The Tide is Turning on Water

hellip;some restaurants are stopping its sale, one bottle at a timehellip;

The Washington Post reported yesterday that some restaurants are no longer selling bottled water. New Yorkrsquo;s Del Posto does not allow sharing/selling bottled Perrier or San Pellegrino. The compelling argument relates to the absurdity of moving water all over the world, as well as costs involved in transportation and packaging, not to mention the environmental debris that results, such that beverage companies like Coca Cola, Pepsi, Nestle etc., are seeing their sales drop while negative consumer and environmental movements gain the upper hand.

Morevoer, water scarcity is raising fears that prices could increase down the road. ldquo;Water is the new oil,rdquo; said Steve Dixon, who manages the Global Beverage Fund at Arnhold amp; S. Bleichroeder, repeating what has become a mantra as climate change and population growth tax water supplies.

Statistics show that about 33% of the worldrsquo;s people live in water-stressed/water-scarce areas; the percentage likely to rise as the years pass. Thus issues of sustainability will become more challenging as more and more water will need to be harvested to meet the demandhellip;if it rises.

Water is still cheap, but that is changing.rdquo;It is currently not a very big cost. The issue is where it will it go in the future,rdquo; said Andy Wales, head of sustainable development for brewer SABMiller, which used 94.5 billion liters of water in its latest fiscal year. That works out to 4.5 liters for every liter of beer it made.

One of the targets (3) is to halve, by 2015, the proportion of the population without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation. The steps being taken now at the individual level could go a long way towards meeting this goal.

Mums for Malaria

ldquo;If you would be happy for a lifetime, grow Chrysanthemums.rdquo; (a Chinese philosopher)

Planting chrysanthemums good for malaria, for the environment/planet, good for bringing in $$$ to local communitieshellip;

Issues of sustainability are critical in any project if we want really that the project has a longterm viability. Malaria No More is doing great work in spreading awareness about malaria and doing something about it by providing bednets.

While following the tweeters and mosquito bednets, I began to have flash backs to my days in the UN working in water and sanitation, organizing with communities in ridding their environment of puddles, old tires with stagnant water, and other places of mosquito breeding. Too much water can create too many disease problems.

Bednets are very important and every effort to rid the earth of this deadly scourge should be applauded.  We also need to examine ways of making the efforts sustainable, for, as an old man told me when we were talking about using bednets - we need to have beds firsthellip;

In answer to the Bill Gates Foundation in which they were looking for ideas to Create New Tools to Accelerate the Eradication of Malaria. I submitted the idea of Growing Chrysanthemums to help accelerate the eradication of Malaria.

Of note, bednets are currently treated with either Permethrin amp; Pyrethrum Insecticides (One is a natural insecticide the other is syntheti)

Pyrethrum, natural pyrethrum or ldquo;insect powderrdquo; a natural insecticide made from the flowers of certain species of chrysanthemum. It is a mixture of several different compounds called pyrethrins and cinerins. Originally pyrethrum was made by grinding dried chrysanthemum flowers into a powder.

Today, pyrethrum is extracted from chrysanthemum plant material with solvents. Pyrethrum is still widely used today in household insect sprays where it is usually combined with another chemical ldquo;synergistrdquo; called piperonyl butoxide (PBO). PBO helps pyrethrum by enhancing its toxicity in insects. (source livingwithbugs)

The Rockefeller Foundation began using pyrethrum sprays experimentally in India to great

success and this method of malaria control was recognised as enormously valuable. The use

of pyrethrum was then expanded to Assam by Dr. D. K. Viswanathan, the well known Indian malariologist in 1942.

Beginning Earth Day 2009 and beyond we should start a movement on the planting of chrysanthemums and the extracting of the inherent herbicide pyrethrum to treat the bednets, thus beautifying the environment, generating income, and treating bednets/malariahellip; MUMS FOR MALARIA

For every effort there has to be some thought to the sustainability of the effort, to what happens when the source dries up. Let us create a Mums for Malaria Movement

Citigroup bailout: Citigroup lives on, the world can sleep.

Citigroup lives to fight another day. Thatrsquo;s the good news in the governmentrsquo;s mega bailout. The provision of yet more government capital - plus a guarantee for a $306bn ldquo;bad bankrdquo; - should do the trick of restoring confidence. Thatrsquo;s important not just for Citi, whose share price fell by a fearsome 60% last week, but for all financial markets.

The Legend of Valentines Day - the New St Valentine- Obama Love

   Over time, Valentines Day has become blended with two other ancient Roman holidays, Lupercalis and Juno, both associated with romance; however, Saint Valentines life exemplifies a broader definition of love. The Roman Catholic Church recognizes 8 different saints named Valentine but the most famous one lived in Rome during the reign of Claudius II, around the year 270 AD.

     Legend has it that Claudius II outlawed marriage as a way to encourage men to join his army. Valentine refused to obey this law and was arrested for secretly performing weddings for young couples. While in prison, Valentines kindness and positive attitude helped convert the jailer and his wife to Christianity.

