While doing my research i found some stats on this sitehttp://www.globalissues.org/TradeRelated/Facts.asp.
They really helped me with my speech and showed me how serious poverty is.

For the 1.9 billion children from the developing world, there are:

640 million without adequate shelter (1 in 3)
400 million with no access to safe water (1 in 5)
270 million with no access to health services (1 in 7)

10.6 million died in 2003 before they reached the age of 5 (same as children population in France, Germany, Greece and Italy)
1.4 million die each year from lack of access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation

Children out of education worldwide
121 million

There is more facts on this site. This was one of the most valuable sources of information for me.
It helped a lot.

The role of media is to present all aspects of life so that the audience will be aware of all the events that are happening around them. Otherwise, media will lose its credibility as a source of information. This reinforces my point of view that media should present images of poverty even though they may disturb some audiences.

I thik this statement is very true. I have used this in my speech's conclusion.

Some disadvantaged communities don't have clean water. This means the water they use to bathe and the water they drink is dirty and sometimes even toxic. This unclean water causes diseases like aids and other terrible infections. Clean drinking water is an essesntial need for all people. And its so hard to believe that many communities around the world dont have it. This is one of the many things that these poor communties dont have. Not receiving clean water seems like a crime. The media should let viewers know what people are going through. This way they will learn to appreciate what they have. And they could aslo help out. Media influences almost everything.
So if they just took the effort to get this message out, there might be some hope for these people. Then they don't have to suffer with these nasty diseases anymore or the unsanitary conditions.

The media does give us suitable T.V. coverage of global poverty. We usually see disadvantaged people and communities on the news and television shows. People do have a good understanding of it. However, its not good enough. When I asked a person in my class they said poverty means poor people. We'll yes it does, but thats not all. Poverty is all about communities that don't have the essentials for a good life. Things like clean water, health care, and education are just some of the needs of these people. Imagine how you would feel if you didn't have these essentials. It would cause a lot of stress and pain. Thats why its up to the media to make sure these people's messages are heard and taken into consideration. Therefore the media has to do their best to spread this news around and get people thinking. So I don't think the media does a good enough job at showing people these disadvantages. I really think they could do better.

Poverty is a condition in which a person or community is deprived of, and or lacks the essentials for a minimum standard of well-being and life. Since poverty is understood in many senses,[1] these essentials may be material resources such as food, safe drinking water, and shelter, or they may be social resources such as access to information, education, health care, social status, political power[2], or the opportunity to develop meaningful connections with other people in society[3].

What I posted above is a short paragraph from (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_poverty)
I think this gives people a pretty brief and good idea about global poverty. Communties who are deprived of essentials of a good life. I like how they put this and that they state poverty as a condition. It is a condition that many are suffering from. The list of senses poverty could be understood as also helps. Material, and social needs are taken away from these people and communities. The lists help people understand a lot. E.g. Infromation, education, health care. These are things that every decent person deserves. I learnt quite a bit from the above paragraph. The links on this site helped as well. Now my main focus is on how the media connects of all of this.

Right now I have mixed feelings on how the media presents poverty to the public. First I thought the media does a pretty good job in giving out information about disadvantaged people around the world.
You see them on the new and other programs on Tv. They are shown in books and the radio as well. So i was almost convinced that these people are noticed by viewers. However, then I thought about myself. I never gave these poverty programs the time of day. Only after I started this project I started to care.So i dont think people really care to listen to these programs and sources of info the media gives.
I know that it is a very serious and effects a lot of people. Many people around the world are starving and have no home or education. I feel that people should learn about poverty and be concerned about it. A good way this information can get to these people is the media.
Some people think that the media represents poverty well. Others think that the media doesn't show
enough. Tell me your opinion and give me some information about what you think. If you have anything to say post a message. Thank you.
