DENVER, Colorado (CNN) -- Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama laid out his credentials to take on and beat Republican candidate John McCain in the fall election.
Sen. Barack Obama accepts his party's nomination for the presidency Thursday night.

~~Obama compared himself to McCain on domestic and foreign policy in an impassioned speech before a cheering crowd at the Democratic National Convention Thursday.

"If John McCain wants to have a debate about who has the temperament, and judgment, to serve as the next commander in chief, that's a debate I'm ready to have," he told supporters at the Invesco Stadium in Denver, Colorado.

Obama was greeted by tens of thousands of cheering supporters chanting "yes we can."

He called upon Americans to help usher in an era of change after eight years of what he called failed policies.

"Change happens because the American people demand it -- because they rise up and insist on new ideas and new leadership, a new politics for a new time," he said.

"This moment, this election, is our chance to keep, in the 21st century, the American promise alive."

He described a humble upbringing by his grandfather, a World War II veteran, and grandmother, who he said worked her way up from the secretarial pool to middle-management. Watch reaction to the speech live on CNN.com

"I don't know what kind of lives John McCain thinks that celebrities lead, but this has been mine," he said. "These are my heroes. Theirs are the stories that shaped me. And it is on their behalf that I intend to win this election and keep our promise alive as president of the United States."

In his weekly television address this week, Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez claimed German Chancellor Angel Merkel belonged to the same type of Christian fascist movement that supported Hitler. Read more about his diatribe and share your thoughts about it......

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez does a weekly radio and television show called, ‘Hello President’. He generally uses the time to rant on and on about whatever it is he wants his people to believe. Today week he was really on a roll. He spent some time informing his subjects listeners that the Columbian government had faked documents they had produced as proof of Chavez’ treachery in providing arms and finances to Columbian rebels. He said it was not true and therefore, as far as he is concerned, it isn’t true. He said it was not true and therefore his people had better believe it isn’t true. Or else.

After he got the whole Columbian rebel fake documents issue settled, he went on to address his latest nemesis, German Chancellor Angela Merkel. He claimed that she had called for other Latin American leaders to keep their distance from the current Venezuelan government. Well. He didn’t like that one bit. Of course, it couldn’t be verified that she had said anything of the sort. That doesn’t matter, of course. What matters is that Chavez can go off on another world leader that he doesn’t like, and there are a whole lot of them. As he was talking about Merkel he said, “Ms. Chancellor, you can go to …”. He stopped himself and then said that since she was a lady he wouldn’t say more. But he did say more. He said Chancellor Merkel belonged to the conservative Christian Democratic Union which he described as “She is from the German right, the same that supported Hitler, that supported fascism, that’s the Chancellor of Germany today”.

Chavez said he might confront Merkel at the summit of Latin American and European leaders this week in Peru. I’m sure she’s shaking in her proverbially boots.

The thing about Chavez, aside from the fact that he’s a petty Marxist dictator himself, is that he likes calling other world leaders names. Unless, of course, its his BFF Fidel Castro (who may or may not be still living). He also likes Lil’ Kim Jong-makes-me-Il, China, Ahma-dinner-jacket and assorted other governments and leaders that similarly repress and oppress their people and stand on the necks of their people to make themselves wealthy.

The world leaders he doesn’t like are many. He notably called President George W. Bush ‘el diablo’ at the U.N. General Assembly in 2006. He called Colombian President Alvaro Uribe a ‘liar’ and said he wasn’t competent to be running the corner store. He called President of Mexico Vicente Fox the ‘lap-dog of the empire.’ Chavez irritated Spanish King Juan Carlos so badly in 2007 that the King said, ‘why don’t you shut up?’ before storming out of a meeting with him (video below).

I’m sure Chavez will make some kind of headlines at the summit of Latin American and European leaders this week regardless of whether or not he decides to confront Merkel on her real or perceived comments. After all, making headlines and insulting world leaders is what he does best.

Chavez links Merkel with Hitler

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Mr Chavez stopped short of telling the German leader to go to hell....
~German Chancellor Angela Merkel has set off on a visit to Latin America, after Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez linked her party to Hitler.

Mr Chavez threatened to confront Ms Merkel on Friday at a summit in Peru of Latin American and European leaders.

His outburst came after Ms Merkel said he did not speak for Latin America and would not affect EU relations.

As well as Peru, the German leader will visit Brazil, Mexico and Columbia.

"She is from the German right," said Mr Chavez. "The same that supported Hitler, that supported fascism. That's the Chancellor of Germany today."

The Venezuelan leader stopped short of telling Ms Merkel to go to hell, saying: "Ms Chancellor, you can go to... because you are a lady, I won't say any more."

Angela Merkel 1 May 2008
Angela Merkel will start her visit to Latin America in Brazil

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso defended the German Chancellor by suggesting Mr Chavez's remarks did nothing to promote friendly relations.

"All declarations against the leaders of Europe, against someone with the personality of Chancellor Merkel, of course they're bad," he said.

Mr Chavez is no stranger to insulting international leaders.

He has called President Bush a "devil" and was told to "shut up" by King Juan Carlos of Spain after calling former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar a "fascist".
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Below is a selection of the most memorable of Mr Chavez's colourful quotations.

THE DEVIL COMES

Chavez at the United Nations
Hugo Chavez used his speech to lash at US influence

Speech Extract
In a dramatic speech to the United Nations in September 2006, Mr Chavez famously described George W Bush as the "Devil".

The Devil is right at home. The Devil, the Devil himself, is right in the house.

And the Devil came here yesterday. Yesterday the Devil came here. Right here. [crosses himself] And it smells of sulphur still today.

Yesterday, ladies and gentlemen, from this rostrum, the president of the United States, the gentleman to whom I refer as the Devil, came here, talking as if he owned the world. Truly. As the owner of the world.

DANGER OR DONKEY?

Mr Bush has long been the focus of Mr Chavez's tirades. In a nationally televised speech in March 2006, the Venezuelan leader was not short of ways to described the US president:

You are ignoramus, you are a burro, Mr Danger... or to say it to you in my bad English: [switching languages] You are a donkey, Mr Danger. You are a donkey, Mr George W Bush.

[Returning to Spanish] You are a coward, a killer, a [perpetrator of] genocide, an alcoholic, a drunk, a liar, an immoral person, Mr Danger. You are the worst, Mr Danger. The worst of this planet... A psychologically sick man, I know it.

DON'T MESS WITH ME, LITTLE GIRL

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
Condoleezza Rice had described Venezuela as a menace
Mr Chavez has referred to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as "little girl" on a number of occasions.

In February 2006, Ms Rice described Venezuela as a menace to regional democracy.

She spoke of an "inoculation strategy" against a country she called a "sidekick" of Iran.

During his weekly Sunday broadcast, Mr Chavez replied with a warning to Ms Rice:

Remember, little girl, I'm like the thorn tree that flowers on the plain. I waft my scent to passers-by and prick he who shakes me. Don't mess with me, Condoleezza. Don't mess with me, girl.

He blew a screen kiss to Ms Rice and jokingly referred to her as "Condolence."

