I regret to inform the YES Nigeria family about the death of one our dear members, Hannatu Yunusa, after a brief illness on the 11th of December 2008.

Hannatu was a friend who believed that young people could change this nation for the better and worked tirelessly in many youth development activities including the areas of good governance, HIV/AIDS, employment and policy advocacy.

I called her sister today and it was almost like speaking to Hannatu. Mamam like her late sister sounded poised and gentle. Exuding empathy in a calm manner told me she knew we would miss Hannatu and asked me to take heart. Instead of comforting the family she was comforting me. For anyone who knew Hannatu this is the exact thing she would have done.

Hannatu was straightforward, wise, humble, with a can do spirit and a mischevious sense of humour.
May her family take heart and know we share thier grief but also celebrate having had the opportunity to know her.

May her soul rest in perfect peace.

Much has been said about the do or die attitudes, the lack of focus on real issues, and personality cults of the participants in this years electoral race. Various initiatives to engage electoral aspirants at all levels were pursued. In my humble opinion I never got the impression that 99% of these initiatives actually made any impression on aspirants that were battling being banned by INEC, thugs, and traitors.. Most aspirants seemed to be concerned with fighting on a personal rather than issue based level and securing enough money for elections. I heard all the usual I will give electricity, roads, and of course the much used JOBS FOR THE YOUTH. With the execption of Pat Utomi (this is not a campaign) I did not hear HOW this things would be achieved. Come May 29 2007 a new administration will be sworn in. When the dust clears we must get our thoughts through to them. If you had a chance to speak to your president(Governor, Senator etc) what would you reccommend he/she does to better this country and ensure employment? Dream big! Speak your mind.
Finally weve reached some discernable point of hope in our democracy. Nigerian law makers put an end to a bid to extend the tenure of the president from two to three terms. This was to be acgieved by having the lawmakers ammend the constitution. Constitutional reforms that were so hastily packaged and aggressively pushed that it didnt take a rocket scientist to see all the other points were just the padding around Project 3rd term.

Well Im astounded Senators allegedly turned down almost a million dollars each in bribes. Proud in fact.

Finally we can focus on systems and not individuals. I love the fact that this whole fracas held us hostage. The outcome has taught us so much.

Last week a rather disturbing incident took place. I went to the market with a Canadian friend who need to buy Nigerian fabric( gorgeous stuff ) to take as presents. Walking in through the back we did a double take. There was a girl ( 20's)lying on the ground with people walking by or at best standing from a considerable distance just looking. I asked around and discovered she must have had and epilectic fit and was out for over an hour. No one had even touched her. I went up to her and turned her over and called some number I found in her bag. To cut the story short a couple of ladies came to help her after they saw I didnt die from touching her and she got home. She had a massive bump on her head from hitting the concrete pavement. I was angry and ashamed my friend saw this. I asked questions later and found out that epilepsy in some cultures is akin to demonic possession and people really believe it is contagious! They were afraid of her! However once I broke the ice and touched her peolple stepped forward to help. I didnt even need to take her home myself.
