Once one afternoon
as a child I gathered
from my father who used
to sit beneath a tree
a story. He said:
'Years before there lived
a king with horns who decided
from then on the blemish
would not be known.
A coward follows his ways;
so constantly he checked them
and wrapped a turban to hide them
but a servant found the secret out
and with this knowledge
outrage welled inside him.
They said he was mistaken
and if he didn't stay quiet,
he heard he would be killed.
Anxiety rose but he was barred
from passing on what he knew.
He understood his predicament:
food stuck in his throat
the knotted news kept him awake
he wandered from place to place
knowing to hide it from all
the people with hungry stomachs
and all this set his bed alight.

Then in the middle of the night
when sleep was missing he leapt
from his home and village
and headed for the dark, the forest,
the pools of the wild animals;
in the gloom the eagle and gazelle
fled away and he took up
the shield of remembrance
and compassion for the poor.

Aimlessly he wandered, then, when
the dawn glowed, he dug,
like a beast burrowing a den,
deep beneath a tree
and placed his chin and beard
upon the soil and whispered with
the hole alone passing on his knowledge
'that the king, Goojaa,
has the horns of a kudu'.

Now, don't interrupt me;
what you've gathered here
is a story once passed to me:
when the news of those horns
flew from his shoulders
everything became light
and from that place of burial
he dusted himself off and left
to travel on his way.

And later in that place
they said that when rain fell
horns grew out of the ground.

Dresses
Men.
Men wear western pants or a flowing plaid ma'awis (kilt} western shirts, and shawls.
On their heads they may wrap a colorful turban or wear a koofiyad (embroidered cap).

Women
Women usually wear one of the following dress:
Direh, a long, billowing dress worn over petticoats.
Coantino, a four-yard cloth tied over shoulder and draped around the waist.
Toob, commonly worn throughout Africa
Hijab, and head scarfs are very common

Customs and Courtesies
Greetings
Somali warmly greet each other with handshakes, but shaking hands with the opposite sex is avoided.
Common verbal greetings include:
Assalam Alaikum (Peace be upon you)
Nabad miyaa (is their peace).
Subah wanaagsan (Good morning)
Galab wanaagsan (Good afternoon)
Habeeb wanaagsan (Good night)

Gestures
Somali use sweeping hand and arm gestures to dramatize speech. Many ideas are expressed through specific hand gestures:
A swift twist of the open hand means "nothing" or "no".
Snapping fingers may mean "long ago" or and "so on"
A thumb under the chin indicates "fullness".
It is impolite to point the sole of one's foot or shoe at another person.
It is impolite to use the index finger to call somebody; that gesture is used for calling dogs.
The American "thumbs up" is considered obscene.

DATING AND MARRIAGE
Dating in the Western sense does not exist in Somalia. Young urban people often meet at universities or at work and persuade their parents to help them establish a courtship. Rural marriages are usually arranged.
One-to-one dating is reserved for after the engagement party or after the marriage contract has been signed.
The groom must give a bridal token to the bride's family. Traditional wedding festivities are spread over three nights of dancing and singing, and men and women celebrate separately on some of the nights.

1805: Morocco start the first period the brighter. Meanwhile, Algeria make another substitution as Brahim Zafour comes on for Mamar Mamouni.

1759: Morocco get the first period of extra-time underway. Jamal Aliou has replaced Kharja for the Atlas Lions.

1753: The referee blows to end the 90 minutes, and the last of the quarter-finals is the only one that will need extra-time. 30 minutes of extra-time will be played, and there is no golden goal.

1751: GOAL Morocco 1-1 Algeria
Chammakh keeps his cool as a cross into the Algerian box finds him unmarked at the back post and he slips the ball past Gaouaoui with the outside of his right foot from seven yards. Good work from Yaacoubi set up the goal.
How do you know if your significant other is well on the way to falling in love with you? What are the clues that he's completely smitten? the top ten signs that he's wrapped around your little finger!

1. HE'S HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE

2. BYE BYE FOOTY
It's Saturday and he wants to go shopping with you instead of meeting the lads for football.

3. FAMILY TIES
He tells his mother about you.

4. BYE BYE MATES
He cancels nights out with the boys to be with you. And you didn't even have to ask.

5. MR FIX-IT
He volunteers to do odd jobs around the house for you.

6. CROWDS DON'T MATTER
He holds your hand in public and showers you with kisses between courses in restaurants.

7. SIMILAR PURSUITS
He wants to teach you the offside rule so that you can watch football together.

8. HEART'S DESIRE
He's really looking forward to Valentine's Day.

9. THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT
He's happy to sit through chick-flick after chick-flick with you at the cinema.

Peace

What is peace and how do we get there?
Peace is not the absence of war. War is the absence of peace.

