Olympic Dreams

Determination, stamina, devoting your time and energy to realizing a dream, which you are not certain to reach. Talent is not enough in itself, still hardwork in itself has its reward anyways for athletes who choose to follow the long path to success, as they can learn many things about themselves and others through preparing for various competitions including the Olympic Games. However, the most wonderful feeling is when an athlete can be ’there’ and is able to show the world and particularly themselves that they are the best of all.

There is a wonderful song called ’Olympic Dreams’ by a German band called Mr. President. I would like to quote here the lyrics and you can listen to the song at this link on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AClVcmBvxGEfeature=related
Listen to it, because it is one of the greatest of all and expresses the spirit of the Games so truly!! :)

Olympic Dreams

No day before
so full of deep devotion
and in my heart
I feel a strong emotion
Olympic fire
wakes my desire
to join in the games of the world

So far away the day's of pain and sorrow
enjoy the games
there's a new tomorrow
let's share the story
of fame and glory
the party of friendship for all

Refrain:

Goin' for Olympic dreams
Goin' for the gold
Goin' for the medals
That I never thought I'd hold
Flyin' on the wings of freedom
reachin' for the sky
the Olympic dreams will never die

The time has come just do it now or never
a star is born
and it will last forever
congratulations
and celebrations
it's only one moment in time

Refrain

The winner really takes it all
no loser will be standing small
so come on let us celebrate together

Refrain

(performed and written by Mr. President and Nino de Angelo)

I feel very proud of the athletes of my country who reached the 21st place of the overall medal standings for Hungary in Beijing.

Gabor Talmacsi or "Talma" as he is called here in his homeland Hungary, today won the 125 cc motorcycle world championship by finishing at the 2nd place at the season-ending Valencia Grand Prix in Valencia, Spain. He is the first Hungarian to become a motorcycle world champion in any class, and as one can imagine there is so much work and stamina behind his achievement. What is most important beside his talent in motorracing, however, is that he is a very modest and good-willed person who truly believes in fair play. Talma is among the persons who motivate others and show example by the long way they covered, the odds they conquered, experiencing ups and downs...till finally they get to the top. Congratulations, Talma!

Goodbye storks, goodbye summer! / A long journey ahead

So the storks have started out on the long and difficult journey... More precisely on the morning of the 22nd of August they 'got up' early and cleaned out a bit in their nest so that next spring (when they are back) their home in the Hungarian village called Darány would wait for them nice and comfortable. After these arrangements the good parents (Ludmilla and Chuck) asked their four children namely Una, Unika, Uránusz and Unikum in their clattering stork language to get prepared for the long-long road to be taken between Hungary and Cape Colony down in South Africa.* And they flew away... all our stork friends whose home is partly here in Hungary... with the good summer weather leaving after them. The three stork webcams now only show the empty nests in the rain, but those lovely moments of hatching, getting grown up and learning to fly will stay with us nevertheless... Wishing you a safe journey! Come back in spring! :)
I have a strange feeling in me as I think of the big adventure the storks embark upon now, and I cannot help remembering my own life. We all have aims and dreams in life, goals to work for and to be attained, a long and difficult journey we have to make in order to reach what we want. And we have to do this again and again, each time as a new goal appears. Exactly as the storks, although they have the same goal every year, that is to bring up their 'kids' safely, and reach to the warm place before winter.

* The east-european storks, among them the Hungarians fly through the Bosporus then towards the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea which they follow until they reach Africa at the Suez-bay. From this point they fly along the Nile and then cross Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya and Zimbabwe as far as Cape Colony. Some of the storks however stop in the middle of Africa and spend the European winter months there. The whole Darány stork family has been ringed so ornithologists will be able to establish what places 'our' storks visit. The parents will be back next spring, but the youngsters may spend their first year in Africa and return to Hungary only in 2009.

