Motivation Building Through Talk Show

When we were at school, we had found famous people in our lesson. It was happened because we needed the icon for ourselves. We have known Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, and others. In fact, those person were famous but not for some people who really admired or chose them as their figure in purpose to build a motivation.

Less motivation could bring laziness to people, especially children and teenagers. In this case, they should find their own icon, but no one will do it as their purpose to. From that reason, its reason could be something called “Fun”. Yes, in raising our motivation is really hard if we have been influenced by fun activities. For example, it’s playing something with a friend, playing computer game or gathering with gang on the sidewalk. If they want to gather for doing something right, it’s like making homework, discussing issues and finding solution of problem, it could not be a big deal. But, in fact, just a several children or youth are doing such kind of better activities.

When children or teenagers do not have an icon or something could raise their motivation, parents have a big responsibility for it. So what parents can do for it? At first, start to invite them to have a little discussion about everything, as the first step, let’s bring their favorite interest in talking, after that, let’s give a problem and find a solution. That’s a simple way. But, sometime parents are fully busy with their own activities, when they have a time for their children, they didn’t notice it.

From those problems, for children and teenagers who wants to raising their motivation. This is the great way and it’s of course “fun”. The question is “what is it?”

Talk show could be our solution. But, what kind of talk show?
In Indonesia, we have known about Empat Mata. It is the famous talk show in Indonesia, because the Master of Ceremony is the ugly person. But, in fact that he is rich and famous. How it could be? If we are looking from the content of talk show, it could be not really interesting and could raise our motivation. But, the way of talk show process is really fun and exciting. But, don’t forget, the main point in here is the icon, the Master of Ceremony. He’s maybe not handsome like famous actors in Indonesia, but he could be famous with something else. So, from the statement, we could make a conclusion that we should find our secret skill. With it, you could be famous like him. But don’t forget to try and in you failed, please try again. No give up in your life dictionary.

How about if it didn’t work on me?
Let’s find another talk show! But, what is it?
Kick Andy, it’s a talk show where the guests are not actress, actor, or the great person as you known. But who are they? The answer, they are people who never give up and finally they have reached what they dreamed for. This is the wonderful talk show and it’s entertaining. If you watch it, you could be known what kinds of difficulty where they found when they were working for reaching their dream. Sometime, you could cry, but you also could laugh. But, the main point in here, it’s you have to be like them. Working hard from the beginning and you will get the result in the end, if no, try again and find the other path, reach it until you know you have gotten it.

But they are unknown person and poor person sometime, how could be the icon for us?
The question above is the answer! Unknown people or poor person sometime could be an icon. To be an icon, it doesn’t mean they have to be famous first, but, they must be a hero for them at first, hero for environment, hero for people, and it’s deeply closed as a secret until it’s revealed by itself, or maybe revealed by Kick Andy.

Beside an icon, you will get the new information and great topic to discuss with friends. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s find the greatest talk show, in Indonesia if you are Indonesian, but, if you interest in world issues and icons from other country, you can watch Oprah. Let’s turn on your TV and find something interesting but also could raising your motivation, interest, and knowledge.

How to do An Action Towards MDGs Achievement

Written by: Iswahyudhi N. R

There is not all of youth known about Millennium Development Goals. But, they know about what is happening in their country. In developed country, it’s common if youths know much about MDGS. How is about in developing country?

The situation above has been solved by youths itself. It is awareness campaign as the solution. Doing the campaign is the easiest that can we do for our world. But, before that, we have to do something, something as we known as an action. And these are my ideas:

1st action: Gathering friend.
Objective: Making a group for action toward MDGs achievement.

Gather your friends in one place, especially your close friends. For example, it’s your house. There, you have to do kind of presentation about world issues which are pressing our country. The authentic proves is needed in here. So, you must find proves from media, for example in internet and newspapers. These proves have a role as the making an awareness. When you are presenting the world situation, you have to present what is MDGs to your friends if they don’t know about it. The members are no need to much. You can do action with 6 until 10 persons or members in your group.