     According to the legend, Valentine also befriended the jailerrsquo;s blind daughter, often writing her notes of encouragement and praying for her. Word of Valentines kindness and compassion reached Claudius II. He offered to release Valentine if the priest would renounce his religion and worship the Roman gods. Valentine not only refused, but he tried to convert Claudius II to Christianity. Claudius II rejected this attempt and condemned Valentine to death.

     As the legend goes, Valentines prayers were answered, and the jailerrsquo;s daughter was healed. On the eve of his execution, Valentine wrote a note assuring this young girl that she was not responsible for his death. He signed the note ldquo;from your Valentine.rdquo;

     As you can see, Valentines story represents many aspects of love. It was his love for God and his commitment to his values that caused Valentine to disobey the law. Valentines respect for romantic love is also included in his disobedience. His positive and loving attitude, even in the midst of crisis, affected the views of others including the jailer and Claudius himself. He demonstrated love for humanity through his kindness to the jailerrsquo;s blind daughter.

  Many around the world are believing that President Obama possesses an enormous quantity of love and that this characteristic, along with respect, tolerance, will be the boon,or bane, of his Presidency.

Move over St Valentine, here comes Obama!

Albert Einstein:

    Gravitation is not responsible for people falling in love.

    How on earth are you ever going to explain in terms of chemistry and physics so important a biological phenomenon as first love?

Alfred Tennyson:

    I hold it true, whatersquo;er befall;

I feel it, when I sorrow most;

lsquo;Tis better to have loved and lost

Than never to have loved at all.

Allan K. Chalmers:

    The Grand essentials of happiness are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for.

Ambrose Bierce:

    Love: a temporary insanity, curable by marriage?????

Amy Bloom:

    Love at first sight is easy to understand; itrsquo;s when two people have been looking at each other for a lifetime that it becomes a miracle.

Amy Tan:

    I am like a falling star who has finally found her place next to another in a lovely constellation, where we will sparkle in the heavens forever.

Anais Nin:

    Love never dies a natural death. It dies because we donrsquo;t know how to replenish its source. It dies of blindness and errors and betrayals. It dies of illness and wounds; it dies of weariness, of witherings, of tarnishings.

Ann Landers:

    If you have love in your life it can make up for a great many things you lack. If you donrsquo;t have it, no matter what else there is, itrsquo;s not enough.

Anne Morrow Lindbergh:

    Him that I love, I wish to be free mdash; even from me.

Antoine de Saint-Exupery:

    Love does not consist of gazing at each other, but in looking together in the same direction.

Barbara De Angelis:

    Love is a choice you make from moment to moment.

Barbara De Angelis:

    Love and kindness are never wasted. They always make a difference. They bless the one who receives them, and they bless you, the giver.

Bayard Rustin:

    When I say I love Eastland, it sounds preposterous mdash; a man who brutalizes people. But you love him or you wouldnrsquo;t be here. Yoursquo;re going to Mississippi to create social change mdash; and you love Eastland in your desire to create conditions which will redeem his children. Loving your enemy is manifest in putting your arms not around the man but around the social situation, to take power from those who misuse it mdash; at which point they can become human too.

Bayard Taylor:

    I love thee, I love but thee

With a love that shall not die

Till the sun grows cold,

And the stars grow oldhellip;

Bertrand Russell:

    Three passions have governed my life:

The longings for love, the search for knowledge,

And unbearable pity for the suffering of [humankind].

    Love brings ecstasy and relieves loneliness.

In the union of love I have seen

In a mystic miniature the prefiguring vision

Of the heavens that saints and poets have imagined.

    With equal passion I have sought knowledge.

I have wished to understand the hearts of [people].

I have wished to know why the stars shine.

    Love and knowledge led upwards to the heavens,

But always pity brought me back to earth;

Cries of pain reverberated in my heart

Of children in famine, of victims tortured

And of old people left helpless.

I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot,

And I too suffer.

    This has been my life; I found it worth living.

        adapted

        Bible:

    Love is patient, love is kind.

It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

It is not rude, it is not self-seeking.

It is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth.

It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails.

I Corinthians 13:4-8

Blaise Pascal:

    The heart has its reasons which reason knows not of.

C.S. Lewis:

    Why love if losing hurts so much? We love to know that we are not alone.

Carl Jung:

    Where love rules, there is no will to power; and where power predominates, there love is lacking. The one is the shadow of the other.

Carter Heyward:

    Love, like truth and beauty, is concrete. Love is not fundamentally a sweet feeling; not, at heart, a matter of sentiment, attachment, or being ldquo;drawn toward.rdquo; Love is active, effective, a matter of making reciprocal and mutually beneficial relation with onersquo;s friends and enemies.