IMPERIALIST PAWN

Tony Blair
Tony Blair was accused of not having an morals
The former British Prime Minister Tony Blair also came in for verbal abuse. In 2006, Mr Blair urged Venezuela to abide by the rules of the international community. Mr Chavez replied that Mr Blair had flouted those very rules by invading Iraq.

Don't be shameless, Mr Blair. Don't be immoral, Mr Blair. You are one of those who have no morals. You are not one who has the right to criticise anyone about the rules of the international community.

You are an imperialist pawn who attempts to curry favour with Danger Bush-Hitler, the number one mass murderer and assassin there is on the planet.

Go straight to hell, Mr Blair.

Chavez rejects 'attack' by Blair

THE NEW HOLOCAUST

Also in 2006, Mr Chavez warned that his country would most likely sever links with Israel in protest at its military offensive in Lebanon.

He said he had "no interest" in maintaining relations with Israel, which he has accused of committing genocide.

Israel has gone mad. It's attacking, doing the same thing to the Palestinian and Lebanese people that it has criticised - and with reason - [in the case of] the Holocaust. But this is a new Holocaust.

Venezuela 'to sever Israel ties'

SAD, SO SAD

Mr Chavez has verbally blasted his neighbours on a number of occasions. In 2005, he described his then Mexican counterpart, Vicente Fox, as a puppy dog for United States imperialism.

Mr Chavez said Mr Fox had, as he put it, been left bleeding by a recent Summit of the Americas.

It makes one sad to see the sell-out of President Fox, really it makes one sad.

How sad that the president of a people like the Mexicans lets himself become the puppy dog of the empire.

YET ANOTHER 'IDIOT'

Earlier this year, Mr Chavez called on the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Jose Miguel Insulza, to resign after he condemned the Venezuelan government's decision not to renew a private TV station's licence.

Dr Insulza is quite an idiot, a true idiot.

The insipid Dr Insulza should resign from the secretariat of the OAS for daring to play that role.

IN PRAISE OF MUGABE

Robert Mugabe
President Chavez praised Robert Mugabe as a "freedom fighter"
At times, Mr Chavez has riled the international community not with his verbal abuse, but with his praise of controversial heads of state.

In 2004, he praised Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe as a "freedom fighter".

I give you a replica of liberator Simon Bolivar's sword. For you who, like Bolivar, took up arms to liberate your people.

For you who, like Bolivar, are and will always be a true freedom fighter. [Mugabe] continues, alongside his people, to confront the pretensions of new imperialists.

Mr Mugabe, who was in Venezuela for a summit of the G-15 group of developing nations, smiled as he unsheathed the sword and swung it about.

HALLOWEEN

In 2005, Mr Chavez issued an attack on Halloween, telling his countrymen that it had no place in Venezuelan society.

He used his weekly TV and radio broadcast to caution that the observance is strictly a "gringa," or North American custom. He described it as:

Terrorism, putting fear into other nations, putting fear into their own people.

Families go and begin to disguise their children as witches. This is contrary to our way.

When it comes to finding out what’s really going on behind the scenes in politics … who ya gonna call ….snoop dogg smoking....Ofcourse this is purely for amusement coz' boy did it crack me up...~:)
Snoop Dogg Smokin’.....Snoop Dogg, of course ha ha ha ha ........!!!!

The democrats have been tearing themselves apart with racial issues, gender issues and just plain nastiness. Just when you think the party is irrevocably broken the Snoop Savior steps forward to offer words of wisdom to help begin healing the rifts between the various factions of the party of inclusion.

Snoop Dogg sat down with the Guardian, admired himself in the mirror wearing thousands of dollars worth of gold and diamonds and proceeded to explain how the system, you know, the government, has kept black people down. He hadn’t heard of Barack Obama’s race speech, but when the person interviewing him told him about it he agreed with it. I like my men well read like that.

Snoop Dogg explained how the KKK is one of Obama’s biggest supporters. You know, one guy knows another guy who knows another guy. Wait, I might have left out a guy …. weren’t there any girls in that line of people knowing other people? I got confused. He also admires Louis Farrakhan, but doesn’t see that as a problem for racial relations between blacks and Jews. He says its the government that has created a rift between blacks and Jews. According to him, if the government hadn’t put a wedge between blacks and Jews the Jews would be telling blacks how to make money and keep it in the family. I think he was actually serious when he said that.

I admit I took some liberties with quoting Snoop. What he actually said was more like … bleep *#$#@ bleep KKK *$#@# Obama *@#**$@ money @#@$^Y%#@ gobment *#$(#@# Louis Farrakhan bleep Jews *#@#$@ money *#@@*@#*$# house *#*@. That’s pretty much an exact quote.

Fo shizzle~

Funny Funny Stuff!!!

Sorry guys i haven't been around so am making it up to you all with this funny article LOL and hope you all enjoy it as i did, talk soon all~:)))

India has higher levels of malnourished children than Sub-Saharan Africa, despite the Asian giant having more funds and better infrastructure to tackle the problem, the U.N. Children's Fund (UNICEF) said on Wednesday.

A recent survey by the Indian health ministry, backed by UNICEF, has found that almost 46 percent of children under the age of three are undernourished. About 35 percent of children in Sub-Saharan Africa region are malnourished.

"In terms of the under-nutrition levels, certainly India is at a much higher level than the average Sub-Saharan African country," Werner Schultink, chief of child development and nutrition for UNICEF in India, told a news conference.
Sushmita Sen and Ashley Judd work for AIDS...
By Subhash K. Jha, February 19, 2007 - 06:45 IST (Indiafm.com)

In the middle of next month, Sushmita Sen has a very special rendezvous with the sex workers of Mumbai. Hollywood actress Ashley Judd is coming to town. The two well known stars will join hands to create AIDS awareness in Mumbai's most thickly populated red-light area.

Says Sushmita, "Look at the work that Ashley has done for AIDS and other causes. It makes me feel so small. Acting is all very fine. But real life is far more important. A lot of us celebrities lose touch with our basic purpose, namely to use our names to further causes and issues that make a difference to underprivileged lives. Unfortunately a lot of times our names and funds get exploited in the wrong hands."

Such experiences aren't going to deter Sushmita from reaching out whenever she can. In fact, on Sunday February 18, she headed for St Catherine's Home in Andheri to spend the day with special HIV-infected children.

"Ideally I wouldn't have wanted cameras to follow me there. But then I realize the whole purpose of such interactions is to create awareness about people who aren't as happily placed in life as me or my daughter Renee, hence the absolutely invaluable role of the media."

Renee, in fact accompanied her mom to the Orphanage. "Between the two of us I don't know who's more excited. Both mother and daughter had been waiting for this Sunday. I didn't go there to make the kids feel better. The whole idea is to make myself feel better. I really need this brush with reality to keep me grounded and to reassure me about the quality of my life. "

The day with the children at St Catherine's was meticulously chalked out for Sushmita and Renee. "There was a movie screening, gifts including dolls and yes, lots and lots of chocolates. Believe me, there's nothing kids enjoy more than chocolates."
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

BRAVO TO THESE VERY BEAUTIFUL AND WONDERFUL ACTRESSES IN MAKING A DIFFERENCE AND MAY THEIR FUTURES BE BRIGHT AND BLESSED WITH PLENTY AS WELL~:)

LOTS OF LOVE~
Malnutrition rates among Indian children remain one of the highest in the world, and a massive programme to improve health and nutrition has failed to make a serious dent, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Tuesday.