After you have finished your presentation, tell your reason in that gathering. Tell them your vision and mission as your purpose in making action group. And, in the end, you have to put a name for your group. In your group, tries no mentor, no leader, or no lower member. You have a same privilege. If you can do it, if you are enjoying with the management, it doesn’t matter too.

2nd action: Visiting village.
Objective: Gathering MDGs situation information at the village that is you visiting.

Bring your group to the small village in your country, if you can, try to go to hinterland. Ask the people there about 7 goals of MDGs which are happening in there, but do not touch MDGs in directly because they don’t know about it. Try to close with them using friendly approach.

If you need the statistic files, you can ask the village administration in there. If it is still not enough, you can ask the Statistics Agency in your district or city where you live. These files will help you to know about what should you do for youth action in that village someday. Which one is the majority goal that should be done by your group, and make those problems in a list.

3rd action: Design the action
Objective: Provide the action design for MDGs achievement.

This is the third step. Your group must discuss about the model of action. What kind of action that suitable on the problems which faced by people in the village that has been visited by you? Find it by discussion.

What kinds of action are they? The actions must be the real action. For example, you can do a teaching reading and writing program to children and illiterate people in village that have been observed by your group. But, at first you have to make a step or design about how to do it, what is the first step of it or how to begin? That is the function of this design.

O ya, I almost forget, try to make an action that could not spend much money; at least your group can get the funds by your group members. It should be like a trip where you can spend much money for it. So, why not for this project?

4th action: Let’s go!
Objective: Implementation of Action.

Simple! Let’s Do the design, make documentations about your group works, and make it as your lovely trip or adventure. But, don’t forget that you need time to stay there. You must have a good fund of it. But, how could we find the funds?

For find funds or sponsors for your action, you can do your own contributions and all of your friends in group. You also can find them with make a partnership with government, by making a short proposal.

5th action: Publication of Action
Objective: Let people know about what have you done for your place, your province/state, your country, especially for youths in your place.

Publish your activity (action) from newspaper, web, blog, or other media that could be known by most of people, especially for youths in where you live. Try to approach youths using media of information that they use mostly. It can help in raising the awareness to them.

6th action: Let’s go to school
Objective: Campaign about MDGs, your group, your action, and gathering new members.

Write a letter to the high school about your group will do a visitation to the school. I think the principle will appreciate your action.

Use the documentations that you have when you were doing your action in hinterland or small village as evidences of situation. Tell the students about what MDGs stand for and what are they? Tell about children and youths role in MDGs.

From this action, you have to give the information about MDGs, but don’t forget to give information about your group. Tell them about your group purpose to. Tell them about they can do the same thing with you. Tell them about how to start. In the end, if they don’t know about how to make a group or start the action, just invite them to your group.

7th action: Evaluation and Find the Next Action
Objective: Finding the mistakes from your action about what are the insufficiencies about your action and your group? And find the next action by the same way (from 1st until 7th).

Just do the evaluation about your action. You have to know how success your action, if the percentage is enough you can do the next action, if it’s not, you have to find the other action but have a same target with your last action. Make the new designs.

8th action:Celebration
Objective: Awarding your action.

We need to celebrate something after we have done something. This idea is needed for personal or group. The celebration can give the positive aura for our spirit in doing something. When your works have been awarded, you will be satisfied and you will want it again. So, it can bring the new spirit and new idea for you. If you celebrate your action with your entire group by something fun, no doubt, you will feel the satisfaction on your work, yourself, and pride to your group.
Next action will be easy, at least.

Last action:	Have fun with it!

Just think all of actions that have been done by you are fun. Good appreciation, positive estimation or thinking, and positive works can make all of works become so full of fun.

“If you cannot talk, just do it by your brain, hand, and your smile…”
“Think if world can be reached by your hand…”
“See the world by your own hand, own skills, own dream…”
“We have one dream, that is live in peace…”

I think, I have to read
I think, it’s Yes. Issues are from MDGs is really important, although it’s like so simple because it’s concerned to quantitative. For example, in Education sector, it was fine with 94.7% children were listed in Elementary school. But, when their school had leaky roofs, or just had limited book, and in the end teachers were incompetence so for children who have to go to school had gotten qualified education. Unfortunately, the education target in MDGs have not concerned or studied the quality aspect.