    E.M. Forster:

        Only connect! That was the whole of her sermon. Only connect the prose and the passion, and both will be exalted, and human love will be seen at its height. Live in fragments no longer. Only connecthellip;

        Ecclesiastes:

            For everything there is a season,

And a time for every matter under heaven:

A time to be born, and a time to die;

A time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;

A time to kill, and a time to heal;

A time to break down, and a time to build up;

A time to weep, and a time to laugh;

A time to mourn, and a time to dance;

A time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together;

A time to embrace, And a time to refrain from embracing;

A time to seek, and a time to lose;

A time to keep, and a time to throw away;

A time to tear, and a time to sew;

A time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

A time to love, and a time to hate,

A time for war, and a time for peace.

                Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

        Edna St. Vincent Millay:

            Life is a quest and love a quarrel hellip;

        Edna St. Vincent Millay:

            I love humanity but I hate people.

        Elbert Hubbard:

            The love we give away is the only love we keep.

        Elie Wiesel:

            The opposite of love is not hate, itrsquo;s indifference.

The opposite of art is not ugliness, itrsquo;s indifference.

The opposite of faith is not heresy, itrsquo;s indifference.

And the opposite of life is not death, itrsquo;s indifference.

                (Oct. 1986)

        Elie Wiesel:

            Friendship marks a life even more deeply than love. Love risks degenerating into obsession, friendship is never anything but sharing.

        Elizabeth Barret Browning:

            Whoso loves, believes the impossible.

        Ella Wheeler Wilcox:

            All love that has not friendship for its base,

Is like a mansion built upon the sand.

        Emily Dickinson:

            That Love is all there is,

Is all we know of Love.

        Emily Dickinson:

            Love—is anterior to Life—

Posterior—to Death—

Initial of Creation, and

The Exponent of Earth—

        Emily Dickinson:

            Who has not found the heaven below

Will fail of it above.

Godrsquo;s residence is next to min,

His furniture is love.

        Emma Goldman:

            Free love? As if love is anything but free! Man has bought brains, but all the millions in the world have failed to buy love. Man has subdued bodies, but all the power on earth has been unable to subdue love. Man has conquered whole nations, but all his armies could not conquer love. Man has chained and fettered the spirit, but he has been utterly helpless before love. High on a throne, with all the splendor and pomp his gold can command, man is yet poor and desolate, if love passes him by. And if it stays, the poorest hovel is radiant with warmth, with life and color. Thus love has the magic power to make of a beggar a king. Yes, love is free; it can dwell in no other atmosphere.

        Erich Fromm:

            Infantile love follows the principle: ldquo;I love because I am loved.rdquo;

Mature love follows the principle: ldquo;I am loved because I love.rdquo;

Immature love says: ldquo;I love you because I need you.rdquo;

Mature love says: ldquo;I need you because I love you.rdquo;

        Ernest Becker:

            When we understand that man is the only animal who must create meaning, who must open a wedge into neutral nature, we already understand the essence of love. Love is the problem of an animal who must find life, create a dialogue with nature in order to experience his own being.

        Euripides:

            He is not a lover who does not love forever.

        Felix Adler:

            Love is the expansion of two natures in such fashion that each include the other, each is enriched by the other.

        Francis David:

            We need not think alike to love alike.

        Franklin P. Jones:

            Love doesnrsquo;t make the world go rsquo;round; love is what makes the ride worthwhile.

        Friedrich Nietzsche:

            It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.

        Georg C. Lichtenberg:

            Love is blind, but marriage restores its sight.

        George MacDonald:

            To be trusted is a greater compliment than to be loved.

        George Sand:

            There is only one happiness in life, to love and be loved.

        George Santayana:

            Love is only half the illusion; the lover, but not his love, is deceived.

                The Life of Reason, 1905-1906

        Goethe:

            To be loved for what one is, is the greatest exception. The great majority love in others only what they lend him, their own selves, their version of him.

        H. L. Mencken:

            To be in love is merely to be in a state of perceptual anesthesia mdash; to mistake an ordinary young man for a Greek god or an ordinary young woman for a goddess.

                Prejudices, 1919

        HH the Dalai Lama:

            Responsibility does not only lie with the leaders of our countries or with those who have been appointed or elected to do a particular job. It lies with each of us individually. Peace, for example, starts within each one of us. When we have inner peace, we can be at peace with those around us.

        HH the Dalai Lama:

            When we feel love and kindness toward others, it not only makes others feel loved and cared for, but it helps us also to develop inner happiness and peace.

        Han Suyin [Elizabeth Comber]:

            hellip;love from one being to another can only be that two solitudes come nearer, recognize and protect and comfort each other.

                b. 1917 Chinese writer and physician

        Hazrat Inayat Khan:

            The sage said, ldquo;The best thing is not to hate anyone, only to love. That is the only way out of it. As soon as you have forgiven those whom you hate, you have gotten rid of them. Then you have no reason to hate them; you just forget.