Some 50 million children aged below six are covered under the 45 billion rupees ($1 billion) Integrated Child Development Services scheme, but it has been poorly implemented, Singh said in a letter to state chief ministers after an adverse health ministry report said.

Monday, January 15, 2007

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - "Babel" won best drama and "Dream girls" was named best musical or comedy at Monday's Golden Globes, establishing them as potential front-runners for a showdown at the Academy Awards.
"I swear I have my papers in order, governor, I swear," "Babel" director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu of Mexico joked after California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger presented the best drama prize for the sweeping ensemble drama that takes place on three continents. Inarritu's wisecrack was a highlight of an otherwise ho-hum Globes ceremony, a show that failed to live up to its reputation as a freewheeling Hollywood soiree where stars sometimes cut loose with amusing antics.

The Globes for best dramatic performances were awarded for renditions of two wildly different heads of state: Helen Mirren won best actress as Britain's priggish monarch Elizabeth II in "The Queen," while Forest Whitaker took best actor as magnetic but savage Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in "The Last King of Scotland."
Mirren noted that at age 25 in 1952, Elizabeth "walked into literally the role of a lifetime, and I honestly think this award belongs to her, because I think you fell in love with her, not with me."
Both Mirren and Whitaker have been regarded as Oscar front-runners since their films debuted last fall.
Mirren also won the Globe for best actress in a TV movie or miniseries as the current monarch's namesake of centuries ago in "Elizabeth I."

The crowd-pleasing musical "Dreamgirls" also won acting honors for Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson, its three prizes possibly positioning it as the nominal favorite heading toward the Oscars.
"Babel," a tale of families around the globe linked by tragic events in the African desert, won only best drama, leaving its Oscar prospects somewhat up in the air. Other dramas it beat, including the crime saga "The Departed" and "The Queen," still could challenge for the top Oscar.

Murphy, won a major Hollywood honor after a 25-year career in which his fast-talking comic persona made him a superstar.
"Wow. I'll be damned," said Murphy, who plays a slick soul singer struggling to change with the times and find new relevance as the Motown music scene evolves through the 1960s and '70s.
"People don't come to me with supporting roles," Murphy said backstage. "The reason I responded to this was that it was a great role. I've always been open to it; it just never came to me."
Hudson rose to fame barely two years ago on "American Idol" on the strength of her powerhouse voice, which she uses to great effect in "Dreamgirls," a film that also shows her remarkable acting range, from brassy comedy to heartbreaking pathos as a soaring vocalist in a Supremes-like singing group.
"I had always dreamed but I never ever dreamed this big. This goes far beyond anything I could have ever imagined," said Hudson, who dedicated her award to the late Florence Ballard, one of the singers from the Supremes on whom her "Dreamgirls" character was based.
After a decades-long drought in which musicals were virtually absent from Hollywood's lineup, "Dreamgirls" is the third song-and-dance flick to click with audiences in the last five years.

"Moulin Rouge" scored a best-picture Oscar nomination for 2001, while "Chicago" won best picture for 2003, a feat "Dream girls" aims to emulate.
Sacha Baron Cohen received the Globe for best actor in a movie musical or comedy for his raucous satire "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan."
In colorful anatomical language, Cohen thanked co-star Kenneth Davitian for a naked-wrestling scene in which the heavyset hairy actor rolls around on top of Cohen, who has to breathe the fetid air from his buttocks.
"Kenneth, if it was not for that rancid bubble, I would not be here today," Cohen said.

Meryl Streep won her sixth Golden Globe, this one as best actress in a musical or comedy for "The Devil Wears Prada," in which she plays the boss from hell at a top fashion magazine.
"I think I've worked with everybody in the room," joked Streep, one of Hollywood's winningest actresses during awards season. "It makes you want to cry with gratitude. Until next year."

The best director prize went to Martin Scorsese for the mob tale "The Departed," the second Globe for the filmmaker, boosting his prospects to finally win an Oscar after five nominations, all losses.
American director Clint Eastwood's Japanese-language World War II saga "Letters From Iwo Jima" won the honor for foreign-language film, a prize usually reserved for movies from outside the United States.
Backstage, Eastwood joked, "Now that I'm a foreign director, I've got to learn some languages."

The talking-auto comedy "Cars" took the first-ever Golden Globe for animated film, a category added because of the rush of cartoon flicks Hollywood now churns out.
"Animation is awesome everybody. It's my life. I've lived in it. It's so exciting to have our own category," said "Cars" director John Lasseter, the innovative director of the "Toy Story" movies who pioneered the current computer-animation craze.

"The Queen" won the movie screenplay honor for Peter Morgan.
Warren Beatty received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement.
"The truth is I haven't made an awful lot of movies, in fact," Beatty said, joking about the busy schedules of other older actors and filmmakers such as Eastwood and Jack Nicholson. "Something like this is enough really for a guy to go out and make another movie."
As Hollywood's second-biggest film honors, the Globes are something of a dress rehearsal for the Oscars, whose nominations come out Jan. 23. The Oscar ceremony will be on Feb. 25.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association that presents the Globes has roughly 85 members, while about 5,800 film professionals are eligible to vote for the Oscars.
Yet the group has a strong history of forecasting eventual Academy Awards winners and providing momentum for certain movies and stars as Oscar voters begin to cast their ballots.
Such Globe best-picture winners as "Shakespeare in Love," "American Beauty," "Gladiator" and "Chicago" went on to win the same prize at the Oscars. Globe voters were off target the past two years, anointing 2004's "The Aviator" as best drama, a prize that went to "Million Dollar Baby" at the Oscars, and 2005's "Brokeback Mountain," which lost to "Crash" come Oscar night.
But all four of 2005's acting recipients at the Oscars - Philip Seymour Hoffman, Reese Witherspoon, George Clooney and Rachel Weisz - also won Golden Globes.

Nominations for the Oscars closed Saturday, so the outcome of the Globes cannot affect who gets nominated.
Uganda LRA to go home, truce in jeopardy
January 15, 2007 + Source: Reuters

Ugandan Lord's Resistance Army rebels said on Monday they want to leave assembly areas in south Sudan and head back to Uganda in a move the army warned would restart a vicious 20-year war.

"We are unwelcome in Sudan so they have to go back to Uganda," LRA spokesman Obonyo Olweny told Reuters by telephone from Nairobi. "We foresee that is the only logical option."

But army spokesman Major Felix Kulayigye said the LRA would be attacked if they tried to cross back into Uganda.

"We shall hit them," he said. "Any attempt to come back to northern Uganda would be taken as a resumption of war."

Aid agencies fear the LRA -- one of Africa's most feared rebel groups -- could wreak havoc on a population traumatised by war if they went back to Uganda. LRA fighters are notorious for killing civilians, mutilating victims and abducting children.

A landmark truce signed in August had raised hopes of an end to a two-decade civil war that has killed tens of thousands and displaced 1.7 million.