Yesterday's celebrations in Hungary

The following poem is called Szózat (Appeal in English) and is considered as the second national anthem in Hungary. Beside the Hungarian National Anthem (Himnusz) it is usually sung in ceremonies dedicated to celebrate national holiday in Hungary such as yesterday on the 20th of August when we had the day of Saint Stephen (1000-1038) the founder of the Hungarian state.
On the pic you can see the Hungarian crown made of flowers, the flower crown along with other beautiful flower compositions was exhibited on the Flower Carnival which is held always on the 20th of August every year in the town of Debrecen in Hungary.

Szózat (Appeal)

Hazádnak rendületlenűl
Légy híve, oh magyar;
Bölcsőd az s majdan sírod is,
Mely ápol s eltakar.
A nagy világon e kivűl
Nincsen számodra hely;
Áldjon vagy verjen sors keze:
Itt élned, halnod kell.
Ez a föld, melyen annyiszor
Apáid vére folyt;
Ez, melyhez minden szent nevet
Egy ezredév csatolt.
Itt küzdtenek honért a hős
Árpádnak hadai;
Itt törtek össze rabigát
Hunyadnak karjai.
Szabadság! itten hordozák
Véres zászlóidat,
S elhulltanak legjobbjaink
A hosszu harc alatt.
És annyi balszerencse közt,
Oly sok viszály után,
Megfogyva bár, de törve nem,
Él nemzet e hazán.
S népek hazája, nagy világ!
Hozzád bátran kiált:
"Egy ezredévi szenvedés
Kér éltet vagy halált!"
Az nem lehet hogy annyi szív
Hiában onta vért,
S keservben annyi hű kebel
Szakadt meg a honért.
Az nem lehet, hogy ész, erő,
És oly szent akarat
Hiába sorvadozzanak
Egy átoksúly alatt.
Még jőni kell, még jőni fog
Egy jobb kor, mely után
Buzgó imádság epedez
Százezrek ajakán.
Vagy jőni fog, ha jőni kell,
A nagyszerű halál,
Hol a temetkezés fölött
Egy ország vérben áll.
S a sírt, hol nemzet sűlyed el,
Népek veszik körűl,
S az ember millióinak
Szemében gyászköny űl.
Légy híve rendületlenűl
Hazádnak, oh magyar:
Ez éltetőd, s ha elbukál,
Hantjával ez takar.
A nagy világon e kivűl
Nincsen számodra hely;
Áldjon vagy verjen sors keze:
Itt élned, halnod kell.

Written by Mihály Vörösmarty (1836)

Appeal (Literal Translation)

To your homeland without fail
Be faithful, O Hungarian!
It is your cradle and will your grave be
Which nurses, and will bury you.
In the great world outside of here
There is no place for you
May fortune's hand bless or beat you
Here you must live and die!
This ground on which so many times
Your fathers' blood flowed
This, to which, every holy name
One thousand years has coupled
Here fought for home the hero
Arpad's hosts
Here broke apart the prisoner's yoke
Hunyadi's arms
Freedom! Here is carried
Your bloody standard
And our best were felled
During the long war
And through so much ill fortune
After many feuds,
Though depleted, but not broken
The nation lives on this homeland.
And home of the nations, great earth!
Shouts bravely to you:
"A thousand years of suffering
demands life or death!"
It cannot be, that so many hearts
Uselessly spilled their blood
And in vain, so many faithful hearts
Were broken for the homeland.
It cannot be that mind, might
And so holy a will
Would uselessly wither
Under the weight of a curse;
It still needs to come, it still will come
A better age, for which
Fervent prayer yearns
On hundreds of thousands' lips.
Or it will come, if it must come
The glorious death
Where above the funeral
A nation wallows in blood
And the grave, where the nation is lowering,
Nations surround
And in the millions of peoples'
Eyes, a tear of mourning wells.
Be faithful, without fail
To your homeland, O Hungarian:
This is your succor, and if you fall
With its grave it covers you
In the great world outside of here
There is no place for you
May fortune's hand bless or beat you
Here you must live and die!

