I have this idea, of starting a social design firm.

This comes after the repeated rubbing in of the lsquo;young and buddingrsquo; idea: that yoursquo;re never really going to do the kind of work you want to do unless you start off on your own.


After having seen how things are in the development sector one realises that there is a lot for scope for growth.I remember having this conversation with a friend, Nisha Susan, actually when she had just come back to Bangalore after a Mass communication degree at Commit in Pune, and joined APSA, a group that works with street children in Bangalore; she told me about how she didnrsquo;t see herself working in any other sector,  rdquo;after having you grown up in India, how can you not?rdquo;.I still see the wisdom in her words.


I find myself at varying spurts of energy, dulled sometimes by the deprivation and the poverty, spurred still by the resilience that comes from endurance which I have seen in all the people around me, and spurred some more by a rough idea of how things work in India currently.Itrsquo;s a great highs great lows roller-coaster ride and thatrsquo;s what I can promisehellip; without the sentimentality and romanticism that could cloud our ability to see innovation in this sector.


So, what do we need?

My day:


8:30 (roundabout) : Woke up to flatmates banging the door of our cinder filled kitchen.Bittersweet , bottomless bottomfull feeling.


9:30  stepped out to get meself items for a good  breakfast as well as the New Indian Express.My deluxe breakfast lasted a good hour with the newspaper.All in the kitchen.


11:00 Supervised the maid on washing my clothes.Irsquo;m used to doing this myself and need a machine.Usha,who does my washing and cleaning is an intelligent woman who runs her house and three kids on a pay-packet she makes out of working in some five houses.She also takes out the kachra in our building with her husband.


11:30  Conversation with flat-mates.Annie is a woman who left her home and husband with her child on her shoulder because he brought home another.She works as a house-maid too.She had a love marriage.She said that it wouldnrsquo;t have worked between her husband and her but that she still loves him.


14:30 Namaz.Stopped short by flatmate who is edgy about space.So it was the kitchen again.


15:00 Lunch.Bhajiya and rice with chutney powder.Long drawn meal.Itrsquo;s hot in the kitchen with no fan.Snappy exchanges with Priya over lunch.My flatmates are worse off than I am.My relationship with Priya is the epicenter of lot of my woes against this world these days.


17:00 Sleep.Been a busy work week.


18:00 Namaz, and a two books.


18:30 Aida, whose house I stay in needs a clerical job.Itrsquo;s the thing she does best.Does anyone know of one?


19:00 Some relays of telepathic voice chats: ldquo;Peice of Cake!rdquo;, ldquo;Whore!rdquo;, ldquo;Wersquo;ll see!rdquo;


20:00 Sleep.


21:30 Walk to this blogging destination.

Is my city under siege?


I am harrowed, and I am reacting, but I am not retaliating.

Reflections on work with Apne Aap Womenrsquo;s Collective.Part 1.


I work with a collective called ‘Apne Aap’ and they are an 8-year-old organization looking at rehabilitating and providing sustenance and education to second-generation young women and girls in and around the Red Light District of Kamatipura in Mumbai. I’m really excited to have started work on their documentation and it has been interesting so far.


My first few days started with trying to get perspective over the roles of women. I remember passing the area out of curiosity and then recoiling completely (Ya Allah!) in shock on my taxi seat, being driven around while being feeling aghast moral religious far observer absurd sentiments take me over as I bent lowly while the cab driver ferreted me out.


I’ve been observing the flesh trade for a while now. Women wearing glittering embroidered saris of the sixties sort that my mother has from her dowry, with gaudy sequins walk around alone and engulfed in the inky darkness of the sea-shore, almost gliding, almost singing, almost riding the waves, radiant in their translucent make-up. You couldn’t call them brazen. It’s just their job.


What’s astounding is a newer arrangement I’ve seen with auto drivers who ferry them from their homes to Juhu Tara Road and then the client and the woman are taken elsewhere. Sometimes I hastily presume that the flesh trade is only comprised of women, and I haven’t cast the same eye on the young men that are sometimes vacantly poised on this street.


Sex -Work is a vicious trade and Apne Aap’s work is in trying to prevent younger women in the community from getting absorbed into the trafficking circle.


I have always felt that it’s really easy to ‘have a slur on your name’, and in my work have always resisted the sort of moralism that makes you ‘safe’ from questioning righteous judgement. Sexuality is a burdensome domain that reeks heavily on the ones who defy its neat questions. It’s hard to see the light.

BarCamp Mumbai was good.I certainly enjoyed presenting my work in progress.I expected a more mixed crowd; the participants were largely aspiring tech-entrepreneurs.


I love geekoid and geek-culture.There were free pizzas and coffee and my presentation got hijacked twice by their nitpicking impatience.
