HIV/AIDS and Young People: the way forward

Young people remain at the centre of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in terms of rates of infection, vulnerability, impact, and potential for change. They have grown up in a world changed by AIDS but many still lack comprehensive and correct knowledge about how to prevent HIV infection. This situation persists even though the world has agreed that young people have the human right to education, information and services that could protect them from harm.

Young people are disproportionately affected in the HIV pandemic: about 40 per cent of new infections worldwide are among youth aged 15 to 24. Every 30 seconds another young person is infected, with young women being more vulnerable.

Young people must face the economic and social impact of HIV/AIDS on families, communities, and nations, and they must be at the centre of prevention actions. Where young people are well informed of HIV risks and prevention strategies, they are changing their behavior in ways that reduces their vulnerability. For example, in several countries, targeted education has led to delayed sexual debut and increased use of condoms resulting in a decrease in HIV prevalence in young people. Yet efforts to increase HIV knowledge among young people remain inadequate.

HIV/AIDS has been a very threatening issue among young people and their future, in the bid to address HIV/AIDS among young people different methodology has been employed by planers, policy makers, etc. IEC development has been one of the best methods identified to address HIV/AIDS among young people. But many will wonder how effective has this method been among young people?

Most of the IEC materials targeting young people have sometimes been unfriendly and have little or not yielded the intended result. Recently as a trainee counseling psychology I have discovered that young people like their freedom, want to exploit, and refuse or hate to be ordered around.

Bearing this nature in mind, most of the IEC Materials produced for young people have fall short of expectation, as they have been viewed from young people perspective as very authoritative (e.g. Do this, don’t do this, and stop this)

I have recently developed a Concept of HIV/AIDS JINGLE targeting young people. That has been tested as been friendly and has the capacity to yield intended results.

Presently, I don’t have the financial power to produce this jingle, hear me! I’M NOT ASKING FOR FUND! I’m willing to give this Concept to any Developmental Agency, Partner and Organization or Individuals to produce but most link me as the developer of the idea.

An estimated 50% of people living with HIV/AIDS are among young people, they became infected from the ages of 15 and 24. Statistics in 2005 reveal that 30% of the 60million people living with HIV/AIDS are young people.
HIV has become one of the greatest challenges facing the world today.

As young people participating in the state, national and international response, we have been able to use different means to draw attention to the issues that are most important. Having identified young people as the most vulnerable group, who are part of the productive age of our society, a youth led coordinated response is needed

The HIV/AIDS epidemic has gone on for far too long because we are not doing all we can to stop it.

By “we” I mean our government, yes but I also mean you and me and everybody in this nation.

Working together, we can do something about this ruthless killer, which is why we are writing to you today. You can help reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS among young people and save our productive age by making a special donation to RIV-NYNETHA for the hosting of the Rivers State Youth HIV/Aids Open Forum December 2007.

In recognition of young people’s responsibility in combating the spread of HIV/AIDS, The Rivers State Chapter of the Youth Network on HIV/AIDS intends to drive a grassroots initiative where young people all over rural and water-logged communities in Rivers State will converge to discuss and strengthen youth participation in HIV/AIDS response and pave the way forward.

GOAL
The goal of the Rivers State Youth HIV/AIDS open forum is to integrate young people in Rivers State into HIV/AIDS State and National response.

Purpose
The purpose of the forum is to provide a platform for young people to reflect, share ideas and take actions to affect change.

Specific Objectives

	To strengthen networking across the state among key community-based actors in the HIV/AIDS response.

	To provide a platform for stake holders to make their commitment to the fight against HIV/AIDS.

	Provide an avenue for sharing best practices, lessons learnt and challenges in youth-focused HIV/AIDS programming in the State.

	Enhance young people’s capacity to make safer decision on their sexuality.

	Strengthen youth participation in the state HIV/AIDS response efforts.

	Device an action plan within a frame work that ensures young people’s access to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support.

	Build consensus on the mechanism for coordinating support and funding for HIV/AIDS programmes targeting young people.

METHODOLOGY

In order to achieve the desired objective, the forum shall be divided into three parts.

1. LIFE-SKILLS SECTION

This section is all about young people learning negotiation skills (NO IS NO) and entrepreneurial skills, sexuality and prevention, human rights, and the relationship between drug abuse and HIV.

2. RAISING AWARENESS

* Paper presentation
* Panel discussion
* Abstract presentation
* Capacity building

3. NETWORKING EXPERIENCE SHARING

•	Project exhibition
•	Web collaborations

Free HIV/AIDS counseling and testing shall be conducted throughout the forum by Rhema Care Partners international and other CSO’S.

The Rivers State Youth HIV/AIDS open forum will span through five days with plenary keynote conversation, roundtable sessions, oral/poster presentations, and capacity building workshops, special panels, awards, rally, entertainment and web collaboration.

As you decide how much you will give to make the forum a reality, think of young people in the rural and water-logged communities who are out of intervention level migrating to the state capital with HIV.

Young people can still be leaders, instead of target!
This is a battle of our life; we hope and pray you will stand with us to fight it.

Yours truly,
you're absolutely wrong,
for if you follow your dream,
you could never lose for long.

Ignore the minor set-backs
that pile up and trouble you,
or you will build a mountain,
out of the stones hurled at you.

The future holds great promise,
your destiny unknown,
but God is always helping,
and you're never alone.

Soar bravely toward your goal.
Let nothing darken the way.

You can change your tomorrow,
if you seek your dream today.

Hope is a thing with feathers
That perishes in the soul
And sings a tune without worlds
And never slops at all

And sweetest in the gale, is heard
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That keeps so many warm

I have heard it in the chilliest land
And on the strangest sea
Yet, never, in extremity
It asks a crumb of me.

closing gender gap

oh! we live in world that is characterize by gender inequality........gender inequality pose great treat to our society.
see one of a result of gender inequality in rivers state of nigeria.

Mrs Amina, wife to the late chief Kelly. married April 2000, with 4 children(3 girls and 1 boy).
Mrs amina and family lived a very rich life.......Worthy of wishing for!
her children, faith, Jennifer, eno and Kelly Jr lived as though the world was threes, there wishes were granted like no man business and without delay....,but all this change when chief Kelly died.
immediately after the funeral right, the immediate family claim every belonging of there brother and son, living Mrs amina and children to live in street and feed from remnants of sympathizers....oh what a shame.

Mrs amina in the shame of been living from grace to grace, vow to make it by all means, no wounder she joined prostitution
however not for long, as she was cadged up with HIV and her three daughters ended up in car accident while returning from a delivery service business.

oh.....left to Mon then, was the only son, Kelly Jr, who vowed to kill his uncle and family when he become a man.....what a world.

gender inequality pose a great treat to our society, as it has become increasing clear around the world that investment in women pay off many-fold, when women are given opportunities for in education, access to resource, and a place at the political table, not only is their equality of life improved, but studies have shown that economies are straightened, health care is enhanced, families and marginalized groups are given attention.
all say yes to equality!!!