Translated by Laszlo Korossy

Appeal (Lyrical Translation)

Oh, Magyar, keep immovably
your native country's trust,
for it has borne you, and at death
will consecrate your dust!
No other spot in all the world
can touch your heart as home—
let fortune bless or fortune curse,
from hence you shall not roam!
This is the country that your sires
have shed their blood to claim;
throughout a thousand years not one
but adds a sacred name.
'Twas here brave Árpád's mighty sword
ordained your land to be,
and here the arms of Hunyad broke
the chains of slavery.
Here Freedom's blood-stained flag has waved
above the Magyar head;
and here in age-long struggles fell
our best and noblest, dead.
In spite of long calamity
and centuries of strife,
our strength, though weakened, is not spent;
our country still has life.
To you, O nations of the world,
we call with passioned breath:
"Should not a thousand years of pain
bring liberty—or death?"
It cannot be that all in vain
so many hearts have bled,
that haggard from heroic breasts
so many souls have fled!
It cannot be that mind and strength
and consecrated will
are wasted in a hopeless cause
beneath a curse of ill!
There yet shall come, if come there must,
that better, fairer day
for which a myriad thousand lips
in fervent yearning pray.
Or there shall come, if come there must,
a death of fortitude;
and round about our graves shall stand
a nation washed in blood.
Around the graves where we shall die
a weeping world will come,
and millions will in pity gaze
upon the martyrs' tomb.
Then, Magyar, keep unshakeably
your native country's trust,
for it has borne you and at death
will consecrate your dust!
No other spot in all the world
can touch your heart as home;
let fortune bless or fortune curse,
from hence you shall not roam!

Here in Hungary we have a nice tradition: girls paint eggs before Easter, you can see some of those decorated eggs on the picture, the art of decoration varies from region to region. Nowadays you can buy painted eggs made of wood or ceramics, and they are also great. It is connected to another lovely tradition here when guys went from house to house to sprinkle girls with some parfume ( in older times with water : couldnt be so pleasant) and the girls gave the boys those above-mentioned hand-painted Easter eggs in exchange for the parfume sprinkling. Of course girls needed to wash their hair after Easter because of the various parfumes on their head by the end of the day. :) Unfortunately this tradition is dying out slowly, and can be found mainly in smaller communities like villages, while people who live in cities go out into the open or visit Easter fairs.

Today is the 15th of March, the national holiday of Hungary and on this day we, Hungarians remember the glorious period of our history, the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence of 1848/49.
On the 15th of March in 1848, Sándor Petőfi (1823-1849) recited his poem, the 'Nemzeti Dal' (National Song) on the steps of the Hungarian National Museum. This event marked the beginning of the Hungarian Revolution…

Nemzeti dal

Talpra magyar, hí a haza !
Itt az idõ, most vagy soha !
Rabok legyünk, vagy szabadok ?
Ez a kérdés, válasszatok !
A magyarok istenére
Esküszünk,
Esküszünk, hogy rabok tovább
Nem leszünk !

Rabok voltunk mostanáig,
Kárhozottak õsapáink,
Kik szabadon éltek-haltak,
Szolgaföldben nem nyughatnak.
A magyarok istenére
Esküszünk,
Esküszünk, hogy rabok tovább
Nem leszünk !

Sehonnai bitang ember,
Ki most, ha kell, halni nem mer,
Kinek drágább rongy élete,
Mint a haza becsülete.
A magyarok istenére
Esküszünk,
Esküszünk, hogy rabok tovább
Nem leszünk !

Fényesebb a láncnál a kard,
Jobban ékesíti a kart,
És mi mégis láncot hordtunk !
Ide veled, régi kardunk !
A magyarok istenére
Esküszünk,
Esküszünk, hogy rabok tovább
Nem leszünk !

A magyar név megint szép lesz,
Méltó régi nagy híréhez;
Mit rákentek a századok,
Lemossuk a gyalázatot !
A magyarok istenére
Esküszünk,
Esküszünk, hogy rabok tovább
Nem leszünk !

Hol sírjaink domborulnak,
Unokáink leborulnak,
És áldó imádság mellett
Mondják el szent neveinket.
A magyarok istenére
Esküszünk,
Esküszünk, hogy rabok tovább
Nem leszünk!

(Pest, 1848. március 13.)

