Cultural Advicer to Nigeria

As an effort to further spread the goodwill message of Nigeria and enlighten people about the cultural heritage of Nigeria, i have carried out a patriotic activity which involved Nigeria in the states.

As an international summer camp counselor at Frost Valley YMCA, all internationals were expected to make arrangement for the Frost Valley Olympix 2008. I stood in as the Cultural Advicer to Nigeria dn had two coaches and more than 70 participants. This camp Olympix was to work in line with the South African Olympic and we all made plans and created cheers that will suit the culture of our dear country.

With a strong patriotic mind and the will to serve my country Nigeria,i taught all my coaches, staffs and participants to cheer in Nigerian native languages. Most of all the cheers and songs we sang were in a strict format with some Nigerian native languages and we all chanted these to show he Nigerian spirit.

At the end of the two day event (Sunday and yesterday Monday) we (Nigeria Team) won the Best Cheer Award because i inculcated the spirit of oneness in my team and made all participants feel like hey were from Nigeria really.

This and more are some of the activities that I am carrying out to strengthen the spirit of Nigeria and teach people more about the values and culture of the people of Nigeria.

It's time for summer, everyone is expecting a great experience and are getting prepared for it. I was selected to represent Nigeria and LEAP Africa in an International Camping Programme in the United States and it's a pretty exciting adventure for me.

I got into New York 2nd of June and stayed in Manhattan for three days. I even visited the United Nation since it was three streets aways from where i was residing. I got a call from my camp director requesting that i report to camp the following day and off i went with the first shortline to Monticello the nest morning.

Frost Valley YMCA is located at Claryville, a town under Sullivan County in New York. As an International Camp Counselor (Nigeria), we are working with young people to build peace and unity amidst them. We serve as role models and try as much as possible to foster a better relationship between the campers from different countries, ethnic group, culture and background.

Camping has been interesting to me and i hope to become a better Nigerian Ambassador too.

I hope for more educative and transformative session on Friday. I want to say that we all should try as much as possible to use what we've learnt to affect the lives of others.

Yesterday was a very hectic day. I had to help my mother collect some materials from Balogun Market in Lagos Island. After getting all the materials and had to do some window shopping, i saw a material that would be better for my new suit.

I quickly dashed into the shop and do the normal Nigerian "pricing". We finally got to a agreement and i had to make payment. The money i had with me was'nt enough and i had to flash some cash from my ATM.

Checked for the nearest ATM and i saw UBA's ATM machine. I punched in my pin code and checked my balance before withdrawning. The machine, after i chose the amount i wanted to withdraw told me my service provider was unavailable. Little do i know that the amount has been deducted from my account and the normal N100.00 service charge.

What do we do to help the banks solve this kind of funny transactions? I finally contacted the customer care department and they tried their best in helping me out.

Inculcating Moral Values

I initiated a change project which is aimed at Inculcating the right Moral Values in youth that are in secondary school. This change project is a Leadership Training that trains them to become Peer Educator in the area of Moral Values/Leadership.

This initiative has been on for since June and I want it to run through the session of the secondary school's calendar. We will complete the first stage of the training on Monday 5th November 2007 and then get to evaluate their change projects that they have to carry out before their graduation. The second stage of the training will come up during their second term of their school's calendar.

We are working hard, we partnered with LEAP Africa, Red Cross and The Sunday Sun Newpaper etc. Since this initiative will run in most secondary schools in my community Ejigbo, Lagos, Nigeria I belief that the morals that dictates the way we live our lifes will be effected. Youths will learn to make a positive decision and act as leaders of today!

THE NIGERIAN POLICE AND NIGERIANS

The slogan of the police being a friend is false. How do you reconcile a situation where a policeman would ambush people returning from work sieze and destroy their identification cards and other belongings including money and then whisk them away to the Panti (state CID) police station and then label them as "Armed Robbers" and "Criminals" and then ask them to bail themselves with a minimum of N30,000? Or a situation where the police will decide inspite of your level of education to write your statement for you or if you are to write your statement, the policeman will dictate what you should write. In effect, you should write what should incriminate you to justify your arrest.

The foregoing happened to one Micheal I. and others in Lagos on Friday the 24th August 2007 precisely 1915hrs at Five star bus stop on oshodi-apapa expressway while waiting to board a bus going to Ejigbo where he lives. Seizure and wilfull destruction of one's ID Card in itself is a criminal offence committed by a said crime fighter.

The authorities concerned, including the Presidency, the IGP and the Commissioners of Police should call their men to order as it is usual for the authorities to deny the wrong doings of their men.

A Sudanese man called Tombe was caught having sex with a GOAT owned by Mr. Alifi at an ungodly hour of the day. He's said to be single and always a friendly person in the neighborhood. He was caught by the owner of the Goat Mr. Alifi.

Mr. Alifi had to report the case to the elders of the ommunty instead of taking it to the Police to handle. The elders gave their judgments and was to be followed by Tombe.

He was asked to pay a Dowry of 150,000 Sudanese Diners equivalent to US$50. Afterward, he'll go home with the goat as his new wife!
