Its that time of the year again;when we leave a spent year behind and embrace a brand new year. 2008 is over, with all its ups and downs. We are grateful for the inspiring events that happened, and all the valuable lessons we learnt. Now its time to embrace the new year with hope and gladness. May the new year bring forth good tidings, may we all be inspired and motivated to take positive action; and above all may we find many opportunities to make a difference in big ways and even in our own small ways. Be inspired, be informed, be involved. Happy new year!

sustainable living: personal weapons against poverty

When we think about fighting poverty, we usually think of how we can help those who are extremely poor to lead more dignified lives, by enabling them to access basic needs such as adequate food, clothing, decent shelter, water and sanitation and health services, access to a reasonable income and education.

While it is important to empower the poor so that they lead quality lives, we need to think of how we as a society are participating in actions that perpetuate rather than eliminate poverty. This has to do with the way we use the resources available to us i.e. If we do not use them sustainably then we are promoting the very poverty that we are trying to eliminate, by depleting the few resources that are available. This can only spell disaster for future generations since they will have to struggle if we do not live anything for them.

Global warming and climate change have led to issues such as desertification of farm lands, drying of water sources and changing climate patterns. This means that food production becomes difficult; due to diminishing arable land and long spells of drought; more people face water shortages and thus poverty is increased.

Therefore,we can say that environmental conservation and sustainable use of resources is very important if we are to win this war on poverty. We need to think and act sustainably even as we make and implement development plans to lift our people out of dehumanizing conditions.Lobbying and petitioning the policy-makers is very important, but we also need to look at the other side of the poverty equation:What role can we as individuals play in eliminating poverty?

As individuals we can play a significant role in fighting poverty by using resources more sensibly. If we all take time to learn everyday tips on how we can use the resources available to us more efficiently, then we will be making progress towards eradicating poverty.

Some of these actions of sustainable living include:recycling waste, reducing wastage of resources, not leaving the taps running and switching of lights when not in use.It is not only the work of the government to alleviate poverty, but you can also help in a big way by living sustainably.

You may have all that you need today and may not think much about that tap you left dripping, but if you do not act now to use resources more carefully, then your offspring will be affected since they may not have adequate water to live on.

Let us all take care of the environment and use our resources well.It is your life, and the future is at stake!

Caning Is not the Antidote to Student Indiscipline

For the last few weeks, we have watched in disbelief as students razed down school buildings which took many years to be put up, all in the name of airing their grievances.Granted that some of their grievances are legitimate, arson, violence and chaos will not solve anything. However, it seems that the students were only imitating what they had observed earlier in the year ,when citizens resulted to violence as the way to express their dissatisfaction with the flawed elections. That being said, the students' actions are still inexcusable.

Many people are calling for the re-introduction of corporal punishment to address the rising cases of student indiscipline. However, I feel that caning will not solve discipline problems in our schools.Caning in itself is a form of violence (inflicting physical pain ) and it does not serve as a good model, because the students learn that it is ok to use violence on those who have done wrong.

Caning does not eliminate the undesired behaviour, but rather suppresses i,t hence the student does not reform.Students may also adopt antisocial behaviors such as lying, so as to avoid being caned.

In the past, when caning was still in use as a behaviour change strategy, teachers were known to abuse corporal punishment, and to even cause physical harm to students.

Students are also human beings and must be treated with respect and dignity.

There should also be dialogue in schools; students should be given a chance to talk about their grievances without being victimized.Let the students be heard and be involved in making their learning experience better, so that they do not result to violence as the sure way to be seen and heard.

There are so many reasons why students should not be caned, especially because there are many other strategies that can be used to modify students' behaviour positively, and all teachers should be trained on how to use such strategies effectively.

If the cane must be used,as sometimes is the case, then there should be clear guidelines on when it should be used.I would suggest that it only be used if it is the most effective method for modifying the behaviour in question i.e. there is no other better method of modifying the behaviour.