                Spiritual Dimensions of Psychology

        Helen Keller:

            Have you ever been at sea in a dense fog, when it seemed as if a tangible white darkness shut you in and the great ship, tense and anxious, groped her way toward the shore with plummet and sounding-line, and you waited with beating heart for something to happen? I was like that ship before my education began, only I was without compass or sounding line, and no way of knowing how near the harbor was. ldquo;Light! Give me light!rdquo; was the wordless cry of my soul, and the light of love shone on me in that very hour.

        Henri Nouwen:

            Your body needs to be held and to hold, to be touched and to touch. None of these needs is to be despised, denied, or repressed. But you have to keep searching for your bodyrsquo;s deeper need, the need for genuine love. Every time you are able to go beyond the bodyrsquo;s superficial desires for love, you are bringing your body home and moving toward integration and unity.

        Henry David Thoreau:

            Love must be as much a light as it is a flame.

            There is no remedy for love but to love more.

        Henry Wadsworth Longfellow:

            If I am not worth the wooing, I am surely not worth the winning.

        Herman Hesse:

            If I know what love is, it is because of you.

        Hermann Hesse:

            You know quite well, deep within you, that there is only a single magic, a single power, a single salvationhellip;and that is called loving. Well, then, love your suffering. Do not resist it, do not flee from it. It is your aversion that hurts, nothing else.

        Hobbes (of Calvin and hellip;):

            I think we dream so we donrsquo;t have to be apart so long. If wersquo;re in each others dreams, we can be together all the time.

            Tell me whom you love and I will tell you who you are.

            On reflection, one of the things I needed to learn was to allow myself to be loved.

        James Baldwin:

            The face of a lover is an unknown, precisely because it is invested with so much of oneself. It is a mystery, containing, like all mysteries, the possibility of torment.

        James D. Bryden:

        Jane Austen:

            One does not love a place the less for having suffered in it unless it has all been suffering, nothing but suffering.

        Joan Vinge:

            Indifference is the strongest force in the universe. It makes everything it touches meaningless. Love and hate donrsquo;t stand a chance against it.

                The Snow Queen

        John Lennon:

        M. Scott Peck:

            Although the act of nurturing anotherrsquo;s spiritual growth has the effect of nurturing onersquo;s own, a major characteristic of genuine love is that the distinction between oneself and the other is always maintained and preserved.

            Love makes mutes of those who habitually speak most fluently.

        Marcel Proust:

            In real love you want the other personrsquo;s good. In romantic love you want the other person.

            [W]e all need friends with whom we can speak of our deepest concerns, and who do not fear to speak the truth in love to us.

        Mark Twain:

            Love seems the swiftest, but it is the slowest of all growths. No man or woman really knows what perfect love is until they have been married a quarter of a century.

            I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.

        Mary Oliver:

            To live in this world you must be able to do three things: to love what is mortal; to hold it against your bones knowing your own life depends on it; and, when the time comes to let it go, to let it go. Blackwater Woods

            Is it so small a thing

To have enjoyrsquo;d the sun,

To have loved, to have thought, to have donehellip;

        Mitsugi Saotome:

            If you were all alone in the universe with no one to talk to, no one with which to share the beauty of the stars, to laugh with, to touch, what would be your purpose in life? It is other life, it is love, which gives your life meaning. This is harmony. We must discover the joy of each other, the joy of challenge, the joy of growth.

        Mohandas K. Gandhi:

            Hatred ever kills, love never dies. Such is the vast difference between the two. What is obtained by love is retained for all time. What is obtained by hatred proves a burden in reality for it increases hatred.

            Where there is love there is life.

        Molly Haskell:

            But one of the attributes of love, like art, is to bring harmony and order out of chaos, to introduce meaning and affect where before there was none, to give rhythmic variations, highs and lows to a landscape that was previously flat.

        Mother Teresa:

            The hunger for love is much more difficult to remove than the hunger for bread.

        Mother Teresa:

            Let us not be satisfied with just giving money. Money is not enough, money can be got, but they need your hearts to love them. So, spread your love everywhere you go.

        Nathaniel Hawthorne:

            It is to the credit of human nature, that, except where its selfishness is brought into play, it loves more readily than it hates. Hatred, by a gradual and quiet process, will even be transformed to love, unless the change be impeded by a continually new irritation of the original feeling of hostility.

                from The Scarlet Letter

        Norman Lindsay:

            The best love affairs are those we never had.

        Oscar Hammerstein, II:

            Do you love me because Irsquo;m beautiful,

or am I am beautiful because you love me?

        Oscar Wilde:

            Each time that one loves is the only time one has ever loved. Difference of object does not alter singleness of passion. It merely intensifies it. We can have but one great experience at best, and the secret of life is to reproduce that experience as often as possible.

        Pearl S. Buck:

            A good marriage is one which allows for change and growth in the individuals and in the way they express their love.

        Pearl S. Buck:

            The person who tries to live alone will not succeed as a human being. His heart withers if it does not answer another heart. His mind shrinks away if he hears only the echoes of his own thoughts and finds no other inspiration.