The truce renewed in November gave the rebels until the end of January to gather in two places in southern Sudan -- on the borders of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, near LRA leaders' jungle hideouts.

The LRA's comments came days after they said they would not resume talks in the south Sudanese capital, Juba, because of concerns for their security after Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir vowed to "get rid of the LRA from Sudan."

The stop-start peace process has faltered in recent months, with both sides accusing each other of violations and the LRA accusing mediators in south Sudan's government of failing to stop the Ugandan army attacking them in Sudan.

FIREPOWER

LRA spokesman Olweny said the group east of the Nile who were supposed to meet near the Uganda border would probably go back to Uganda.

"They know they can't stop us going back. If necessary we shall use our firepower," Olweny said.

But he added the LRA high command had not yet issued a final order sending the fighters back. LRA commanders were unavailable for comment.

The new U.N. envoy for Uganda's conflict, former Mozambican president Joaquim Chissano, left Uganda for Juba on Monday to attend the planned resumption of talks.

Riek Machar, the chief mediator, on Monday said he hoped the talks could be restarted.

"The stage that they have reached is very advanced; we are bound to lose out if they interrupt the talks. There is no other venue," Machar told Reuters in Juba.

But Olweny said the LRA would not join talks in Juba.

Many Ugandans fear the LRA will never make peace unless the International Criminal Court revokes indictments for war crimes against their top five leaders. (Reporting by Skye Wheeler in Juba)

Saturday, January 13, 2007

~LONDON - Johnny Depp is planning a film about a former Russian security agent whose poisoning in London has touched off an international mystery, according to the trade magazine Variety - one of three possible Hollywood projects about the case.
One of the other projects, involving the director Michael Mann, came after Columbia Pictures agreed to pay $1.5 million for the film rights to a book about the former Russian agent, Alexander Litvinenko, being co-written by his widow and a close friend, the report said.
Warner Bros., which was outbid for that book, acquired the rights to a book by Alan Cowell, a New York Times reporter, which is expected to be published next year by Doubleday, Variety said. Depp's production company, Infinitum Nihil, will produce the film and the actor could star in it.

~Mann is known for his crime sagas such as "Collateral," "Heat" and "Miami Vice," while Depp often takes on eccentric character roles in films such as "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Finding Neverland" and "Edward Scissorhands."
The report said Columbia envisions an espionage thriller "exploring the collision between the deep rooted Russian power structure enforced by the KGB ... and the new wave of wild west capitalism" that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union, Variety said. The book that will serve as the movie's main source is expected to be published in May by Simon Schuster's Free Press imprint, the report said.

~Braun Entertainment Group, based in Beverly Hills, Calif., said Saturday it had bought an option on film rights for a third potential project - based on Litvinenko's own book "Blowing Up Russia: Terror from Within."
Braun - which previously produced for "Freedom Road," a movie starring Muhammad Ali, said it was in talks with Litvinenko's widow, Marina, for its own project.
The former security agent's book was published in 2004 with financial support from the self-exiled Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky and alleged the Russian Federal Security Service, or FSB - an agency that replaced the KGB - was behind bombings at Russian apartment buildings in 1999 that killed more than 300 people. The Kremlin blamed the attacks on Chechen separatists.
An updated version of the book will be released in Britain next week, the London publishing house Gibson Square said.
Litvinenko fled to Britain, was granted asylum and became a Kremlin critic in exile. The former FSB agent died in November, several weeks after falling ill with what was later determined to be poisoning by the rare radioactive isotope polonium-210.
Before his death, he said he fell ill after meeting in London with an Italian security expert to discuss possible suspects in the killing of the Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya a month earlier. In her coverage of Chechnya, Politkovskaya was highly critical of alleged human rights violations by Russian forces and by Kremlin-backed Chechen officials.

~Litvinenko blamed the Kremlin for his poisoning. Russian officials have denied that allegation. British and Russian authorities continue to investigate his death.
Measuring global poverty: India on 20 cents a day
December 26, 2006 + Read Full Article

Using widely quoted World Bank numbers on GDP, this conversion factor for a country like India (2005) can be computed to be approximately 5.3. This means that $1.08 a day in India should effectively imply a purchasing power of about 20 cents a day to an American – or indeed anyone – unacquainted with the nuances of PPP calculations. However, given how the numbers are quoted everywhere, the dominant impression that is conveyed is that the poor are living on less than $1 or $2 a day when, in fact, it would be enormously more accurate, as far as everyday English is concerned, to say that the poor are living on less than $0.20 or $0.40 a day. The reason why this is not done is obvious: it would give an even more alarming picture of the scale and depth of poverty across this enormously wealthy world. Most decent people are shocked enough by the understated numbers in the form they are widely quoted. More reality would numb and paralyse even the grittiest of activists. “Humanity,” T S Eliot wrote, “cannot bear much reality.” He had the privileged in mind.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, whose recent release "Don - The Chase Begins" did good business in the Gulf region, will be honoured for his outstanding contribution to cinema at the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) starting Dec 10-17.

Shah Rukh will be honoured at the Salutes programme of DIFF, which is a retrospective tribute celebrating the work of distinguished filmmakers from Asia, the Arab world and Hollywood.

Along with the Indian actor, Oscar winning director Oliver Stone and Syrian filmmaker Nabil el-Maleh would also be honoured at the week-long festival, reports from gulfnews.com continued.....

IT'S SHOWTIME!!!

The Dubai International Film Festival is back - and it's bigger and better than ever before. Now in its third year, the organisers of DIFF have pulled out all the stops to bring the best of world cinema directly to our door.

With 115 films from 47 countries being screened during the next seven days, there is no better time to catch up on the movies making waves across the globe.

Launching the jam-packed line-up tonight is the gala screening of Emilio Estevez's Bobby featuring a star-studded cast, including Laurence Fishburne, who is here especially for the occasion.

Equally anticipated is this year's Palme d'Or winner at Cannes, The Wind That Shakes The Barley, while younger viewers are in for a treat with the Middle East premiere of Charlotte's Web.

Yes, there'll be the big ones — Babel starring Brad Pitt and the eagerly awaited Kabul Express by Kabir Khan — but don't miss out on the wealth of talent away from the mainstream.

Must see

Death of a President is a must-see in the Café Europe section while Ahlaam (Dreams), set in Baghdad, is gathering worthy acclaim for its gritty insight into the broken lives of three war-hit Iraqis in 2003.

Celebrating the emerging talent of filmmakers in the region, the inaugural Muhr Awards for Excellence in Arab Cinema at this year's DIFF have attracted 30 movies competing for Dh1.2 million in prize money.

Among them is the French/Moroccan entry Indigènes (Days of Glory) which saw its five leading cast members sharing the Best Actor award at Cannes in May.

In addition to the plethora of quality screenings, the Festival will for the first time pay tribute to three great lights in the world of cinema.

Sen. Obama Encouraged to Seek Presidency

Monday, December 11, 2006

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Sen. Barack Obama says he may have to overcome questions about his inexperience, stereotypes about his race and even a middle name that reminds Americans of Iraq's former dictator.
Despite all that, the Illinois Democrat received plenty of encouragement to enter the presidential race during an initial trip to this pivotal campaign state.