So even as we contemplate student indiscipline, let us not get so emotional about it, but let us come up with reasonable guidelines on how to discipline our children without having to result to violence.

The truth about PMS

There are many myths surrounding the Premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and it has been the butt of many jokes for a long time.In some instances it has even been labeled as an excuse for women to behave badly. It is my intention to try and demystify PMS so that we can all understand it better hence be more informed regarding the positions we take.If you want to acquaint yourself with some facts, you'll find them outlined below:

PMS is real and medical professionals can attest to this.

PMS comprises of the physical and emotional disturbances that occur in the second half of the menstrual cycle after ovulation and ends with the onset of periods.

Not every woman experiences PMS, only about 80% of women, and even for those who experience it,the symptoms vary from month to month and the intensity of the symptoms may vary from month to month.

PMS may be so severe as to interfere with work, school and relationships.

The cause of PMS is not known but it is attributed to changes in hormone levels at ovulation which affect brain chemicals that bring about mood changes.

Stress as well as too much caffeine, refined sugar, obesity, dairy products and insufficient vitamins and minerals make symptoms worse.

You know that you have PMS if your symptoms follow a monthly pattern i.e. symptoms occur consistently around or after ovulation (mid-cycle) and they last until the menstrual flow begins.

Symptoms may include some of the following: bloating, weight gain, swelling of hands and feet due to fluid retention, swelling and tenderness of breasts, spotty skin, aches and pains, fatigue, food cravings e.g. chocolate, exaggerated mood swings(anxiety, anger, irritability, depression, oversensitivity)poor concentration, lethargy, sleepiness, insomnia and feeling overwhelmed.

Treatment includes: menopause, avoiding caffeine, alcohol and smoking;cutting down on red meat and salt; managing stress, eating small regular meals, fruits and vegetables, treating yourself well, getting sufficient sleep and exercise( for a feeling of well-being) and above all getting the support and understanding of your family and friends.
.
Premenstual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a severe form of PMS that is characterised by depression and hopelessness.

For those of you who do not have to go through PMS every month, thank God for it and remember to be supprotive and understanding towards women who go through PMS.

Of course women should take charge of themselves and not use PMS as an excuse for treating other people badly.

PMS is real, I attest to that too.

Have you tried it?

I did not know I could play the violin until I tried. One day someone asked me, ''Can you play the violin?''
I wanted to say no,I can't play the violin but I replied," I do not know if I can play the violin, because I've never tried"

And my answer disturbed me so much that I went to my mama and asked her, "Mama, do you think I can play the violin? And she answered,"Where do you get all those crazy questions from?Of course you can't play the violin and you know know that; besides, there are better things to do than sitting around playing a violin, like studying hard so your kids can play the violin.Run along now!

And still I wasn't satisfied so I asked a friend of mine, "Can I play the violin?".She burst out laughing and I thought I had said something wrong. You, play the violin?ha! Girls like you don't play violins, lets go play a proper game."

So I asked my teacher and she said, she didn't think I had any musical ability.

I dared to ask a stranger and he sized me up from head to toe, grunted in disapproval and walked away.

I still didn't know if I could play the violin so I decided to ask the one person I hadn't ask, the very person who could give me a proper answer : me. So I asked myself out loud, right there on the street, Can I play the violin? and the answer was, I'll never know unless I try.And I did try, and now I can play the violin.

I may not be the best violinist in the world, but I play my personal best; and I'm proud of it because at the end of the day, I can play the violin.

Do not say you can't do something until you try, you never know, you might discover one of your hidden capabilities; so go ahead and try something which you think you can't do, and you will be surprised that you actually can.

Who can understand men?

Some time back we were having a girl talk with some friends of mine...and shortly we delved into the topic of men and how we do not understand them. And in trying to demystify men, my friends came up with some titbits that were supposed to explain the whole mystery of "male-hood".

So it went something like this:

The nice men don't look good.

The handsome men are not nice.

