Hello (again) everybody. Today is my third-last [if that's even said properly] day at the TIG Toronto office.

It has just began to get to the me that, hey my time at TIG is almost up! Somehow throughout the 8 months of commuting, and working on different projects, the journey is approaching its end.

However despite all of this I am in a very relaxed state. All of my accomplishments and achievements have allowed me to now just take a break, as I get ready to leave on a good note, June 1st.

That sunny, summer-like fall weather of September 30th's afternoon still is stuck in my mind as I visited TIG for the first time. A close knit environment is what I noticed initially, as I opened the door and stepped into the TakingITGlobal Toronto office.

I have been here since October 2008, but I swear it feels like I just started volunteering here last week, hahah

While at TIG I have seen many great people come through: Jessica, Laura, PJ, Lucas, Mai, etc and I am so amazed at how much change there has been to the office yet TIG still remains the same; empowering youth on the local and online level.

As a Panorama Editorial Assistant, I have learned a lot about how to edit, provide feedback to writers amoung other tasks. I believe that this has prepared me for future work in the journalism field. TIG was a great way to start of my work experience in media.

When you think about it TakingITGlobal has staff, interns, volunteers, virtual volunteers who all bring something unique to the table.

The tech team, education program managers, office support everyone who works in the office/team are vital in the sucess of TIG.

Hmmmm, I will continue this thought in the next blog entry I write.. :)

Earth Day 2009!

Hey everyone!

Finally spring has arrived here in my hometown of Toronto!
The first big event happening this spring is Earth Day; taking place next week Wednesday on April 22, 2009.

As I thought to myself about Earth Day, the following thoughts came up:
1) What will I be doing for Earth Day?
2) How can I best show my appreciation for our planet?
3) What kind of actions can I take towards this day as I get older?

And after some 'thinking' time, I came up with the following solutions:
1) On Earth Day I will be participating in my high school's annual cleanup which involves cleaning up our sidewalks, painting our underpasses and planting new plants in our school's parking lot
2) I can best show my appreciation for our planet by making a conscious effort to reuse things whenever I can, accepting less packaging when purchasing products, and using resources such as electricity and water in the appropriate amounts
3)As I get older I would love to participate in larger efforts in Toronto that have to do with Earth Day, and to be able to keep up with my efforts in reducing my carbon footprint :)

The Global Financial Crisis

Hey everyone! Since the upcoming Panorama issue is going to be about the reccession and all of the events surrounding the global economy issues, I figured it would be great if I am able to submit some work for publishing in that issue.

I was brainstorming a couple of thoughts so here goes:

[Where Currency Lays]

Walking along your sidewalk you see a penny,
And think nothing of it.
A man behind you, a poor Tom if you will, trekking closely behind
Grabs it, adding to his collection.

A small business owner glances outside of his store
through an old window wondering if maybe, just maybe
he’ll make it through this economic rollercoaster.

On the other side of town in a glass skyscraper a CEO turns his chair around to face the storm that he sees coming. No one knows how hard this could get but we can all try to cope.

High School Beyond

Now more than halfway through my senior year in high school, I' beginning to wonder...so what next? As I watch the calendar get nearer and nearer to June 2009, I begin to look at the future. So far I have gotten into two of the universities of my choice, and am still waiting to hear from my first choice *fingers crossed for a letter in Early May*. Then upon getting into a university, I'll probably do another internship, leave that and then really get into my career. The entrepreneur in me, says that I should look into starting my own business, while the practical me says that there is just so much you can learn working under somebody else. My mind constantly wanders as these thoughts stick with me.

But, I thought to myself, what about those who don't see such a simple solution?

Using my school life an as example I see many seniors frantically running around trying to make sense of whats so quickly approaching...graduation.

Those who never gave a caring thought towards post-secondary scramble, finding information on programs, internships, apprentice oppourtunities.

When it comes down to it, you have to really sit down and think to yourself "What am I doing after high school"
And thats when I got an email about the launch of TIG's new project: Beyond Grad.

As a volunteer editor, I have looked through many different projects and organizations, but this one particularly stands out. Besides the eye catching graphics and easy navigation, I am really hopeful that this site will become the go-to site for youth to share and connect!

Rewards Achievement

Hmm, so I was walking to school today and decided to get one of those free publications (I think it was the 'Metro' or '24'). Anyway, as I glanced at the cover (a brief coverage of the Golden Globes) it got me thinking: As humans have we devised award shows, trophies, and other means of rewards as a way to show off 'the accomplishers' and to motivate 'the losers' into working harder for the next round?

Think to yourself about a world where achievements were not honoured or even mentioned. What a weird world that would be... =|.

Anyway fellow TIG members, what do you think about rewards and achievements?

Hey everyone,
My name is Chantelle and I currently intern for TakingITGlobal at the Toronto office. I have been contributing to TIG since October 2008 and I've learned so much already!

So far I have been editing submissions from TIG members for Panorama, working on the Weekly Update that gets sent out to our English speaking members, and also approving Global Gallery art.

Alot has been going on at TIG:
1) Youth delegates going to Poznan, Poland in December
2) Global Gallery 'Our Voices, Our Climate' Contest
3) Various Live Chats
and so much more!

I'm so excited to be working an organization like this one, and so if anyone has any questions for me, feel free to ask! =)

Have a great week everyone,