How could be?
The reason is it is more difficult than measuring the quality, although it’s not impossible. You can predict the quality of teachers, pr examination result, but it will be difficult when we measure and get the information of quality. This case brings us to the next hug problem. In big country and coloring, Indonesia. The national rate is not enough. For example, the hope of life in national is in 68 years. But, it is varying between 73 years old in Yogyakarta until 61 years old in Nusa Tenggara Timur. Besides, the province rate doesn’t break the district condition. So, in majority, the MDGs files have a limitation.

So, it’s too useless
Do not take the early decision. MDGs are not about the measurement and rate, but they will push us for doing something real. Preventing the death of mother is more important when we are just counting the rate of mothers died when they are born a child. The important thing is not just counting how many Indonesia’s children which in severe or moderate underweight, but also making sure that all children will get the good nutrient. One of the MDGs’ benefits is the kinds of problems which have been brought to the big attention for all elements, including people in wide. But, the report about the improvement of MDGs in district is also needed.

So, what for the National Report of MDGs is made?
Let’s think this is as the beginning point as a way of introducing the kinds of problems in generally. So, people in all of country can think and find the solutions. A national report can be added in to the international system which has a role to note the achievements of MDGs in whole of the world.

3rd Goal: Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women
Target 4: Eliminating the lameness of gender in elementary and high education, it must be better than in 2005, and this elimination must be going on at least in 2015

The main indicator is the ratio of women and men in elementary, junior high and senior high education. In Indonesia, all of them have been reached with 99.4% of elementary school rate, 99.9% in junior high school, and 100.0% in senior high school, and 102.5% in university.

Second indicator is the ratio of awaken of letters (reading skill) for women to men in distance 15-24 years old. In here, we (Indonesia) have reached the target with ratio 99.9%.

Third indicator is the women contribution in paid, non-agriculture sector. In here, we are far from the equality. The rate is just 33%.

The forth indicator is the proportion of women in parliament where the proportion for now, it is just 11.3%

These all are the forth target for Indonesia toward achieving Millennium Development Goals

Talking about MDGs (Part 2)

How long?
It’s based on the department. For government, it’s used to easy in repairing the education sector better than health sector. The improvement of education sector is commonly caused by school. Meanwhile, the improvement in health sector is needed more than the effective service. Other factor is someone smoking, or does someone have a good pole of eating have a significant role. In other hand, whatever the sector, it’s possible in deciding the target and working on the achievement. For example, we can make everybody can drink a health water in certain time persistently. It is also in combating malaria, dengue, or preventing flood and traffic jam. Of course, there is something in its achievement. It needs more time longer than others.

Who have decided the targets?
It could be anyone. You? For example. You can decide the target for community, school, or health centre around you. It’s also the local government could decide the target of new health centre development, or school class room. The main government could do the same thing too. Actually, in this time, both of them had done those things. For example, there was taget in achieving the 9 years primary education in 2009. And the same thing was also happened in global level. Especially it’s based on the international agreement. Since around 20 years, there had many international meetings which Indonesia was joined with world countries in declaring the global target based on the household production, education for all, and also combating all diseases, it’s like malaria and HIV/AIDS. And could be, you all have never known or heard about it. But there is still much target which should be the target with all of world people.

Okay, but do they have something to do with me?
Maybe, you feel all of them are not your business. Meanwhile, all countries are merged in United Nation, including Indonesia. They had tried to carry and give lots of targets of development which are not socialized. In September, 2000, all of world leaders had met in New York for declaring “Millennium Declaration” as one of willing in creating conducive environment for development and eradication of poverty. For making all of it become true, they had formulated 8 Millennium Development Goals.