The handsome and nice men might be gay (no chance for a girl there)

The handsome, nice and heterosexual men are taken.

The men who are not so handsome but are nice have no money.

The men who are not so handsome, but are nice, with money think we are only after their money.

The handsome men without money are after our money.

The handsome men who are not so nice, and are somewhat heterosexual, don't think we are beautiful enough.

The men who think we are beautiful, that are heterosexual, somewhat nice and have money are cowards.

The men who are somewhat handsome, somewhat nice and have some money and are heterosexual are shy and never make the first move!!

And the men who never make the first move, automatically lose interest when we take the initiative.

Now what is a girl to do?Who can understand men!!!...anyone?

And hope for the future
Tell me child when I lost it all
For I was once a child , a child of promise

I'm all grown up now child
I have seen the world
I have become a different one
from when I first began
But you O child of promise
You're still so pure, so untainted
You are still a child, a child of promise

I pray O child that you may guard
That purity, that zest, that hope
That I hold so dear to heart
That I wish I still had
For it is our hope,
the promise of a brighter future for us all
O child of promise,be true to yourself
And be a light upon a dark world.

How much truth do rumors contain?

Last week I overheard some colleagues talking about a rumor they had heard about another person.Their conversation was very animated and at the end of it all, one of them concluded that the rumor was likely to be true since 99% of rumors are true.True?

To say that I was shocked by that conclusion is to put it very lightly. I wonder how my colleague arrived at such a conclusion. What were her grounds of saying that 99% of rumours are true?

I have heard my fair share of rumors and quite often they mostly contain false information. And sometimes such rumors cause a lot of pain and misunderstanding. Beware of what you hear on the grapevine about others, for you do not know what falsehoods are being said about you too.

Make sure that you only share accurate news and information with others.

And lastly, though the information in this blog is based on something I overheard, that does not make me a rumormonger or does it?

I just want you to join me in celebrating the recent progress that has been made in Kenya politically, wherever you are. Words cannot describe the joy that is in my heart.

And even as we await the members of parliament to do their part , let us also get ready and start doing our bit. We need a lot of healing for all the wounds we have suffered. Let us be willing to seek help and to give assistance to one another, even as we work towards taking this country to greater heights.

Let us now work on those evils which we have always swept under the carpet. Let us deal with all our skeletons from the past that may hinder us from forging forward and let us face them boldly. Let us begin to think of how we can achieve justice and fairness for all our people, how we can correct the wrongs of the past.

Let us learn to forgive those who have wronged us and to bear no grudge against our fellow citizens. So that we may move on, without any unnecessary baggage, into a bright future.

Let us learn to love our neighbours once more; not to frown at their colour; not to wonder about their different accents, not to scoff at their customs, not to be afraid of their difference. It is a beautiful mosaic, this our country, very rich in diversity and culture, a wealth of diversity and unlimited opportunity for learning.

Let there be no prejudice nor discrimination, no hatred, but love instead.

Let me love you as you are, and you love me as I am
Let us rejoice in our diversity.

Let us embrace our neighbours, for they are all our people .Our beloved brothers and sisters.

Truth, justice and reconciliation?

Lately there have been calls for a truth and reconciliation commission to look into all the skeletons of our past that continue to afflict this country to this day.

This is a great idea, because I believe that this time round we as Kenyans should deal with our past fairly and squarely, so that we can live in the present and move on into the future without the burden of past evils that perpetually plague this country. It would be nice to live in a Kenya where there are neither skeletons in the closet nor dirt under the carpet.

However based on past experiences, i.e. all those other commissions which have been formed in the past, I remain skeptical about the call for a truth and reconciliation commission. We all know that past commissions of inquiry have seldom borne fruit. I could name so many examples and yet nothing ever happened to the culprits; they were not charged in court and even when they were the cases dissolved mysteriously without any evident resolution. Some of the culprits involved even became celebrities of sorts by virtue of their mischief. This has created a culture of impunity in some Kenyans who believe that no matter what they do, they will not be accountable for their actions.