Barack Hussein Obama drew the kind of political frenzy that is commonplace in New Hampshire in the final month before the nation's first presidential primary.
In this case, it happened more than a year in advance for a man who hasn't even decided whether he's running.
Obama said he is still "running things through the traps" as he considers whether to join a field of Democrats that's expected to include front-runner Sen. Hillary Clinton and several other more experienced political hands.
He said his family is a major concern because he has two young daughters. Also, he doesn't want to run just because the timing is right politically - he wants to feel he has something important to offer.
"This is an office you can't run for just on the basis of ambition," Obama said. His advisers said he would consider his choice over the holidays, after his annual Christmas trip to his native Hawaii to visit his grandmother.

He got encouragement everywhere he went in New Hampshire. He drew 1,500 Democrats to a state Democratic Party fundraiser and several hundred more at a book signing in Portsmouth. Organizers of both events had to turn away many others.
State party officials said 150 members of the media signed up to cover Obama's speech, representing news organizations as far off as Australia and Japan. A large media contingent crowded into a Portsmouth coffee shop with the senator and knocked into tables as he tried to shake hands with the customers.

History teacher and Democrat Mark Bingham of Alton met Obama and said that despite his inexperience, he could rank among presidents named Lincoln and Kennedy. "It's good to see politics going in another direction," Bingham told the senator.
Gov. John Lynch joked that the Rolling Stones were originally the headliners at the state party fundraiser where the $25 tickets quickly sold out. "But we canceled them when we realized Senator Obama would sell more tickets," Lynch said.
As he took the stage, supporters handed Obama a petition signed by 12,000 people across the country encouraging him to run, said Todd Webster, who started the RunObama.com Web site.
Obama recognized there has been "a little fuss" over his possible candidacy, but said he thinks the excitement reflects voters' desire for a new, positive direction in politics that is not about him as an individual.
"I am suspicious of hype," Obama told reporters. "The fact that my 15 minutes of fame has extended a little longer than 15 minutes is somewhat surprising to me and completely baffling to my wife."
Obama's newness could be one of his biggest liabilities - he's served just two years in the Senate after seven years in the Illinois Legislature. But Obama tried to turn his inexperience into an asset compared with other candidates who have been governing for much longer, although he didn't mention any rivals by name.
He said he thought Americans would look past his name and his black skin and judge him on his merits once they got to know more about him.

Clinton, D-N.Y., has not yet begun campaigning in New Hampshire. But she brought one of the state's prominent Democrats - Terry Schumacher, who worked on both her husband's presidential campaigns - to her Washington home Sunday night for dinner. She also made several calls to other state activists this week to sound out her presidential prospects.

Several other potential candidates have been making trips to New Hampshire for the last year and a half. Among the most frequent visitors is Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh, who filled a small room at a Manchester conference center Friday night but wasn't near the draw as Obama on his first trip. Anticipating the inevitable comparison to their visits on the same weekend, Bayh's aides joked that 1,000 more people were in an overflow room.
Bayh said he wasn't intimidated by the Obama mania, as he talked to voters one-on-one. "I'm doing the things that matter in New Hampshire," Bayh said.

Because of their pivotal role, New Hampshire voters are accustomed to individual attention from presidential candidates. Obama tried to accommodate them despite the large turnout, staying for over an hour after his speech ending by signing a book for every person who wanted one.
He also chartered an $11,000 flight to Chicago late Sunday night so he could greet attendees after his speech without having to worry about catching a plane.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

SENATOR, KENYA AS A COUNTRY AND AFRICA IN GENERAL SUPPORTS YOU…SO GO FOR IT BECAUSE YOU ARE MOST LIKELY TO WIN. I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE AMERICA ONE-DAY LED BY A PRESIDENT OF AFRICAN DECENT.
IT’S INDEED REFRESHING TO SEE AMERICAN POLITICS TAKING ON A DIFFERENT DIRECTION!!

Why viewing 'Don' 2nd time over is a much more interesting experience
<img src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/55/Don2006.jpg/414px-Don2006.jpg"

Posted on November 6, 2006 - 09:25 IST…
By Joginder Tuteja

It has been more than a fortnight since 'Don' has released and by now it is crystal clear that the film is a success. How BIG is the success actually would be ascertained in another fortnight or so but the fact remains that King Khan has struck again....and in style - pun intended! This success is sweeter than many other blockbuster hits this year for multiple reasons:

a) Comparisons with Amitabh Bachchan's 'Don' were inevitable b) Detractors of Shahrukh Khan were hell bent on calling KANK as a failure, at least amongst the audience if not the box office performance wise, and for them one wrong move [read Don] by Khan was a reason to hit the final nail in the coffin. c) It was a twin edged sword to remake 'Don'. Make it exactly the way it is and daggers would have been out to actually question the very essence of remaking the film. Alternatively do something different and there were fears of brickbats that would be thrown to question the reasons behind changes to a classic.

But as we can say now, "Don ki kabr khodna mushkil hi nahi, namumkin hai"!

This is because Farhan Akhtar indeed succeeded when it came to point c) which made the other two just follow suit. Apart from SRK's act, if there is something that deserves fill marks, it indeed has to be Farhan's writing, especially in the second half. This is where the entire fun lies and you realize it more when you watch the film second time.

Yes, you read it right ~the second time!

Because once you know the film's plot and the double bill of twists that come [first in the interval and then the climax], you know what Farhan was up to. He drove the audience to a point where they felt 'so what!' and then suddenly came up with a master-move that left the audience [well, most of it] truly and positively stunned!

WARNING: There are spoilers ahead for those who haven't watched 'Don' still!

Ok, so first half of the film was going good, in fact quite entertaining. Yes, we know that this is about Don and ACP DeSilva. We realize that the film is high-tech, what with cool gadgets, golf courses, derbies, fast cars and the likes. We are given some pleasant moments with new sequences such as those featuring Chunkey Pandey! We also like the fact that the film takes a different terrain altogether with a plot revolving around fallout of International gang lords and stuff alike. Yes, it is 'masala fare' with a contemporary dose and it is fun as guided by the narrative.

The intermission point brings on a twist with DeSilva turning out to be Vardhan, a drug lord who wanted to rebuild the empire. Hmmm, fine, fair enough. The twist is good and is rather stylishly treated [reminding one of Rajiv Rai and Sanjay Gupta films] but then it was not 100% unexpected. There was always a 25% chance of something like that happening, especially with an expectation of at least one twist in the tale by Farhan Akhtar.

So what next? This is what makes one wonder with the mystery behind the plot out. With Farhan's version of 'Don' meeting the point where Chandra Barot's 'Don' ended, one looks forward to what next is in the storyline. It does seem to wonder that Farhan has actually made the sequel to the original in his remake version and one is reasonably entertained till the film's end approaches.

And here comes the mother of all twists. Something which was completely unexpected. Something that was not seen in any Hindi movie as far as one can remember. Something that made one start looking at 'Don' in a different manner altogether.

And why not? After all Don turned out to be a man who is the biggest double crosser of all. A man who fooled the world (and the audience) that he was Vijay when he had actually committed his look-alikes murder in the very same hospital where he was recuperating. 'Don' is 'Don' throughout 'Don' and not a single soul barring love of his life, Anita [Isha Kopikar], was aware about that! One of the biggest 'double-cross' games ever was being played right in front of everyone's eyes and they all were taken on a ride.

