I've come across this opportunity. A film crew is looking for an idea of a patriotic documentary. As I usually do, I got involved suggested a couple of ideas, we settled to meet next week and look into the matter.
I had this time to reflect and I really put a couple of questions to myself:

- what does it mean to be a patriot?
- what if patriotism intervenes with individual rights?
- is it worth to multiply images of patriotism via media and indoctrinate youths into dogmas of nationhood?
- and ALL IN ALL IS THERE A NEW GLOBAL PATRIOTISM?
HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE A GLOBAL PATRIOT IN A NATION STATE?

This came as a shock for the general public. The case is still considered to be a political one, thus this sentense makes one think of attempts of those in power to disguise the puppeteers, that orchestrated the bloody incident in the August 2004...

Defence claims they'll turn to the Sumpreme court of Ukraine now and then to the European Human Rights Court. Quite a bit of physical pressure was applied to convicts. May be enough to call off the sentence in the nearest future.

"Terrorist" Judgement day in Kyiv...

On Tuesday, August 16th 2005, at 12:00 the Kyiv city Court of Appeal will pass the sentence to a group of 4 youngsters (aged 19-22) charged with planning and executing a terrorist attack in Kyiv, last fall. The trial that lasted nearly a year is now at its final.

Sentence to the 4 may reach 15 years or life imprisonment.

This trial is publicly considered to be a sorry legacy of the Kuchma regime as the alleged terrorists (some of whom are affiliated to nationalistic Ukrainian circles)were most likely used as "les agents provocateurs" in order to discredit Viktor Yuschenko, -who was a candidate for Ukrainian Presidency at the time of the "terrorist attack".

All 4 youngmen claim they were tortured and put under psychological pressure by police officers and interrogators. They also refuse terroristic motives, saying that the blast was a hooligan act.

3 of the 4 pleaded guilty, one - Dmytro Savchenko, at the time of bombing - audio editor of the opposition "5th TV Channel" insists that he's innocent.

Respected Ukrainian on-line newsletter "Ukrainska Pravda" published an article (http://www2.pravda.com.ua/archive/2005/june/9/2.shtml) earlier this year, describing in blood-chilling details how Dmytro (22 year old) was literally abducted by officers of the Ukrainian Security Service, severely beaten and forced to sign a testimonial that he later rejected.

The Amnesty International has already included Dmytro story to its annual report about the situation with Human Rights in Ukraine, hopefully tomorrow's sentence won't leave place for speculations of those saying that the new, allegedly democratic Yuschenko government will prefer to connive at misdoings of the Ukrainian Judicial System for the sake of not disturbing those previously in power.

No passaran! We expect a just and non-biased decision from the court!

Left Handers Day

When: Always on August 13th

If you are a Leftie, Then Left Handers Day is just for you!

Left Handers, also commonly referred to as Southpaws, are the brunt of more than their share of jokes all year long. How do I know? Yup, you guessed it! It ain't easy being a leftie. But those of us who are, would have it no other way. Lefties are proud of it.

The world is built for right handers. Examples are everywhere. For example:

In school, have you ever seen a left handed desk? They don't exist.
Many left handed items cost more.
Novelty coffee mugs are made with the picture or text for a right handed pick-up.
Scissors for for right handers. Only a lefty would understand this.
The computer mouse you are using as you read this is designed for right handers.
Did you Know? Right handed people operate in the left side of the brain. Left handed people use the right side. Therefore, only left handed people are in their right mind.

Left Hander's certainly earned the right to have a day dedicated to them. And, August 13th is that day. So take a minute to appreciate your left handed friends and loved ones. Don't forget to send them a Left Handed Day Ecard to show your respect.

Remember today and every day: "Lefties have rights!"

Left Handed Facts and Trivia:

Sinistrophobia is the fear of left-handedness.
While many people are left handed, very few are 100% left handed. For example, many Left handers golf and bat right handed. On the other hand, there is a high percentage of righties who are 100% right-handed.
Lefties are also called "southpaws". The term was coined in baseball to describe a left handed pitcher.
Tuesdays are Lefties luck day.
Only about 10% of the population is left handed.
During the 1600's people, thought left handers were witches and warlocks.
International Left Hander's Day was first celebrated on August 13, 1976. It was started by Lefthander's International.
They say everyone was born right handed, and only the greatest overcome it. (he,he,he)
It is believed that all polar bears are left handed.
There is a rumor that octopuses have but one right hand. Scientists are diligently studying this issue.
what: Artistic Performance with R.E.P
who: TakingITGlobal!