        Pearl S. Buck:

            I love people. I love my family, my children . . . but inside myself is a place where I live all alone and thatrsquo;s where you renew your springs that never dry up.

        Rainer Maria Rilke:

            For one human being to love another: that is perhaps the most difficult of our tasks; the ultimate, the last test and proof, the work for which all other work is but preparation.

        Ralph Waldo Emerson:

            Religion is to do right. It is to love, it is to serve, it is to think, it is to be humble.

        Reinhold Niebuhr:

            Nothing worth doing is completed in our lifetime,

Therefore, we are saved by hope.

Nothing true or beautiful or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history;

Therefore, we are saved by faith.

Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone.

Therefore, we are saved by love.

No virtuous act is quite a virtuous from the standpoint of our friend or foe as from our own;

Therefore, we are saved by the final form of love which is forgiveness.

        Robert Frost:

            Earthrsquo;s the right place for love. I donrsquo;t know where itrsquo;s likely to go better.

                Birches

        Robert Fulghum:

            I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge mdash; myth is more potent than history mdash; dreams are more powerful than facts mdash; hope always triumphs over experience mdash; laughter is the cure for grief mdash; love is stronger than death.

        Robert G. Ingersoll:

            Love is the only bow on lifersquo;s dark cloud.

It is the Morning and the Evening Star.

It shines upon the cradle of the babe,

and sheds its radiance upon the quiet tomb.

It is the mother of Art,

inspirer of poet, patriot, and philosopher.

It is the air and light of every heart, builder of every home,

kindler of every fire on every hearth.

It was the first to dream of immortality.

It fills the world with melody,

for Music is the voice of Love.

Love is the magician, the enchanter,

that changes worthless things to joy,

and makes right royal kings and queens of common clay.

It is the perfume of the wondrous flower mdash; the heart

and without that sacred passion, that divine swoon,

we are less than beasts;

but with it, earth is heaven

and we are gods.

            Absence is to love as wind is to fire; it extinguishes the small and kindles the great.

        Rose Walker:

            Have you even been in love? Horrible, isnrsquo;t it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens your heart and it means someone can get inside you and mess you up. You build up all these defenses. You build up this whole armor, for years, so nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid lifehellip;

        Roy Croft:

            I love you

Not only for what you are

But for what I am

When I am with you

                Love (first stanza)

        Rumi:

            Let the lover be disgraceful, crazy, absent-minded.

Someone sober will worry about events going badly.

Let the lover be.

        Rumi:

            Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.

        Rumi:

            Come out of the circle of time

And into the circle of love.

        Saint Francis de Sales:

            You learn to speak by speaking, to study by studying, to run by running, to work by working; and just so, you learn to love by loving. All those who think to learn in any other way deceive themselves.

        Samuel Butler:

            Perhaps; but is it not Tennyson who has said: ldquo;lsquo;Tis better to have loved and lost, than never to have lost at allrdquo;? in The Way of All Flesh

        Simone Weil:

            The love of our neighbor in all its fullness simply means being able to say, ldquo;What are you going through?rdquo;

            Those who love deeply never grow old; they may die of old age, but they die young.

        Song of Solomon:

            This is my beloved and this is my friend.

        Spanish proverb:

            Where there is love, there is pain.

        St. Augustine:

            Better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved at all.

        Søren Kierkegaard:

            Love does not alter the beloved, it alters itself.

        Thomas Merton:

            It is in deep solitude that I find the gentleness with which I can truly love my brothers. The more solitary I am the more affection I have for them…. Solitude and silence teach me to love my brothers for what they are, not for what they say.

        Tom Robbins:

            The bottom line is that (a) people are never perfect, but love can be, (b) that is the one and only way that the mediocre and vile can be transformed, and (c) doing that makes it that. We waste time looking for the perfect lover, instead of creating the perfect love.

                Still Life With Woodpecker

        Truman Capote:

            The true beloveds of this world are in their loverrsquo;s eyes lilacs opening, ship lights, school bells, a landscape, remembered conversations, friends, a childrsquo;s Sunday, lost voices, onersquo;s favorite suit, autumn and all seasons, memory, yes, it being the earth and water of existence, memory.

            Donrsquo;t find love, let love find you. Thatrsquo;s why itrsquo;s

called falling in love, because you donrsquo;t force

yourself to fall, you just fall.

            Lucky is the man who is the first love of a woman,

but luckier is the woman who is the last love of a man.

            It takes a minute to have a crush on someone,

an hour to like someone, and an day to love someonehellip;

but it takes a lifetime to forget someone.

            It breaks your heart to see the one you love is happy

with someone else, but itrsquo;s more painful to know that

the one you love is unhappy with you.

            If love is the answer,

can you please repeat the question?

            Faith makes all things possible.

Love makes them easy.

            I believe that to truly Love, is the ultimate

expression of the will to live. A heart that

truly loves is forever young.

            Love makes life so confusing, but without love

would you really want to live?