Peace is something that arises in the heart and soul of individual human beings. From there, it extends out to family, community, nation and world.

Peace cannot be arrived at through the use of war or violence. Only more violence can and will result.

Peace is arrived at by allowing grace and love to fill heart, mind and spirit. What will result then are understanding, compassion, empathy and forgiveness.

The ideal is not created (made real) by focussing on its’ opposite. The ideal becomes realized through constant, fervent commitment to the ideal.

If peace is your ideal, focus on peace, on nothing else.

Take a single candle into a dark room and it is lit. Take all the darkness you can imagine into a lit room and there is no result. The room is still lit.

Light the candle of peace and love in your heart and no darkness can extinguish that light.

Peace is as the stillness of a moonlit pond. Peace is as the flight of a butterfly. Peace is a cloud colored golden by the rising sun. Peace is as a rainbow after a summer's shower.

Peace begins with you, with me, with each individual. Therefore, look to yourself and apply understanding, compassion, empathy and forgiveness to your fractured self. Become whole by allowing love and peace to fill your being. Become whole by allowing your intimate and infinite connection to the universal to become your identity.

The events of the world reflect who we are. We cannot separate our selves from them. Global peace will occur when each of us is fervently focussed on our individual peace.

If you must have an enemy against whom you must struggle in order to define your self, then let it be fear. Fear separates you from unity, from love and from peace.

Every creature is divine. Every aspect of creation is divine. If we are in conflict with any part of creation, we are in conflict with our own true self and we deny our divinity.

When peace fills your heart, overwhelms your mind and elevates your spirit, all creation sings your song. It becomes one uni-verse, whole and complete, beautiful and ecstatic.

Meditate on peace. Always.

WHAT IS SUCCESS?

What is success, Dear Lord,
It's talked about so much,
And those who try to find it.
Find it very hard to touch.

To some it is position,
To others it's progress.
Or maybe it's prestige,
Or the things that we possess.

But what is your opinion?
What really is success?
Is it just the things of this world,
Or does it have a sacredness.

And then I am reminded,
That life is but a day,
And what we do in this world,
Well someday get the pay.

Oh, I could be a great success,
In everybody's eyes,
But if I make my bed in hell,
It is failure in disguise.

So Lord, I want to follow You.
In every way You lead.
And though I fail in others eyes.
I know in Yours I will succeed.

And when my life on earth is done.
And I behold Your face,
I'll be so glad I followed You.
And leaned upon Your grace.
Yemeni qat is the most often discussed, and reportedly of greater quality than that from other places, in part, due to the high terraces on which it grows in Yemen. Other reports suggest Kenyan and Ethiopian qat is equally good due to the "loose volcanic soil" found in those countries.(2) When chewed, qat leaves produce feelings of euphoria and stimulation.

In the age we live in today, it seems that family members spend far less time together than at any other time in history. It is all too common for children to be raised in families where both parents work full-time. Children spend about nine hours each day at school and getting ready for school. And after returning to the home they still may have homework to do. Put that with other activities that they may be involved in such as sports, music etc., they have little free time considering they will still need about eight hours of sleep.

Parents too, are very busy. Often early to work and late to come home. When home, they may be exhausted from a heavy workload, or feel stress from a continuous line of deadlines to meet.

In this familiar scenario husband, wife, father, mother and children seldom spend much time together, and much less quality family time.

This is certainly not how God has designed the family to work. In fact, He has charged parents to spend time with their children, teaching them His ways. Parents today have come to believe they are good parents as long as they provide financially for their children. But God has entrusted His children to parents to diligently and lovingly raise in His way, developing His value system in them. It's more about character than finances.

What is Life presents conceptual thinking in biology. While many current issues in biology are based on simple ideas, the elucidation of biological mechanisms that explain diverse aspects of life is challenging because cells and organisms are complex systems. To understand how biologists study the structure and function of living organisms one has to understand the relationship between experiment and theory. Such an understanding amounts to scientific literacy.

Manage Your Self

Do the following:
Lead a discussion with your family to identify one family financial goal that must be saved for out of family income.
Choose a goal that has strong personal interest for both you and your family (a family trip or vacation, a new VCR, or a family car, for instance).
Discuss the goal in detail (where to go on vacation, for example, or what kind of car to buy), the cost of the goal, and when you want to reach the goal.
Discuss how your family could accumulate funds to reach this goal, how the goal will affect the rest of the family budget, and how you could help your family achieve the goal.
Do the following:
Prepare a personal budget or spending plan for three months, including a "pay yourself first" savings plan.
Keep track of everything you buy. Balance all income with expenses and savings at the end of each month.
Share your three month budget with your merit badge counselor. Explain how you determined discretionary income (income not spent to meet fixed expenses), how much you saved, and what you spent money on. Did you spend more or less than you budgeted?
Do ONE of the following:
Identify a personal financial goal and make a plan to achieve that goal.
Write down the goal you want to achieve. (This may be a small, short term goal such as buying clothes, or it may be a major, long-term goal such as saving for college.)
Develop a financial plan to accomplish the goal.
Determine how much the goal will cost, how much time you have to reach the goal, how you will earn money to pay for the goal, and what adjustments you could make if you cannot reach the goal in the desired time with the income you can earn.
Discuss your plan with your counselor.
OR:

Determine a spending/savings plan for living on your own.
Choose a realistic job based on your age, skills, education, and experience (working at a fast-food restaurant, movie theater, or college library, for example).
Determine how much you would probably make per hour and how many hours you would work each week. Determine your spendable income (after taxes and other deductions are taken out) for a month.
Make a list of all basic monthly living expenses: rent, food, transportation, clothing, telephone, etc. Ask family or friends, or call sources to help you determine costs.
Compare projected income with projected expenses. Would you have enough income to live on? Would any be left over for fun? For savings?
If expenses exceed income, determine what options you would have for bringing the two into balance. Could you reduce or eliminate expenses? Work more hours a week? Get a higher-paying job?
Discuss you final plan with your counselor.
Do the following:
Choose an item you would like to buy. Be specific. (For example, identify the brand name of a pair of shoes you want, or the title of a CD.)
Comparison shop for the item.
Find out where you can buy the item for the best price. Call around; study ads. Look for a sale or a discount coupon.
Consider alternatives. Could you buy the item used? Should you wait for a sale? (d) Discuss your shopping strategy with your counselor.
Do ONE of the following:
Visit a bank. Ask a bank representative to explain checking accounts, savings accounts, loans, and automated teller machines (ATMs).
Explain to your counselor the difference between a checking account and a savings account.
Discuss with your counselor the minimum requirements to open and maintain the accounts or to take out a loan.
OR:

Visit another type of financial institution, such as a stock brokerage firm or an insurance company.
Ask a representative what the firm does and how it works with consumers.
Explain to your counselor the differences in services offered by the following types of financial professionals: financial planner, stockbroker, insurance agent, accountant, tax preparer, banker, estate planning attorney.
Do the following:
Explain the difference between saving for a goal and investing for a goal.
Explain the two basic methods of investing: loaned and owned.
Explain the concepts of simple and compound interest and how compound interest can be used to increase your savings and investments more rapidly.
Explain the concepts of yield, profit, and total return, and how they are used to evaluate investment performance.
Explain the basic features of the following types of investments, including risks and rewards and whether they involve lending or owning: bank savings accounts, certificates of deposit, U.S. Savings Bonds, shares of stock, shares in a mutual fund, real estate.
Do the following:
Explain what a loan is, what interest is, and how the "annual percentage rate" measures the true cost of a loan.
Choose something you want to buy or do, but currently cannot afford. Set up an imaginary loan so you can "achieve" that goal.
Identify the "principal" amount, interest rate, and repayment schedule. Determine the total cost of the loan (principal plus interest).
Determine how it would affect your total cost if you paid back the same amount every two weeks, instead of once a month.
Explain the differences between a charge card, a debit card, and a credit card.
Identify the factors that affect the costs of credit. Tell which factors can be controlled.
Explain credit reports and how personal responsibility can affect your credit record.
Describe ways to reduce or eliminate debt.
Do the following:
Explain the five ways to manage risk.
Explain the six basic types of insurance and why someday you might need one or more of them.
Define the two major types of life insurance (term and permanent) and compare their advantages and disadvantages.
Do the following:
Identify a job or career that interests you and do basic research about it at your library or through other information sources.
Make a presentation to your troop or counselor about the job or career. Your report should include:
An explanation of your interest in the job or career (how you learned of it, what about it that interests you, what its job prospects are, and how you think the job or career will change in the future)
Any qualifications required (education, skills, experiences) and how you might become qualified for the job
The job's functions and responsibilities (the duties of the job or career)
The organizations, trade associations, professional associations, governmental regulations, or licenses involved in the career field
Do ONE of the following:
Prepare a personal resume for the job.
OR:

Interview someone in the job or career field and prepare a summary of the interview.
Discuss with your counselor your personal goals and ambitions in life. Relate these to your intellectual, physical, spiritual, and moral development.
How has Scouting helped you in accomplishing your goals and ambitions? Share your thoughts with your family.

The Root Cause of all our Problems

Our earth today is in a truly deplorable state. There is hardly a need to enumerate the problems: we all know what they are - or at least think we do. Environmental pollution, the extinction of species, some of which serve to feed millions (e.g. fish); global warming, with all the natural disasters this is causing; the depletion of the ozone layer; the poisoning of food and drinking water through chemicals; ruthless wars over boundaries and withheld independence - the list goes on and on...