Are they just eight?
Correctly, it has eight general goals. They consist of poverty, health, and the empowering women. But, in every goal has “targets” which more specified and calculated. Related the improvement women role, for example, it has been targeted the amount of equality of women and men in school. It’s also the how much women work or sitting down in parlement. Those eight millennium goals are consisted poverty, education gender equality, children mortality, maternal health, and several main diseases, environment, and global issues which related with aid commerce and debt.

So, we are trying against poverty and diseases. I think, it’s hard to achieve.
As you know that all goals which had been declared are realistic enough. There are long term targets for achieve poverty until it is done. But, the MDGs are just decided the reducing as the poverty become a half. Meanwhile, for HIV/AIDS, the goals are pressing the spreading of epidemic, and for the education, the target is more ambitious. It is making sure that 100% children have gotten the primary education.

When all of goals could be reached?
The biggest parts of them are targeted in 2015, with the 1990 as the main value. For example, in Indonesia, the proposition of people who live in under of poverty line in 1990 was around 15.1%. In 2015, we must able to reduce the rate become a half, there is 7.5%

What have we achieved?
Based on the poverty problem, there is no big improvement which has been achieved. In 2007, the our rate of poor people (16.6%) was still higher than 1990. So, in next eight years, there is many things must be done by us. Meanwhile, for several other goals of MDGs, we must success. For example, in rate of children participation in elementary school have been reached 94.7%. But, if we more careful in detail, the condition of poverty were not bad based on the rate has been shown in the report progress MDGs in Indonesia based on Indonesian Advocates. Contrast, the condition of education is not better than the rate above. If you want to know, you can read the report if you want to know much about it.

Local Language: Totally Disappeared or Hold Out

Language is the method of human communication, either spoken or written, consisting of the use of words in a structured and conventional way or the system of communication used by a particular community or country. Language also has become the important part in our life could explain about our nation, where we live, what environmental we stay or live.

There has prediction about around 100 languages from 6500 languages will be disappeared in every year. More or less 100 languages that are spoken in California and more than 200 languages of Aborigine in Australia have disappeared. I have predicted that half of languages in world will be disappeared in next century. The question is how about the existence of our native languages in next 20 years?

I have predicted that half of language in the world will be totally disappeared in next 20 years. This prediction could be proven by evidences. In California and Oregon, Wailaki, Nongati, Lassik, Sinkyone, Umpqua, Coquille, Appelegate, and Cheto have died. As we know that, Ubykh, a language in Turkey has died in 1992. In USA, Kalapuya just has 1 or two speakers. Cowlitz just has possibility 2 speakers remaining from population of about 200. Coptic, a language has been replaced by Arabic. How about Ainu, a language in Hokkaido, Japan? How about in Indonesia?

Based on opinion above, the extinction of language has become the very important issue in science. I am apprehensive in this situation, but we also don’t know about hundred languages have not identified yet. Without documentation and revitalization efforts, language as an accumulation of human knowledge or science will be totally disappeared, or may be lost without documentation.

This phenomenon is effect of bilingualism. Nation language has a role in “pulling over” the native languages, because of politic. In economic, nation language is more important than native language. As the result, nation language is going to grown and local language has leaved behind. The tendency of nation language as the mother language in daily communication also gives an effort in making a local language as the one of extinct languages. Besides, the rapid of morality, the descending of local languages user in some of region will be descended by intermarriage of ethnic which bring nation language as their daily language.

Based on Atlas of the World’s Language in Danger of Disappearing, UNESCO, Indonesia has more than 640 local languages which more than 400 languages of Malayo-Polinesia and 240 languages are Papua Languages (2001:40). From that amount, more or less 154 languages must be revitalized, 135 languages have classified as extinct language and 15 languages absolutely are died. If this situation is growing fast, I am afraid that could be happened in other local languages in Indonesia.

This situation will bring the new problem in next 20 years. The pressure of nation and international languages toward local languages could kill 2000 languages from 6500 languages in the world based on the prediction above. This condition could be more complex if the extinction of language is faster than before. Not only 2000 languages could be disappeared in this world but also the unknown languages that never be recorded in world document are lost, too.