            Do you love me because I am beautiful

or am I beautiful because I am loved?

            Love me now, love me never,

but if you love me, love me forever.

            Three things of life that are most valuable -

Love, self-confidence amp; friends.

            To the world you may be just one person,

but to one person you may be the world.

            Love is like heaven, but it can hurt like hell.

            Who do you turn to when the only person

in the world that can stop you from crying,

is exactly the one making you cry?

            He taught me how to love,

but not how to stop.

            Of all forms of caution, caution in love is the most fatal.

            We come to love not by finding a perfect person,

but by learning to see an imperfect person perfectly.

            Many a young lady does not realize just how strong

her love for a young man is until he fails to pass

the approval test with her parents.

Bail out your mind

Making the Mind Matter

There is another aspect to the bail out jargon.

The phenomenal changes occurring are doing so outside of us. We should be astutely aware that these changes are happening outside of us and we have the responsibility to determine how we respond to them.

It is easy to say that we have choiceshellip;but it is difficult to tell someone who has just been laid off, or who has no health insurance, or who has just seen the 401k reduced to rubble, or whose pension is being affected, orhellip;fill in the blanks.

There is a lot coming at us with blinding force and velocity, not only from what is happening at the individual level, but what the pundits and journalists are feeding into our minds, making us become more deeply affected and at a loss for what to do.

This is somewhat like a movie - we can determine if it is a horror movie, a serial docudrama, a thrillerhellip;we can decide what iit is. However, it could just be a movie that we did not pay to see, did not get paid to participate in, but which is occurring despite all of us.

Thus, if we do view the economy as a movie, we can begin to see that we do have choices, and the choices are entirely up to us.

To help us determine how to make these choices Muriellarsquo;s Corner is giving you this gift - one which we hope will guide your inner steering in the direction it should. Thus the bail out we should be concerned with is how do we bail our minds and thoughts away from all the negative, limitating, conversations hovering all around us.

Enjoy the gifthellip;

Iraqi Blacks become visible

A call for support to African-Iraqis as they participate seriously for the first time in elections. 31 January is D-Day for them.

The recent election to highest office in the United States was not uneventfulhellip;given the tsunami of interest and support seen around the worldhellip;

A black man assuming this position has not only stunned the planet, but has mobilized all those underpressed and overlooked to begin to stand tall and to assume their rightful place in their societies.

One of the places where this has happened is in Iraq. Basra has been in the news over these years,but most of what made the airwaves and the punditications was the war and its effects. But, I believe, that nowhere has it been revealed or even acknowledged the diversity (ethnic, yes) of the Iraqis - that there are real black - African-Iraqis - living there.

Below is a report and video from The Guardian on this phenomenon

Black Iraqis make their political debut in provincial polls

Inspired by Obama, persecuted minority hopes for breakthrough in elections

    * Martin Chulov in Basra

* guardian.co.uk, Monday 26 January 2009 16.47 GMT

Black people stand for election in forthcoming Basra polls

In Iraqrsquo;s deep south another American-led revolution is stirring. But this time it is being sparked by popular voice, not bombs.

The countryrsquo;s 1m-plus black citizens have tapped into Obama-mania like few other groups across the Arab world. For them Obamarsquo;s inauguration was the dawn of a civil rights movement that they never had the impetus to strive for.

Black Iraqis will this week stand for the first time as an electoral bloc in provincial polls that will help shape Iraq in its slow transition to full sovereignty and possibly help shake off the stereotype that places them near the top of the heap in a nation of persecuted minorities.

Like the marsh Arabs to the north of their relative stronghold in Basra, black Iraqis are an underclass who find it near impossible to rise above their time-worn status of hard-labourers and peasants. Up to 50% of black Iraqis migrated to the Arabian Peninsula after the birth of Islam 1,500 years ago.

The rest have come steadily in the centuries since, some trafficked as slaves and others lured by broken promises of riches. All have been typecast, ldquo;just as the blacks of America wererdquo;, said Jalal Dhiyab, number two on the electoral list of the Secretary of the Free Movement of Iraqis.

ldquo;We joined this election because we felt we could break the wall surrounding Iraqi society and the climate of fear we have felt for generations,rdquo; he said.

ldquo;Black people have been treated very poorly throughout Iraqi history. The oppression has stopped us from joining many levels of society. It has restricted our education. We have become a social underclass. We are taking part in the new elections to give black Iraqis a new purpose in Iraq.rdquo;

Obamarsquo;s victory was a milestone in the history of democracy throughout the world, said Dhiyab.

ldquo;It is a victory for freedom. He has experienced suffering and seen serious challenges in his life. And yet he has reached the White House where decisions are made that affect all the people in the world. We hope that Obamarsquo;s policy in Iraq differs from Bushrsquo;s policy here. The Bush regime destroyed lives and infrastructure and fractured the whole of Iraqi society.rdquo;

The Free Movement of Iraqis is putting forward eight candidates in the provincial poll, in which 1,272 candidates are standing for 35 seats in the Basra province. Around 30% of the nominated candidates are women.