Group of Young Artists "Revolutionary Experimental Space", TakinITGlobal members, Foundation of Regional Initiatives, Association of Young Political Scietists and the "Free Youth Magazine" organized an artistic performance in the center of the Kyiv, Ukraine - on the Independence Square.

Surprisingly, we proved to be the only group celebrating the International Youth Day in Ukraine!

During this unique artistic Performace an awkward figure coverd with plastic posed in front of works of young Ukrainian artists and followed young visitors in a threatening manner (we had a few hundred plus a couple of media cams and a bunch of journalists:)) symbolizing the absolete and beaurocratic ways of dealing with youth in Ukraine.

The whole event was planned overnight, we spent 6 hours during the night sending media announcements and preparing leaflets as a result we reached out to hundreds of citizens of Kyiv and much more youths via newspapers and TV that covered the event.

Shockingly, the Ministry of Youth and Sports wasn't aware of the International Youth Day! We made it our task to inform them:)

Look out for photos from the event (beginning of the next week)!

We'll willingly share this successful practice with other youths in the world!!!

Bla-bla Ukrainian style - a lesson in hipocricy.

«Ukrainian Youth willfully proclaims itself and its rights. As head of the state I greet the will of young people to proclaim their dignity and perspectives».

«You are strong (because you press us so hard - olexi), gifted (it takes talent to oppose the inertia - olexi), persistent (coz government never meets our demands - olexi). New Ukrainian government wishes to consider youth a partner(because we are "stupid and voters"? -olexi) and as well we want you to be our partners (hand out your leaflets during elections? - olexi). The state strives to support you (by teaching you a lesson in "only the strongest survives" manner), help you make a successful start (?). We'll do our best to ensure that the young generation of Ukrainians will have a brighter future».

A round of Applause!

"Forget Youth" - UN General Assembly Hearings outcome!

"!Forget Youth!" UN General Assmbly Hearings
It was definitely fun to participate in the well orchestred UN General Assembly "Informal" Interactive Hearings with NGOs. The event is over and now I think It's time to acknowledge that it deliberately failed to give youth "a chance". We are still treated as objects rather than agents of reform.

What is even worse is that UN has completely ignored problems of the region that I represent - Eastern Europe the talk is "Africa .. Africa, Africa" all the time.

Africa is indeed the continent where UN negligence is the most obvious, but! isn't it due to the UN's manner to forget certain issues and over-concentrate on others that has brough Africa to its present measerable condition?

I am pretty much sure that UN won't be able to help out Africa while forgetting about South America, Asia and Eastern Europe.

What's good about the Hearings is that thanks to the event I have come to embrace once and for all that relevant resources will never be given to the youth of the world - it's only through our campaigning and amok-like fighting that we'll be able to change the world for the better. UN is not a reliable partner in this undertaking.

We are not taken into consideration because UN just like the governments of the world is not ready to acknowledge that Youth Participation is a fact, we are conscious of the present day condition of the World far better than the "adult generation" claims to be. We are indeed people of new breed - a responsible, conscious, global generation. Dear Friends! it is time Governments and International bodies started to learn from us and not vice versa. I am sure that we will teach them a lesson!

Time to be frank with ourselves - the only youth voice the governments are willing to hear is the voice of violence. Marginalized.. - that is not what we really are! but for the world powers it is the most convenient mode of thinking about youth.

THis ignorant approach allows governments to escapte the necessity to acknowledge their own canibalistic (because of its consequences) ignorance and inadequacy.

For those interested, an article about drug use in Ukraine. I was a contributor to this article. It goes about abuse of medicine and how private pharmacological companies are actually drug-cortails under cover.

Think about it - a network of drug-retailers all over the country - in every neighbourhood, in the very pharmacy where Ukrainian families by toothbrushes and mixtures.

Why invent an expansive drug realization system then pharmacies offer better retailing opportunities?

Hello, I would like to draw your attention to an article of mine recently published in Ukraine's top web magazine - Ukrainska Pravda.
It is titled "Field study of Ukrainian judgement".

Sorry to non-Ukrainian speakers, but I guess you'll learn the meaning from the photos..

The article covers a trial were four 20 year-some old youngmen are convicted of planning and executing a terrorist bombing in Kiev last fall. Those who followed Ukrainian elections know that pre-electional battles envolved a lot of dirt - this story is a Universal (not a nation specific)just an example of how politicians forget top stories of yesterday and thus.. ruin lifes..

Strange as it is... as of present there isn't a single youth magazine in Ukraine which would write on youth and politics, culture and literature with skill and expertise and... in Ukrainian.

The case is that there wasn't any ambition out there (in the media field) to work with youth as a stake-holder in the fields mentioned. On the contrary - attitudes have been those of paternalism and educatory-consumerizm.
to be continued...