In English:

National Song

Rise up, Magyar, the country calls!
It's 'now or never' what fate befalls...
Shall we live as slaves or free men?
That's the question - choose your 'Amen"!
God of Hungarians,
We swear unto Thee,
We swear unto Thee - that slaves
We shall no longer be!

For up till now we lived like slaves,
Damned lie our forefathers in their graves -
They who lived and died in freedom
Cannot rest in dusts of thraldom.
God of Hungarians, we swear unto Thee,
We swear unto Thee - that slaves
We shall no longer be!

A coward and a lowly bastard
Is he, who dares not raise the standard -
He whose wretched life is dearer
Than the country's sacred honor.
God of Hungarians, we swear unto Thee,
We swear unto Thee - that slaves
We shall no longer be!

Sabers outshine chaine and fetters,
It's the sword that one's arm betters.
Yet we wear grim chains and shackles.
Swords, slash through damned manacles!
God of Hungarians,
We swear unto Thee,
We swear unto Thee - that slaves
We shall no longer be!

Magyar's name will tell the story
Worthy of our erstwhile glory
We must wash off - fiercely cleansing
Centuries of shame and condensing.
God of Hungarians,
We swear unto Thee,
We swear unto Thee - that slaves
We shall no longer be!

Where our grave-mounds bulge and huddle
Our grandson will kneel and cuddle,
While in grateful prayer they mention
All our sainted names' ascension.
God of Hungarians,
We swear unto Thee,
We swear unto Thee - that slaves
We shall no longer be!

He has always stayed that simple, good-hearted human being who he had been before the world got to know him as one of the greatest football talents of all times. Puskás Öcsi (Öcsi means ’Little Brother’ in Hungarian, that’s how he was called here in his homeland with lots of affection) was team captain of the legendary Hungarian ’Golden Team’(Aranycsapat) also called ’The Mighty Magyars**’ which won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952. And this same team defeated England by 6:3 in 1953 in the Wembley stadium and also in the return match in 1954 here in Hungary where our team trounced them again, by 7:1. Puskás scored 2 goals on both matches.

It was very interesting about Puskás Öcsi that he was a leftfooted/leftlegged footballer and had a such a sharp logic for the game that he could think well ahead and then realize all those actions on the field before the footballers of the other team could find out about what had actually happened.

He scored 84 goals in 85 international matches.
Mancs, whose name in Hungarian means Paw, has saved many people (among them lots of children) all over the world when he and his owner Laszlo Lehoczki (part of the Spider Rescue Team) travelled to places of natural disasters to help find and rescue people. Once when a severe earthquake hit Turkey, Mancs managed to find a 3-year-old girl alive under the debris days after the disaster. He has ’worked’ in many other countries as well including Columbia, Italy, Egypt, India and Venezuela.
He was the first rescue dog who has a bronze statue erected for him in his hometown Miskolc.

On the 6th of October in 1849 13 generals were executed in Arad , a town in Transsylvania (former part of Hungary) which is now part of Romania. They are known as the 13 martyrs of Arad :

György Lahner ( 1795 – 1849 )
Lajos Aulich ( 1793 – 1849)
János Damjanich ( 1804 – 1849 )
Károly Knezich ( 1808- 1849)
Károly Leiningen-Westerburg ( 1819- 1849 )
Ernő Poeltenberg (1814- 1849)
Ignác Török ( 1795 – 1849 )
József Nagy-Sándor ( 1804- 1849 )
Arisztid Dessewffy ( 1802 – 1849)
Ernő Kiss ( 1799 – 1849)
Vilmos Lázár ( 1815- 1849)
József Schweidel ( 1796- 1849)
Károly Vécsey ( 1807- 1849 )

On the same day in Budapest Count Lajos Batthyány ( 1806 – 1849) the first Hungarian prime minister was executed as well.

The reason for their execution was that they were all fighting for the freedom and independence of Hungary during the Revolution of 1848- 1849 which ended in a bloody reprisal from the side of the Austrians who were backed by Russian troops. At that time Hungary was not an independent country, but our kingdom was subjected to the rule of the Habsburg (Austrian) empire.
After the War of Independence of 1848/49 the era of the so called ’passive resistance” came which lasted until 1867. In 1867 the Compromise between the Hungarian and the Austrian nations was reached, and the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy was formed which meant that Hungary gained at least full internal independence finally (but unfortunately not total independence) and this way came a peaceful era until the First World War.