The man behind the game - 'Don'. 'Don', jise 11 mulkon ki police pakadne ki koshish kar rahi hai this par kisi ko samajh nahi aaya ki usse pakadna mushkil hi nahi namumkin hai!

This is what makes one revisit the film a second time. What was Don thinking when he entered his den once again as Vijay posing as though he had lost his memory? What was going on his mind when he encountered Priyanka? What were his reactions when he realized that DeSilva is actually the man who is his biggest competitor on earth - Vardhan?

One can't help but appreciate Farhan's mastery as a writer and executor on watching the scenes re-fold in front of you. Best written scene is the one where Don is actually made to realize by Jasjit [Arjun Rampal] that he has been set up by DeSilva. While everyone around him, including audience, sympathizes with Vijay, the sinister mind of Don is actually wondering that how could it have happened to him the biggest evil of all! 'Nahi Aisa Nahi Ho Sakta', he says when facing the hard truth. He is someone who is least concerned about being sent to his own den; he is worried more about the fact that his empire is in danger.

A couple of normal looking scenes start sounding a lot more meaningful (and powerful) when seen wearing Don's hat. Remember the scene when Don is sent as Vijay to his gang. While the entire gang tries to revive his memory, he feigns ignorance to everything around him and lies down on a bed. Enter Anita who quietly hands him over a glass of water. A simple eye to eye contact followed by grasp of a hand sans any conversation means a lot. Don is tired after a long battle, wants to take some rest and just needs the support of his lady love! And to think of it, in first viewing it seems like a scene that could have been easily chopped since it hardly made any difference to 'Vijay's life'! Anita's support is visible again in the pre-climax when she says, "Darling, Aaj Vijay Ki Zindagi Ka Aakhri Din Hoga! " And we as audience were half-fooled to believe that she may actually be conversing with Narang [Pawan Malhotra] when the fact was far from true!

There is another subtle scene that may have gone unnoticed by a few even on second viewing. Picture this: Don enters the school where Deepu [Arjun Rampal's kid] studies and just stands at the entrance to have Deepu rush to him. While from Vijay's angle it seemed to be a pensive moment, if one looks at it from Dons point of view, it is quite expected since how else could he have actually reached out to Deepu when he hadn't seen him in his life? Deepu runs to hug him and after a momentary hesitation Don realizes that he is the boy. Were varied expressions on SRK's face always there? Yes, but they became visible and much more apparent only when seen the second time around. A poignant moment comes when Deepu tells him that he has changed. Don has nothing more to answer than say, "Haan, tumhaare Vijay chacha sach mein badal gaye hain". Now could it be more suggestive and direct than this?

His scenes with Priyanka too are not devoid of clear messaging of his true identity. When Roma tries to kill him in rail yard, the two have an engaging fight. Don tries to explain that he is not what she actually thinks [fair enough, we knew he is stating himself as Vijay], but when push comes to shove, he gets her down and in a moment of rage mouths "Ab main tumhe batata hoon main kaun hoon". Just when you thought he would repeat that he is Vijay, DeSilva enters and does the necessary. So far so good. The only difference here is that if DeSilva wouldn't have come in, Roma would have been history. Why? Because Don would have told her that he is indeed Don and killed her right away! Was that apparent in the first viewing? Naah!

All in all, it makes for a thrilling impact when one watches the film a second time viewer. This is when you wear a different hat altogether, that of a Don instead of Vijay, you know the entire plot and above all you see the characters behaving in a different perspective altogether.

Let the detractors of 'Don' be damned, the fact is that the KING IS BACK. And to think of it, this too is mouthed by SRK when after getting back his memory, he announces to his gang while sinking in a sofa along with Anita - I AM BACK!!

Effects of a second time viewing...huh!

LOVED READING THIS PEOPLE AND HAD TO SHARE IT...AM IN TOTAL AGREEMENT WITH JOGINDER…IT'S VERY EXCITING AND YEAH THE KING KHAN IS BACK~:)).
TODAY DECEMBER 1st ~WORLD AIDS DAY 2006

Warnings, Worship Mark World AIDS Day
Friday, December 1, 2006

BERLIN - World Aids Day was marked around the globe by somber religious services, boisterous demonstrations and warnings that far more needs to be done to treat and prevent the disease in order to avert millions of additional deaths.
Ukraine's President Viktor Yushchenko conceded his country was losing ground in the race to curb one of Europe's fastest growing epidemics, saying 100,000 Ukrainians have been officially registered as HIV-positive. Every day, 40 citizens of the former Soviet nation are diagnosed with HIV, and eight die from AIDS, Yushchenko said.
"Such figures are shocking," Yushchenko said in a published address timed to coincide with World AIDS Day. "We can't be indifferent to them."
Yushchenko's statement comes as UNICEF officials warn that of a public health catastrophe in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, where 270,000 people are infected, some 90 percent of them through intravenous drug use.
"Eastern Europe stands at the threshold of an AIDS epidemic of catastrophic proportions, which can only be stopped through a broad-based educational campaign," said Dietrich Garlichs, German head of the United Nations Children's Fund.

In Moscow, dozens of believers lit candles and joined in a prayer service in the small Church of St. Catherine the Great Martyr, part of the U.S.-based Orthodox Church in America.
Women lit thin yellow candles tied with the red ribbons that symbolize the fight against HIV and AIDS, while priests led the chanting of prayers.
The Russian Health Ministry said Russia hopes to provide equal access to anti-retroviral drug therapy for all the HIV-infected.
Chief epidemiologist Gennady Onishchenko said Thursday that the number of officially registered cases of HIV in the country had reached 362,000. But international agencies and some Russian experts say the true number is closer to 1 million.
Activists allege that Russia, where those infected with HIV are often stigmatized, has dragged its feet in battling the disease. Some scientists say the nation faces a devastating epidemic in the next decade if nothing is done, accelerating an already rapid decline in Russia's population.
In London, the day was marked by services in Westminster Cathedral and a concert by the London Gay Mens' Chorus at St. Pancras Church.

In Copenhagen, artist Jens Galschioet put up an eight-foot sculpture of a crucified pregnant teenager outside Copenhagen's Lutheran cathedral. He called it a protest against the idea that "God allows nothing but chastity and unprotected sex."
City authorities gave the artist permission to erect the statue, named "In the Name of God," outside the cathedral.
Anders Gadegaard, the cathedral's dean, appeared to welcome the message. "It's a good supplement to the crucifix we have inside the church," he said.
President Bill Clinton warned in an interview with the BBC that India, which has the largest population of HIV infected people in the world, has become the new epicenter of the global AIDS pandemic. The challenge of controlling the epidemic in India, with 5.7 million infected, is "breathtaking," he said, but it can be achieved.