If we are to have a truth and reconciliation commission, then let it be an effective one, whereby at the end of the day, we shall see all the culprits of all past and present injustices being held accountable for their actions. This would halt the culture of impunity and achieve justice for all Kenyans.

The truth and reconciliation commission is a great idea, but if it is implemented it should be done in a just way.

I am told that love is about 3 days from now. I do not believe that love should be expressed explicitly on only one day annually....but businesses have to make huge sales on the said day of love so....

Since quite a number of people remember to love in February (;thanks to the media and all others who subscribe to this) make a mental note to love somebody genuinely this lovely month. And I am not talking about your girlfriend or boyfriend (you already love them but remember to affirm your love to them or else....)...look outside and find someone who would really do with some love....someone in need of a hug or a pat on the back....small acts of love,.. think something up..someone who needs something you can give them...share something with someone who needs it.Spread some love in this lovely month.

Some may be involved in frantic efforts right now to hook up with someone before D-day (who wants to be lonely when everyone else is paired-up)....its all good but do not feel pressured to get yourself a man or a lady to go out with....look around you, there are so many people in need of your love this lovely month, share your love with them...and love will fill your life in return.

Do only things that are lovely this month...think lovely thoughts.day by day...then try to extend it to the end of the year.

Fill the world with some love this lovely month!

I have been talking to my fellow youth as we try to understand the situation in our country, and their sentiments have mostly been discouraging.

The youth have lost their faith in the electoral process; many have vowed to destroy their voter's cards and to never vote again. This is very discouraging.

I remember that just before elections, there was intensive civic education on voting and other electoral processes. The youth were especially urged to participate actively in the electoral process i.e. to register for a voter's card and to use it to choose their preferred leaders. The awareness campaigns worked because the youth registered to vote and voted in large numbers on the material day. Moreover, it is not only the youth who voted but also older citizens who do not usually vote.It was the first time for majority of the voters to take part in the voters exercise and they voted in record numbers. But the events that followed thereafter led most people to lose faith in the voting exercise leading them to proclaim that they will never vote again.

It is true that people sacrificed alot to vote: time and business. But Kenyans, do not lose faith in voting because it is your right to choose your leaders.I know things may have gone wrong this time. But do not give up your right; instead fight for the implementation of measures that will ensure that every time you vote, the process can never be hijacked, and only the rightful winner in any election can be declared to have won an election.Fight for measures to be implemented so that irregularities will not occur in future, but do not give up on voting.

Do not let circumstances overpower you but rather rise above them and show them who is in charge. You are in charge. You are the one who votes. It is your right .

Do not let anyone take your right from you.

Stand up and Fight for your right TO VOTE.( do not fight with bows and arrows but rather fight the good and clean fight)

This time round we should fight with all our might for all loopholes that allow for irregularities in our electoral process to be sealed.

This is our country, let us live for it.

Distress call

The situation in Kenya is at distressing levels, how many people will have to die and be displaced before the government does something?

I am distressed that it has taken a whole month for the leader elected by the people of one of the hotspots of violence to visit the area and speak out against the violence.Does this mean that all along he has not been aware that his constituents are burning. There are many others who have not taken a stand; many others who have not tried to help out in the plight of their constituents. What are our leaders for if they do not stand with us at our time of need?

I am distressed that the government seems to be taking the violence going on very lightly. The victims have said time and again that the police watch as their property is destroyed. It is the duty of the police to protect life and property and to maintain law and order. If we cannot depend on the police to protect us, then who will protect our lives in this country.

I am distressed : people have said that this chaos was planned long before the general elections and the election tallying was a mere excuse to commit already planned crimes. That leaves one wondering; is there intelligence in this country and if there is..Did they know about the planned violence? Why is it that the violence is getting out of hand? Shouldn't the instigators of this violence be behind bars by now?

