Hey everyone!

Hope everyone had good holidays, and hope exams went well for all of those who were writing them in December. December was a bit of a slower month for me (due mainly to the aforementioned exams), however my biggest accomplishment was planning for the next four months. I've connected with people and groups that I'll be working with in the new year, and set out some tangible goals for myself.

My main objectives for January are:
[Engagement Action] Implement half day Climate Change: Guide to Action workshop for high school students.
[Engagement] In collaboration (hopefully!) with SAGA develop and plan to implement (probably won't actually happen in January) workshops based on Change that Clicks modules
[Engagment Action] Give Web 2.0 workshop to local organizations.

Cheers!

Hey everyone!

I had a pretty awesome meeting today with a friend of mine, Alex, who is the founder of an organization here called SAGA (Students Against Global Apathy) http://www.ualberta.ca/~saga/. We were talking about using various technologies including Web 2.0 for communication within and between organizations, as well as between orgnizations and those they're trying to reach. It really geared me up to dive right into planning the Change that Clicks workshops...and I'm hoping that someone(s) from SAGA will be able to help me out with various parts of it.

We were also talking about interactions between organizations in Edmonton. It was inspiring to me to be talking about organizations helping each other, supporting each other and collaborating together, and some ideas came up that I'll try to incorporate in any Web 2.0 for Social Change workshops i do in the new year.

Anyways, I guess I'm really focusing in on technology now with these two workshops, and with school and exams suddenly over I'm feeling energized and excited to get things done! Hope everyone's doing well and enjoying the holiday season.

Hey team!

This is just a superquick post to share some info on a fun event happening in E-town. There is a march ending at the legislature building on December 7th for the climate change day of action. Alberta's tar sands have been compared to Mordor from Lord of the Rings...which for those of you who aren't as big of a lotr geek as I am is basically a dark barren land where there isn't any natural stuff (trees, grass, animals) anymore. The theme of this march is therefore lord of the rings. It's called March to Mordor: Climate Change Day of Action. They've got some fun posters going and they're generally creating a pretty good buzz. Just thought it was a fun thing to share!

Take care!

These past couple of days I've been delighted to have Irena visiting me from Toronto! She came out to attend a workshop with me called Beyond Graduation, put on by the Plan Institute. http://www.planinstitute.ca/ TIG helped to develop the online component (a fabulous website!). The workshop was aimed at youth with disabilities who will soon be, or recently have graduated from high school and their families. Unfortunately, we didn't get any youth out! There were lots of parents and people from PLAN affiliated organizations, but a definite lack of youth. That being said, the workshop went really well and there was lots of discussion, as well as lots of interest in the website! Yay!

So that was most of Saturday, which didn't leave too much time for Irena and I to hang out outside of the workshop, but we did get the chance to bond over our love of coffee and Daniel Craig (we went to see the new James Bond movie Saturday night). It was great to have her here.

Hey all!

Just a super quick update on what I've been up to lately. I've been working on developing a Youth Engagement workshop with Andree and Leslie from Alberta's Youth Volunteer. Andree and I piloted it on Tuesday, and it went really well. We drove to Kananaskis, which is about a 4 hour drive from Edmonton, and made it there in one piece, despite narrowly avoiding a head-on collision on Hwy 2 because another car was driving the wrong way in our lane on a divided highway! That definitely got the adrenaline running early that morning. We arrived at the UofC biogeo something or other research facility, where the ACEE leadership clinic was being held about an hour before presenting. Although we ended up presenting to fewer people than we had anticipated, we had lots of great discussion and great ideas. We did some group work and everyone took on a "youthful persona" at the end....we had everyone from "the princess" to "the cool kid" to "the super engaged youth". We had lots of fun with that. Unfortunately, we ran a bit short on time and didn't have as much time to dedicate to our activity as we would have liked. Live and Learn!

Driving back we went through some wicked fog....we pulled over in Lacombe for a bit to try and find some highway condition reports....and then couldn't find our way back to the highway because the fog was so thick, we kept missing the exit signs! Happy to report that the fog soon cleared up and we made it home without further troubles. Whew!

Cheers!

Well tomorrow, October 17th is the Int'l day for eradication of poverty. There is a huge event taking place at the University of Alberta, and you can already feel the excitement! Tents have been going up in Quad all day, and the amount of phone calls, emails, and text messages about setting up, volunteering, bringing materials, etc. between everyone who is involved (and those who are getting involved! yay!) is astounding. All the trees (literally, all the trees) on campus are wrapped with Make Poverty History white tape, and there are messages in chalk all over advertising the event. So here's to hoping all goes well and that the events in other universities, schools, cities, etc. go well too!

Hopefully I'll get some pictures up on here after the event...

Hello!

Well after a BUSY and very FUN weekend in Toronto learning all about TIG and CLC and meeting all the fabulous team members, I think I'm finally ready to get started. And it's a good thing...I keep getting contacted by people in Edmonton who are doing things they think I'll be interested in, or wanting me to take part in various projects. Umm...they all seem to know what I'm supposed to be doing much better than I know! Haha. In all honesty, it's great. The starting point I need was there waiting for me and now I'm ready to jump on bord with all sorts of great things going on in Edmonton. I've been playing around with the TIG site quite a bit today, since in a few weeks I need to give a little training session on how to use it. There's just so much to do on the site. Too bad I don't have a boring office job where I can spend hours playing on the TIG website instead of working. Sigh. Just kidding, I've had boring office jobs and they sucked my soul right out. And on that happy note, I'm signing off.

Cheers!