The polls will be held on 31 January, ahead of national elections later in the year.

Miracles and History in America

Miracles on the Hudson and in the White House

We thought that this coming week, on 20 January, we will see an event never before thought of as possible - the inauguration of the first Black president in the United States. Barack Husein Obama will take the oath of office that day, a day when history will be made, when the predictions of those gone before will come to pass - I have a Dreamhellip;will have been realised.= the Miracle in the White House.

But a miracle was to have been realized as a precursor to the Miracle in the White House - the Miracle on the Hudson, when a plane, not a bird, landed on water and people were saved on wings and prayers, thanks to the skill of the pilots, yes there were two, one seen and one unseen.

The effect of these historical and miraculous moments will forever change the course of the United States, as going forward, young children will no longer have a ceiling to stop them from accomplishing anything, whatever their color. Pilots, presidents, whateverhellip;it is possible in this country.

The narrative is changing in America - the new President will be reaching for dialogue, reaching out so that others can join in the debate whether they voted for him or not, for, as he says, this is our America, and each of us has the right to share and voice our opinions, to disagree without being disagreeable.

One narrative that President Obama will be changing is the narrative on smoking. He has promised to stop smoking when he assumes the presidence. The Last Butt Founder, Mr Philippe Valy is ready to assist him in this momentous task by giving him the First Last Butt Award, an award to the highest office in the land, an award which reminds all of us that no matter what the stature or race or position held, each of us grapples at some time or the other with a challenge. Stopping smoking is the challenge facing the 44th President.

This month on Change the Narrative we are looking into resolutions made in the New Year on Smoking.

President Obama has taken on Parenting big time. So much so that a special session on Meet the Press has been created on challenges and leadership in the African American Community, and the first session was on Parenting.

Muriellarsquo;s Corner has characterized President Obamarsquo;s suggestions during a discussion in February in the presidential campaign when he discussed Parenting.

Here they are

THE OBAMA TEN on Parenting:

President Obama gives some tips for Parents and Parenting when YOUR child comes home from school:

1. Turn off radio/TV/Video games

2. Get some books/reading material in the home - parents must read; children must read

3. Buy a desk or clear a space on the kitchen table for the child to do homework

4.  Help them do homework

5. If necessary call the teacher if you cannot help

6. Get them to bed at an appropriate time, after they have had dinner

7. Keep them off the streets when they do not have to be there

8. Get them breakfast before they leave for school or for them to have at school

9. When you are told that they have misbehaved - do not cuss out the teacher

10. DO SOMETHING TO HELP YOUR CHILD LEARN AND TO HELP YOU LEARN HOW TO PARENT - IN OTHER WORDS, SHOW THEM SOME LOVE

Read more on Muriellarsquo;s Corner For Parents and also see Bill Cosbyrsquo;s Video on Meet the Press, 11 January.

Among the celebrities wanting to quit smoking are Whoopi Goldberg, Cameron Diaz (to stop smoking, start wearing a bra, stop shopping) and none other than President Elect Obama who is making a gigantic effort to stop smoking. He even promised America, on a recent episode of Meet the Press, that he will not smoke in the White House - See Press Release on this

GOD HAS A POSITIVE ANSWER

Let us start believing that we have choice in everything we do, conscious choice. We can choose to do, we can choose to not do; we can choose to decide, we can choose to not decide; we can choose to act, we can choose to not acthellip;..

And every choice has a consequence - our lives today are a function of our choices yesterdayhellip;not of events leading up to how we choose, but the fact that we chose chocolate or vanilla and got the ice-cream we ordered.

Below are some scriptures showing us that we should make every conscious effort to choose the way we would like the outcome to show up, choose consciously.

YOU SAY GOD SAYS BIBLE VERSES

lsquo;Itrsquo;s not worth itrsquo; It will be worth it (Roman 8:28 )

lsquo;I canrsquo;t forgive myselfrsquo;    	I Forgive you   	           (I John 1:9 amp; Romans 8:1)

MY LAST BUTT… is an international association founded in 2008. Its purpose is to provide support to smokers wanting to quit smoking, to raise awareness of the detrimental effects of the cigarette by the means of any artistic event such as concerts, plays, street shows, sculptures, paintings or any other activity, preventive operations with miscellaneous establishments to also increase awareness among young people of the influence of cigarette on our lifestyle, without having to stigmatize, tax or stress the smokers. Many have joined the movement (http://www.myspace.com/mylastbutt), There are associations in the USA and in Europe.

The Board of Directors of the Last Butt Society is committed to providing a new approach to those smokers grappling with giving up smoking, as well as those who stop and start, like President-Elect Obama who admits to falling off the wagon a couple of times. As he said to Tom Brokaw during his interview on Meet the Press on Sunday 7 December 2008, ldquo;I have done a terrible job so far, however, I can assure you that there will be no smoking in the White Houserdquo;.