"This is not rocket science," Clinton told the BBC. "We know what to do."
The Clinton Foundation announced Thursday it had struck a deal with two Indian companies to supply 19 antiretroviral drugs for HIV-infected children at steeply discounted prices. Only one in 10 children who needs treatment is getting it, Clinton said in a statement.
The cheap drugs will be available to 100,000 children in 62 developing countries in Africa, Asia, Latin American and the Caribbean by next year.
But the need for additional treatment and prevention programs, health officials say, is still staggering. The global pandemic has killed 25 million people since the first case was reported in 1981, with 40 million currently infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
Nations across Asia marked the day with events both serious and lighthearted. In Indonesia, demonstrators marched through the streets of the capital with their faces wrapped in white sheets, some carrying signs that said "No more stigma!" and "Stop HIV/AIDS."
In Thailand, AIDS activists planned Friday evening to create the world's "Longest Condom Chain," intended to raise awareness about the disease. Organizers planned to arrange 25,000 condoms side-by-side on a ribbon placed on the ground, stretching through Bangkok's Lumpini Park.
Thailand is considered a leader in the global fight against AIDS, and has made significant gains in reducing the number of new infections through the aggressive promotion of condom use by men who patronize prostitutes.

In China, schoolgirls decorated classrooms with red ribbons, the international symbol for AIDS awareness. Chinese taxi drivers handed out angel-shaped cards with promoting steps to prevent HIV infections and discrimination against those already infected.
The Chinese Health Ministry said last week that the number of reported HIV/AIDS cases rose by almost 30 percent in the first 10 months of this year, from 144,089 to 183,733. Intravenous drug use was the biggest source of infection, the ministry said.
Health experts estimate that the actual number of cases is four or five times higher than the reported figure.
In Papua New Guinea, the governor general and the health minister took HIV/AIDS blood tests in front of hundreds of people to encourage voluntary testing.
Governor general Paulias Matane and minister Peter Barter attended a rally at the Tabari open-air craft market in Port Moresby and gave blood samples as hundreds of spectators applauded.
Papua New Guinea has the highest incidence of HIV/AIDS among Pacific countries, with around 2 percent of the population estimated to be HIV-positive.
Clinton was due to visit the country Sunday to launch a new voluntary testing and counseling program. He is scheduled to visit Vietnam next week, where his Clinton Foundation runs AIDS treatment programs for children.

In Hanoi on Friday, about 450 people participated in an event that brought together about 20 people infected with HIV and hundreds of those not infected, with the aim of reducing the stigma attached to the virus. The group pitched a dozen large tents, where people ate lunch, talked and sang together.
A "Condom Fashion Show" featured outfits stitched together with condoms.
"We really need something like this so that people will understand more about the epidemic," said Nguyen Minh Phuong, 37, who is infected with HIV. "It allows us to do something useful and help prevent the disease from spreading."
In Indian-controlled Kashmir, meanwhile, public health authorities have found an unexpected ally in their battle against HIV and AIDS in the deeply conservative region.
The Jammu-Kashmir state AIDS prevention and control agency has enlisted hundreds of Islamic clerics to carry the message of safe sexual practices to Muslim believers, officials said Friday.
Top Muslim cleric Mufti Nazir Ahmed usually preaches sermons at a mosque in Kashmir that urge Muslims to avoid promiscuity and homosexuality - widely believed to be among the major reasons for the spread of AIDS.

"Wherever I deliver a sermon, I talk about AIDS. Methods to prevent AIDS corresponds exactly with the teachings of Islam," Ahmed said Friday. "If one follows the Islamic way, by no means can one contract AIDS."
At least 37 people have died of AIDS in Jammu-Kashmir over the last decade while another 931 people have tested positive for HIV or AIDS, he said.
Sometime late in 2003, I was sleeping in a hut with my grandmother. There was a noise in the compound. The door was forced open and torchlight flashed in my face.
My grandmother pleaded with them to leave me since I was still quite young and an orphan.
I struggled with them and tried to bite one of them. He gave me a strong blow on the back of my head and they pulled me out into the compound.
Groups to Judge Madonna Fitness to Adopt: MALAWI, AFRICA... Wednesday, November 29, 2006

LILONGWE, Malawi - Human rights organizations will help decide whether Madonna is fit to adopt a Malawian toddler, a judge ruled Wednesday.

Judge Andrew Nyirenda ruled in favor of a coalition of 67 Malawian human rights and child advocacy groups who want to be party to the assessment of the 48-year-old pop singer's fitness as a mother.

On Oct. 12, Nyirenda granted Madonna and her husband, filmmaker Guy Ritchie, an interim order allowing them to take initial custody of 14-month-old David Banda. The couple were allowed to take David to their London home.

Malawi regulations stipulate that prospective parents undergo an 18-to 24-month assessment period in the country.

The rights groups, saying they were concerned the government had cut legal corners to fast-track the adoption, said regulations must be followed to protect children.

"I must stress that all along we have not been against the adoption but we only wanted Malawi's adoption laws clarified and followed to the letter," said Justin Dzonzi, a lawyer and chairman of the Human Rights Consultative Commission. "Today's ruling gives us the opportunity to clear (up) some gray areas surrounding adoption laws in Malawi."

Nyirenda said in his written order that he saw no reason to refuse the rights groups' application.

"I believe the applicants mean well and this court will certainly benefit from the applicants' researched opinions," he said.

The organizations will now be part of the government's first assessment of Madonna and Ritchie, expected next May.

In a country ravaged by AIDS, an estimated 2 million children have lost one or both parents and hundreds are adopted by foreigners every year. Madonna's adoption bid coincided with her larger project to help Malawian orphans.

The human rights groups have argued that Malawi needs to ensure the adoption process cannot be exploited by pedophiles or child traffickers.
RE: ANNE GOES TO NIGERIA!!

Outside of my work as a Field Coordinator at ONE, I have been involved in an organization called the Gwaimen Center, a community project in Kwoi, Nigeria to support widows and orphans. The Center provides basic necessities, education, vocational training, and a clinic, so that the widows and orphans can grow to support themselves and their community.

I first visited Kwoi, Nigeria, in April. This Thanksgiving, I returned for the groundbreaking of the Center. I had such a good time. I'm not sure I've found the words yet to describe. The groundbreaking was so amazing - the whole community came together - from city folk to political leaders to all sorts of people from the community.

In April when I went to Kwoi, I spent a lot of time with a little girl who is an orphan. She captured my attention - and was listless and clearly malnourished with a distended belly. She just sat there with this serious look on her face.

This time around, I almost didn't recognize her. She looked years older, was ridiculously cute, and was running around doing cartwheels. It was totally amazing. I couldn't believe it.

It's incredible to see what three healthy meals a day can do. A little really can go a long way.

I came back to work at ONE exhausted, but renewed in my commitment to fight global poverty and AIDS. In the midst of a crisis beyond my comprehension, there is an opportunity to do something, as individuals, and as a nation. We can partner with efforts like this around the world and we can make poverty history.
The Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) today announced that this year's festival will honour Shah Rukh Khan, Oliver Stone and Nabil El-Maleh for their outstanding contribution to cinema, as part of the DIFF Salutes programme.

DIFF Salutes is a retrospective tribute that celebrates the work of distinguished filmmakers from Asia, the Arab world and Hollywood. This follows last year's In the Spotlight segment, which honoured Oscar-winning American actor Morgan Freeman, the Egyptian "king of comedy" Adel Imam, and Indian producer-director Yash Chopra.