We Hungarians will never forget all those people who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of our nation.

The remarkable intelligence of cats

Have you ever noticed that cats only miaow when they are in the presence of humans?

The other day I saw a documentary on TV which was about animal communication, and scientists established that cats have the ability to recognize that humans communicate with their mouth. They look at humans as weird creatures, or many times as silly cats who use this strange way of communicating, as our feline favourites prefer using their whiskers, ears, eyes and generally their senses in their own circle to let each other know their ’opinions’ (that's another stuff when they are very angry with each other of course!). This is a much subtle way of communication than our human speaking if we think it along, and we still have a lot to explore on these fields. :-) So, our cat friends are in a way forced to change their communication because of us, they accomodate themselves to our needs in order to be understood.

Humans often become in a way part of a cat community when they develop deep emotional ties with a cat or cats of their own. Cats think that we are so weird cats who cannot catch mouse for example. I wonder if you ever found any dead mice in front of your doorway, or seen your cat coming towards you miaowing with a mouse in their mouth? And you usually cannot make them understand they are very kind, but you don’t need any mouse meat. They are so caring as if you were their little kitten who needs some teaching to become a real, serious cat.

This entry is to remember the four people who lost their lives yesterday evening in Budapest when a thunderstorm hit the fireworks parade which ended our national holiday celebrations of the 20th of August. There were around one and a half million people on the streets of the Hungarian capital when the rapidly arriving storm reached Budapest. Panic broke out and people started to flee. Many of them fortunately found shelter in the Underground but 500 hundred people were injured and four people died as the strong wind (80-90 km/hr) blew tiles off the houses as well as different objects and it was hailing at the same time.To top of the trouble temporarily built tents also started to collapse in the tempest.

The doctors and nurses in hospitals responded to the emergency quickly and they did and still do their best to assist people and save lives. Thank you for their painstaking work.

As everybody, I also have my opinion of the causes of the tragedy but would like to keep it to myself so I will rather stop here now. I feel very sad that such a horrible tragedy could happen in the 21st century in Hungary.

My heart goes out to the victims and their relatives.

20th of August- Hungarian National Holiday in honour of Saint Stephen

Today, on the 20th of August we Hungarians all over the world celebrate our first king Stephen I. { reigned : (997-1001 as a prince) (1001– 1038 as king) } and the foundation of the Hungarian State. King Stephen was a strong ruler and realized in time that we Magyars (that’s how we call ourselves) need to join the Christian Europe by doing away with the tribal, nomade way of living and establish a strong, independent state if we want to survive here in the middle of Europe. He conquered enormous odds and finally managed to reach his goal by spreading Christian faith, organizing the church and a feudal state system with all its institutions and putting an end to paganism. It was not only he but also his father Prince Géza ( reigned 972-997) who did a lot for us to find our place in Europe in the long run but it was Stephen (canonized on the 20th of August in 1083) who in a way completed the work.
Long after the death of Stephen I his right hand was found intact (when he was removed from his original grave) and the Catholic church regards this holy body part as a relic. There is a festive procession every year on this day when the Sacred Right Hand is carried along on the streets of Budapest.
Besides, we have lots of celebrations nationwide on the 20th of August like the Flower Carnival in Debrecen with lots of lovely flower compositions. Other open-air programs include the Celebration of Crafts in the Buda Castle in Budapest which is not only a market of folk artefacts but you can also learn how to make traditional crafts like pots, baskets, wood-carven objects from craftsmen or see how certain Hungarian dishes were made in old times and try them (for example the ’mézeskalács’ = honey-cake :-)). At the same time folklore programs with plenty of music and traditional Hungarian dances make the day more colourful everywhere with an air-show over the Danube and a water-parade which are worth mentioning as well. Even in the tiniest village there are balls and the atmosphere is carnival-like. Fortunately, the weather is lovely and if it stays like this then beautiful fireworks will end the day as usual.
