form a coalition, but it seams that she´s not going to hold it together so Likud could instead have the possibility for form a coalition government.

I will give you a report when it´s done, all the votes should be counted in the next hour.