Many of us will also point to the obvious causes: the neglect of humanity to do the right thing due to the greed and craving for power on the side of those in positions of power - in particular the representatives of international Capital and of the governments that serve it. And some feel confident the problem may be solved by fighting against these forces.

I doubt it. Some important battles and skirmishes may be won that way. But in the context of the whole, we'll be only attacking the symptoms.

The root cause lies deeper than the craving for power or wealth, deeper than megalomania or a vision blinded by self-interest. What's more: the root cause in all these instances is the same. It is the human habit of cutting ourselves off from Love.

In the individual case this has two main consequences, both equally destructive. Firstly, it causes blindness to the requirement of sharing, the need for unity and joint action which alone can ensure humanity's survival. And secondly, it leaves us with a deeply felt need for something to take the place of the love we cannot feel - neither around us, from others, nor within ourselves. A craving for a substitute that at least seems to satisfy. Which may indeed be political, financial or economic power - or else, something much more ordinary, possibly an addiction - to drugs, alcohol, gambling, sex, sweets or whatever. To something which in any case the individual concerned will then use all their energy to defend and keep available or intact for themselves - with all likely means at their disposal, no matter what.

Whether this person is a power-hungry politician, a ruthless corporate tycoon, a bureaucrat eager to gain promotion - or else an office worker, labourer or housewife adhering to the ruling ideology; perhaps, too, a dropout with a drug problem: in its most basic respect, their mentality in every case is the same - and in every single case (though they may never be aware of it) a source of suffering to themselves

In this they are no different, certainly no worse, than most of us. To some extent or other, we are all cut off from love - and to the same degree from Life.

It is this which is the true tragedy of humanity today - as it has been in the past, but in this age of globalization with more far-reaching consequences than ever. It is the issue we therefore need to resolve most urgently. And solve it we can only on the individual, personal level.

Why this so, and what each of us can do about it,

What is Development Education?

The terms 'global community' and 'world citizens' are increasingly part of our vocabularly in a world that, in figurative terms, is becoming a smaller place. Along with the positive attributes of this reality is the concerning dimension that growing inequalities exist. No nation is an island, many interdependencies exist, and therefore as world citizens we are challenged to consider ways in which we can positively influence the global society in which we live.

It is now understood that much of what we do locally affects our world globally and we are called upon to think 'globally before we act locally'. Such thinking has been emphasised by environmentalists in recent decades and this forms a blueprint for action that relates to many aspects of our lives. Many of our actions affect life conditions of individuals at local, national and international levels, be it the state of their health, economy, environment or political security.
Development Education is not a specialist subject or a particular body of knowldge. Instead, it aims to reinforce a global perspective and embraces a holistic approach to world issues. Development education is seen as a process that fosters the knowledge, skills and attitudes which promote justice and equality in a multicultural society and an interdependent world. It raises awareness of global concerns and illustrates the potential for change by considering the economic, social, political and environmental consequences of our actions. The United Nations describes development education as enabling
'people to participate in the development of their community, their nation and the world as a whole. Such participation implies a critical awareness of local, national and international situations, based on an understanding of the social, economic and political processes'.

Security firm warns of Chernobyl resurrection

A new strain of the devastating Chernobyl virus has been detected, although it has not been seen 'in the wild' yet
Panda Software, a European antivirus company, has detected a new strain of the devastating W95/CIH10XX virus -- commonly known as the Chernobyl virus -- which can be so damaging to some computers that it will render some BIOS chips and even entire motherboards, unusable.

Panda somehow obtained a copy of the new strain, although it is not been seen "in the wild" or known to be starting to spread.

The variant activates its payload on the 2nd of every month. The original strain, first detected in 1998, activates its payload on the 26th of April, the date of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

Another antivirus company, while acknowledging the dangers posed by infection, urged calm. Network Associates Asia-Pacific marketing director Allan Bell says, "...unless the virus is being seen in the wild there is a danger of crying wolf."

Bell says that although this new virus is very dangerous "...the risk factor for a virus must take into account its prevalence. This new variant of the Chernobyl virus does not appear to be in the wild and so the average user is not likely to encounter it".

"Encountering" the Chernobyl virus is not a pleasant experience. Network Associates wrote an analysis of the original Chernobyl viruses in which they describe the effect of the Chernobyl virus on the average system:

"The viruses contain a very dangerous payload, whose trigger date depends on the variant. On this date, they attempt to overwrite the flash-BIOS. If the flash-BIOS is write-enabled (and this is the case in most modern computers with a flash-BIOS) this renders the machine unusable because it will no longer boot. At the same time, they also overwrite the hard disk with garbage," Network Associates said.

The virus affects Windows 95/98/ME systems.