The most languages are used by speaker will be the main problem in destroying local languages. Technology and media of information have used English and common language that used by people. The value of language will appear in international languages. International language has become the daily language for people and they will forget about their local language. No doubt, if we do not have the way in preventing our local language from extinction, our nation language could be disappeared.

We have to know local languages are our precious literatures and assets. A language could explain who we are and what tribe we are. If this happened, we have made the new era in next 20 years. No local languages anymore in our world.

From here, we must find the way out in preventing our local language from the extinction. The first act as the preventing action, we can start from making a local fairytale movie with local language as the main language. In local advertisement, we can use local inviting expression language. Second, we can start on internet. We invite government to make a site for local language. For example, Kutai Kartanegara (a regency in East Kalimantan) has own site about Kutai language. In this site, we can find news, funniest stories, and share everything in Kutai Language. Third, we must show local languages are fun and popular by performing local language in theater. We also can use short story as the medium for preserving local language. Forth, we can preserve local language by doing a festival of traditional, customs, and traditional popular music. If we can do this preventing continual in every year, I believe we have descended the disappearing of language in the world. Besides, we also do not forget that we have lost some language in the world and we must to revive those languages. For example, Japan has tried to revive Ainu from extinction. Just eight people spoke Ainu on the island of Hokkaido in the late 1980s, but now it is being revived after years of ostracism and decline. It is a proof that we could revive our extinct language. But, it is still return to the people who want to revive our heritage from extinction. If majority people don’t think about how important local language, we was trapped in one language in our future.

In our hand, we purpose about where will we bring local language in this world? Disappear or die?
Let’s we hold out our local languages and protect them from the extinction!

2nd Goal: Achieve the Universal Primary Education
Target 3: Make sure there in 2015 all of children, girl or boy will able to finish the primary education in complete.

There are 2 relevant indicators. First, for the participation in elementary school, Indonesia has achieved 94.7% as a rate. Based on the condition, we could reach the 100% as the target in 2015. Second indicator is related with graduation. It’s the proposition of children who was started from 1st year and success achieved in 5th year of elementary school. For Indonesia the proposition 2004/2005 was 82%. But, elementary school has 6 year as the graduation rate. Because of it, for Indonesia, I thought it was suited when we saw the achievement until 6th grade. The total was 77% where it tends to increase. It has meaning we can reach the target/goal. The graduation data was used in this report based on Departemen Pendidikan Nasional. It was based on the data of school registration. It was different with Susenas (2004) where they had calculated the value which it was bigger, it was around 95%. The third indicator for this achievement was capability in reading for people in range 15-24 years old. In this case, we had been good enough in achievement 99.4%. Although, the quality of it was high. Because, the test of reading and writing from Susenas was too simple.

1st Goal of MDGs report in Indonesia

1st Goal: Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger
1st Target: Reducing the proposition of resident who is still live under poverty line become a half between 1998 – 2015

It’s using a national poverty, the value of Indonesia poverty in 1990 was 15.1%. The element of accounting was changed in 1996, so, actually, the file after it cannot be compared with it – from years before. If we are using the element of accounting files in this time. The value in 1990 will be higher than 15,1%. But, because there has repeating of calculation. This report was used 15,1%. In 2006, it has increasing of poverty and it is decreasing step by step. In 2007, it was 16.6%. Based on the situation lately, it must be have possibility in increasing poverty become 7,5% in 2015. Meanwhile, using 1 dollar as the poverty line in a day, the situation is completely different. Based on that value, Indonesia has achieved the target because Indonesia able to decrease the value of poverty from 21% becomes 7.5% in 2006.

Two other indicators gave addition information. The complicated indicator was ‘poverty gap ratio’ which it was measuring the difference between income average of poverty people and line of poverty. In 1990, the ratio was 2,7% and 2,9% in 2007, it showed the situation of poor people was still flat, no movement. The simple indicator was the spreading of income: the amount of consumption of poor people in national is 20%. This was also giving no improvement or movement between 1990 and 2006. The value was still in around 9%.