Change the Narrative, Reach for Dialogue

Muriellarsquo;s Corner is now on Blog Talk Radio with the theme of Change the Narrative - Reach for Dialogue and Create a Better World

Whatever the content of our narrative we should be conscious and cognizant of the effect of our words on our listeners.  This is essentially true of the Electronic Media as we look to them for a honest detail of the news.  What we get most of the times, and this might be due to the 24times;7x365 nature of cable news, is an increasing call to fear, anxiety, tension, conflict, angerhellip;

Say No to Drugs has led to the War on Drugs, there is a War on Poverty or a Fight Against Poverty, a war on HIV/Aids waged 20 years ago - and since these declarations there have been more drugs, more people in poverty, Aids is spreadinghellip; and notwithstanding the War on Terror - established in 2001 after 911, which in turn has given birth to more terror and wars - (more 911s in different capitals, now Mumbai).

This was driven home clearly in the reporting and breaking news on the Mumbai event. What started out as information on what was happening, escalated within days to blaming Pakistan, even though no police/detective work began. See photos below.

Following last weekrsquo;s terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India, thousands took part in a demonstration, some chanting anti-Pakistan slogans.

The fact that many of the youth owned a Pakistani passport was enough to drive anger towards the Pakistani Government, who initially was also shocked at the news of the event and was willing to support India in finding the perpetrators.

Judgment was escalating towards the involvement of Pakistan, so much so that a prank was played on the Pakistani Government through a fake call toPakistan supposedly from India

ldquo;Pakistan went into a state of high alert last weekend after President Asif Ali Zardari received a threatening phone call made by someone who said he was Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

Islamabad, Dec.6 : Pakistan went into a state of lsquo;high alertrsquo; last weekend after President Asif Ali ZardariPranab Mukherjee - received a threatening phone call made by someone who said he was Indian External Affairs Minister Read more

We gather our news from international stalwarts like CNN and BBC radio and TV. Even here the journalists began hypothesing, and concluding categorically, with certitude, that Pakistan must be involved, so much so that some of those being interviewed, like Sree Sreenavasan of Columbia University, asked that some concern be given to judging or inferring that there was involvement of the Pakistani Government.

Change the narrative, reach for dialogue will be the continuing theme for future segments of Muriellarsquo;s Corner on Blog Talk Radio. We will examine narratives/content on health issues, development issues, cultural issues - issues which could be affected negative by the way the story is relayed or developed.

Gold and health

DRINK LIQUID MEDICINAL GOLD

Gold is a very precious metal; an all-natural mineral that is non-toxic and exhibits no interactions with other drugs, and is easily tolerated by the body.

Its healing properties are being rediscovered, as modern scientists and physicians uncover what the ancients seem to have known all along:

Over 5,000 years ago, the Egyptians ingested gold for mental, bodily and spiritual purification. The ancients believed that gold in the body worked by stimulating the life force and raising the level of vibration on all levels.

The Alchemists of Alexandria developed an ldquo;elixirrdquo; made of liquid gold. They believed that gold was a mystical metal that represented the perfection of matter, and that its presence in the body would enliven, rejuvenate, and cure a multitude of diseases as well as restore youth and perfect health.

The Egyptians used gold in dentistry and it is still in favor today as an ideal material for dental work, approximately 13 tons of gold are used each year for crowns, bridges, inlays and dentures. Gold is ideal for these purposes because it is non-toxic, can be shaped easily, and never wears, corrodes or tarnishes.

In medieval Europe, gold-coated pills and ldquo;gold watersrdquo; were extremely popular. Alchemists mixed powdered gold into drinks to ldquo;comfort sore limbs,rdquo; which is one of the earliest references to arthritis.

During the Renaissance, Paracelsus (1493-1541) - who is considered the founder of modern pharmacology - developed many successful medicines from metallic minerals including gold. One of the greatest alchemists/chemists of all time, he founded the school of Iatrochemistry, the chemistry of medicine, which is the forerunner of pharmacology.

In the 1900s, surgeons would often implant a gold piece under the skin near an inflamed joint, such as a knee or elbow. As a result, the pain would often subside or cease altogether.

In China, the restorative properties of gold are still honored in rural villages, where peasants cook their rice with a gold coin to replenish the mineral in their bodies, and fancy Chinese restaurants put 24-karat gold-leaf in their food preparation

.More recently, gold has been medically documented to be highly effective in certain cases of inoperable cancer. Injection of microscopic gold pellets helps retard prostate cancer in men. Gold injections are also very effective in cases of acute arthritis. Women with ovarian cancer are treated with colloidal gold. Brain surgeons use 24 carat gold thread to suture delicate areas of the brain during surgery.

Medicinal Gold in the human diet whether absorbed into the blood stream from jewelry through the skin or infused in sops like Heart of Gold, imbibed like Joulersquo;, or injected through hypodermics by licensed medical practitioners has wonderful nutritional effects on the human system. READ MORE