Abdulhamid Juma, Chairman of DIFF said: "Within three years, DIFF has come a long way in capturing the attention, participation and awareness of the regional and international film industry. The presence of these legends will confirm the festival as a forum that celebrates milestone cinema. Retrospective screenings of their acclaimed work will provide further momentum to DIFF's objective of inspiring an emerging generation of film makers, who we think will take the industry to new levels of growth."

DIFF will pay tribute to the honourees during the Dubai International Film Festival 2006, which will run from 10-17 December at the Madinat Jumeirah.
SHAHRUKH KHAN...ALWAYS A STAR ARTICLE...

GLOBAL STAR OF THE YEAR ON NOVEMBER 20, 2006
<img src="http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j129/jules31_SRK/71841552bv0-1.jpg"
November 2, 1965 brought into the world someone whose persona would be that of an emotional, passionate, intense, funny, and down-to-earth man. This man would come to share his many extraordinary talents with the world, in time. This description should paint a mental picture for you of our Star of the Week - Mr. Shah Rukh Khan, both in real life and on the big screen. In other words, welcome to Shah Rukh Khan 101.

Interesting enough, we can add to the aforementioned qualities which Shah Rukh inherited from his mother, whom he admires most of all, shy and sensitive. He credits Mumtaz with inspiring some of his moves and mannerisms, stemming from his scrutinizing study of her when he was just a young boy. His most admired actor is Dilip Kumar, who he considers to be the greatest actor of India. Some agree with his mom that he even looks like Mr. Kumar, a statement that makes Shah blush.

The "Rukster", as he is affectionately known, has a following of many loyal fans. How loyal? A good example is when he was going in his back operation, from which he emerged unchanged, according to him. Over 102,000 e-mails were collected by his #1 fan, and presented to him. This loving and immense undertaking did not go unnoticed. A call placed to this fan's home, left her without words as she heard his voice on the other end of the line. A voice that many have described as being like smooth, dark chocolate, candy for the ears.

The Internet is literally teeming with hundreds of web sites dedicated to the Baadshah, where people from all countries and walks of life come to share their thoughts and feelings about him. What is his humble response to all his dedicated devotees? "I cannot repay my fans for what they have done for me, they have given me so much love, and that love has taken me to where I am today. The only thing I can do for my fans is to never stop working, and to do films till the very end. It is the only way I can express my love for them." His family and friends have formed a strong and lasting bond with him as well. He often speaks with endearment about his beautiful wife Gauri, their two adorable children Aryan and Suhana, and his sister Shehnaaz. The names of friends like Yash and Karan Johar, Farah Khan,Yash and Aditya Chopra, and Vivek Vaswani are closely linked alongside his.

In quoting how much of an effect they have had on his young life of just 41 years, he affectionately comments, "I look upon life as a book, and the people I love are like rose petals kept between the pages. Each time I turn a page of my life, I find a rose petal, reminding me of my beautiful memories. "His early years saw him as a restaurateur in New Delhi. But that venture was soon traded in for another, Bollywood's most sought after actor. It all began in the theater with Barry John, the one person he believes taught him all he knows about acting. July 16th of this year marked the debut of his first 15 years in the entertainment world. That year brought us the TV serials 'Fauji' and 'Circus'. Once SRK got his big break in Bollywood, there was no turning back. His hardworking, energetic, and "road runner" type personality, according to co-star Juhi Chawla, has helped him push full steam ahead with his career. And although he's had his share of falling on hard times in the industry, he hasn't let that slow him down.

Cast for the most part as a lover of various types, (it's been narrowed down to six), I find it amusing when he says, "For someone who doesn't even like love stories, I've played an awful lot of lovers." And for some unknown reason, which even Shah Rukh doesn't understand, he's played a character named Rahul for at least seven out of his plethora of films. He has acquired numerous awards for his outstanding performances, including, but not limited to, Darr (1994), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) , Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) , Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Mohabbatein (2000), Asoka (2001), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), and Devdas (2002). "All that's left is the Best Actress Award," he mischievously laughs. There’s a strong desire within this actor to please.

Summing up this admirable quality, he admits, "I'm an actor and I'm always entertaining. I'm a court jester. But my acting is for real. I'm on 24 hours. The only time I don't act is when I'm sleeping. But I'm genuine and I don't fake my emotions. I can't dissociate from acting anymore. You can take me out of the actor, but you can't take the actor out of me.” His career isn't just limited to acting though. When discussing his venture into the sphere of producers, together with actress and close long-time friend Juhi Chawla, and the man whom both of them consider to be a father figure, Aziz Mirza, he has shown himself to be very diplomatic. “The logic of Dreamz Unlimited is not to make money but to make different films," he states as matter-of- fact. "It should be a little bit different from what others are doing. If I find that everyone is opening a toy store, I would like to open a toy store with one special toy that nobody has. The idea is to make the kind of programmes that we would like to watch, programmes that don't insult your intelligence. To date, Dreamz Unlimited has brought lovers of the Hindi cinema three films. Chronologically they are, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000), Asoka (2001) and Chalte Chalte (2003).

Why go back to the fundamental romantic/comedy story line, you may ask? Well, after his two brilliant performances of "larger than life characters," namely Devdas and Asoka, Shah Rukh wanted to play it safe and go back to profiling characters that the average person can relate to; a "four shirt and jeans" kind of guy. Putting it simply he explains, "Chalte Chalte was a story about two people who have problems just like you and me." And there you have the essence of what Hindi films should be about.

However, this year Shahrukh's film roles have had number of twists and some major changes...In Kabhie Alvida Naa Kehna, he plays a lover except this time, he is a married man who has an affair with a married woman a thing not typically seen in Indian movies but nonetheless his fans were ecstatic at him playing such a role and what do you know, it was quite a hit. Then comes the newly released DON, a remake of Amitabh Bachchan's 1978 classic also called DON...It has already become a hit and half of the Indian Cinema audience globally has not even watched it. What can we say, except that Shahrukh Khan and his films are here to stay, so we might as well keep enjoying them.

On that note, we wish our Star of the year all the best with Chakde India currently in shooting in Australia, his forthcoming films, Om Shanti Om Om, Bhootnath, I See You, and the many others in his long future, as he continues to faithfully entertain us year after year. Abhi na jao chodkar Shah Rukh.

According to sources, a quiet industry trial of 'Don' was held on Monday in Mumbai, attended by the Bachchan family, Shah Rukh Khan, Sachin Tendulkar and many other personalities. We are told that the initial reactions have been extremely heartening and that the twists will take the audience by storm. Shah Rukh is looking sinfully good, remarked our source.

Meanwhile, the excitement around 'Don' in the UK is unimaginably enormous, with several channels and radio stations actually (and amusingly) receiving complaints from patrons on account of an over hype of the film by the UK distributor. Reactions to a recent trial in London have been positive. It's a
Commercial entertaining thriller, which holds you till the end credits, said our source.

We are also informed that a leading multinational bank's high net-worth customers have actually flown in to London from various parts of Europe especially to watch 'Don' on Wednesday evening.

The film previews in the UK on Thursday 19th October…