2nd Target: Reducing the proposition of people who is suffered of hunger become half of it in 1990 and 2015

The first indicator is the prevalence children under 5 in underweight. The value for right now is 28% and it could be increased. With this value, it showed us, it (will) not achieve the target. Second indicator is the proposition of people who consumed the minimum needs for a day using the calculation of FAO, it’s seem Indonesia is still in the right way for achieve the MDGs.

What do you want in the future? For you, the answer could be healthy and happy family, and also have a better education for children. Besides, you also wish could give the sufficient household needs and have a dreamed house. You also dream freedom in the view of democracy, it’s about live in peace in Indonesia, where the freedom is about giving ideas and life arrangement, guaranteed by laws.

Are they the will of people?
I think yes. It could be fun when Indonesian people can be prosperous. Compared by 60 years before, when this Republic had been built and got the improvement rapidly. We were richer with the average of income, five times of income in that time.

But, I don’t feel I was rich at that time.
It could be true, that’s just the average limitation. Half of us had luck. But, this time, most of people had got prosperous life already. It’s not just as the half of income measurement. Let’s see kinds of improvement in your environment. Now, street, school, health centre, and hotspot have been made already.

But, all of it had brought extreme pollution, noise, and corruption.
Not all situations could be better. Sometime, the situation has been worst. Maybe, you could lose your job, your children are getting sick, or your house was drowned by flood. Situation could be getting worst for government in general. Ten years before, for example, it was monetary crisis. People were poor suddenly. Besides, when walking the period of independent, Indonesia was move in the right path, it can be seen in achieving ‘Development of Human’. It was the growing of income and education development. At that time, Indonesia, we could have long life and more healthy.

If it was worked, why Indonesia is still poor?
Actually, Indonesia had been categorized as the country with average income. This reason based on the Gross National Index (GNI), it was counted from total market worth from goods/commodities and services which resulted by one country in several period, Indonesia’s earning in per capita of 2007 was $ 1.420. This value is same with Rp. 1.077.000 for a month. If we compare it with another country, Indonesia is charted in 139th from 209 countries in the world (World Bank GNI 2007).

The 139th? Is it not really good, right?
It’s better if Indonesia was higher than it. But, the chart is not important. Sometime, there is a country could be grown faster when the other is moving slowly. But, something that must be seen is about what happened in Indonesia. Are much people get out from the poverty? And then, Are much people could read and write? Or maybe, are lots of children immunized until immune from measles, smallpox or polio. Next, Could we have a long life?

Answer?
Yes, if we compare it with 60 years before. They were born in 1960, in average, they had hope for life in 41 years. But, our children where was born in 2007, wondering that for a long life until 68 years. In 1960, it was only around 30% of resident just able to read. Now, almost all of teenager which starts to in youth, at less, they did not have primary skill of reading and writing. So that’s why there has lots of something that must be done. Million people are still live in poverty. Around quarter of Indonesian children is still in severe underweight situation. Too many schools in this country are insufficiency of books, teaching learning tools, or competence teachers. Indonesia is still a developing country and it is still need time to achieve standards that have been achieved in developed country.

In July 1, 2008. Forum Anak Daerah Kalimantan Timur (East Borneo Children Forum) and Tourism Ambassador 2007 had done the activity in Sempaja Village in concern to celebrate the Children Day. We had done the small competition for children. It's a drawing poster. The theme was The Right of Children. Beside that, we also gave the aid for the poverty people in that village.

This activity was not only held in Village only. East Borneo Children Forum also did this activity in several different places. One of them was the children prison in Samarinda. We had campaign about the right and the law protection of children.

After this activity, in 25 July, 2008. East Borneo Children Forum and Me (Bahasa Ambassador 2008) had done talkshow in Samarinda (City). I had delivered about achieving MDGs and the role of children in achieving MDGs. In that time, I really surprised when lots of them didn't know about MDGs. Especially, for High School Students. So, that was the first campaign of MDGs in Samarinda. For the Next, we will do another peace building campaign and voluntary action towards achieving MDGs.