We do not want to be evacuated from our homes by the police..we do not want to be refugees in our own country. The police must give us security. We have a government and the government should now take action to stop this once and for all, before things get out of hand and become unmanageable. If the government will not do all in its power to maintain law and order and to prevent this country from a state of anarchy, then do we have a government?

Let the government act now to stop this country from degenerating.

Let our leaders stand up and be seen to be working to restore this country to sanity. We elected you and you should use your skills and positions for the benefit of this country.

Let all reasonable citizens stand up to reason with their fellow citizens.

We need to put pressure on the government to put an end to all this chaos or else we shall come to our very end as a country.

Hear ye oh Kenyans and act before it is too late!

Kenyans, let us be wise ;reflections in conflict

So many things have been happening in this country...I feel a bit confused, I do not even know what to feel...Everybody seems to have their own theory of what happened and what should be done.

I wonder how long this will go on for I cannot take it any more. Those distressed faces that remain imprinted in my mind. I have done my part, I have been peaceful and I have upheld and preached peace wherever I go...I have tried to persuade people to do the right and wise thing: yet I feel I have not done enough and I feel powerless to do any more.

People should now think about the future of their own lives and of this nation. The people have the power: if only they would just realize it. If any of the leaders find that the situation is unbearable, They will run to another country where they will continue to live their blissful lives. And after we have dirtied our hands and consciences fighting in war for them...they will fly right back into the counntry to occupy the seats of kingship which they believe to be their own personal property.

What about us: how many of us will have to die, how many of us will have to suffer so that a few power- hungry individuals can fight for power .Kenyans this is not our battle...some of this M.P.s have been in parliament forever and none of them has ever passed a motion that would ensure that at any given time the elections would be free and fair.Ask yourself why...maybe they saw that the current loopholes would be an advantage to them later...perhaps when they become presidents.
Anyway I do not know what any of the so-called leaders is fighting for but I am sure they are not fighting for democracy nor for this nation....maybe for their own personal interests.

Kenyans let us be wise and let our words and action reflect our wisdom.

This are some of my reflections on what has been going on here.

..to be continued.........

I think the government should allow people to demonstrate peacefully, because when the people are prohibited from demonstrating, they become frustrated and are more likely to become aggressive and destructive.

I think that if people are allowed to demonstrate they will cease to see the demonstrations as trophies which they must get at all costs.People have always wanted to attain what they were forbidden to have.In any case the people have a right to demonstrate and to express themselves.

I think that if the people were allowed to demonstrate, we would experience less destruction and less disruption of public life. The police presence and vigilance can be maintained to ensure security for all citizens.Give the people a chance to express themselves and if they squander it ,then the demonstrations can be banned..but otherwise I think the government needs to review its whole approach to the demonstrations.

One day the trees went out to annoint a king for themselves
They said to the olive tree: "be our king"
But the olive tree answered "should I give up my oil,
by which both gods and men are honoured, to be the king of the trees..huh"?

Next the trees said to the fig tree, "come and be our king "
but the fig tree replied, "should I give up my fruit ,
so good and sweet to hold sway over the trees..."?

The the trees said to the vine, "come and be our king"
but the vine answered, "should I give up my wine,
which cheers both gods and men, to be the king of the trees...?"

Finally the trees said to the thornbush, "come and be our king"
.The thornbush said to the trees, "if you really want to annoint me
king over you come take refuge in my shade, but if not then
let fire come out of the thornbush and consume the cedars ot this land."

(Adapted from Judges 9)

Good leaders stand up and take your positions, because when you do not take up a leadership role
the society suffers. Sometimes when its time for elections one wonders who to vote in to positions of ledership. If there are no good leaders on offer, should one with-hold their vote or should s/he vote in the best from among the worst?

Such dilemmas can be avoided if good leaders stand up to lead...and if society still rejects them then society can take responsibility for the effects of bad leadership i.e. fire burning up the cedars.
