Well, I'll try :) Let see.. my life..

First off; I got first place in a 50 meter backstroke competition! I beat the guy by only 1 second, but the most important thing was that I beat my own time. I also beat my time in the 50 meter freestyle, and got 2nd place. This was definately my best swim meet so far, and I hope I get better and better :-)

Also, I won a scholarship to attend a saxophone lessons. I was flabergasted because I had no idea I would get it :) The lessons start tomorrow, so wish me luck with the new teacher. I've never had a "private" lesson teacher before, so this ought to be interesting.

Hmmm... Well thats about it. I'll try to post here more often, and maybe I'll get in a habit of it :-)

Well, last weekend I went to Chicago. It wasn't a ordinary trip to Chicago. It was the United for Peace and Justice's march in the Midwest against the Iraq War. It was an amazing experience; one I will always remember. There were thousands of people. The police, almost 300 of them present at the march, estimated that there were 5,000 people at the march. UFPJ estimated 30,000. The Chicago March was only one of 11 marches around the country; being the 2nd biggest (next to New York City). Here are some of my pictures from the event:

I carried this sign ^^

You can find more of my pictures from the march by clicking here.

Without it, I believe, there would be no violence and hatred. There would be education for all. There would be no hunger or starvation. But, back to reality, these are only dreams.

Today, is the Global Day of Action Against Poverty. Today is also one of the days of STAND UP, an initiative where many people around the world will be holding events demanding action for the UN Millenium Development Goals.

If we want really do want to make poverty history, we have to get our act together now. Signing an online petition will not cut it. We all need to start volunteering in our communities and donating money to worthwhile causes. It's time for action.

Dear All,

I just wanted to wish you a very Happy Blog Action Day. Today, thousands of bloggers from around the world will post about one topic; the environment. I am of course participating; but just wanted to thank Victoria for introducing this project to me.

Ok. Well, as we all know, the enviroment is an essential part of our daily lives. Without it; we would be plain robots not even thinking about stopping to smell the roses, or acknowledge the crispness of the air. Without it, we would not be able to appreciate the beautifulness of nature, and the animals who live there.

But what can we do to save and protect our planet for future generations? We can each do our part. It's actually easier than you might think; just reuse, reduce, and recycle. Each person might find it easier, or harder depending on their lifestyle. We can also help the work of Greenpeace, and The Sierra Club; and we can each pick up trash while walking down the street. You can find more helpful tips at The Green Dream, YFCI's project about global warming.

We must act for the future..

I got up at 3:45AM and had to catch my plate at 6. It was a long and exhausting morning, but finnally we got to San Francisco and the Golden Gate! On our way to St. Helena (where we're staying), we went to Muir Woods; home of the world's tallest trees; the Redwood. Some of those trees were thousands of years old; quite a lifetime. But was even more fascinating was that there were once 2,000,ooo acres of Redwood forests, but now there are only 150,000. Interesting..

We checked into our hotel; a very homey-cheery little place. There are grapevines surrounding the resort. They've even got a swimming pool and a small little hot tub. Later, we got together with the rest of the family, and had dinner at the Calistoga Inn. I had Pasta Avocado, which was pretty garlicy. But, it was a nice place.

It was 12:00 our time once we turned in. Now, we're going to a kid-friendly vineyard with a couple of my wild cousins. See Yah!

My cousin is getting married, so I'm going to miss two whole days of school. The wedding is going to be in a vineyard, somewhere outside of San Fran, where my cousin works. I'm staying one night out there, and two nights in the city. I can't wait!

Anyway; I found did this quiz on HungerMovement.org on how I "will change the world", (see the results below) and hope you'll do the quiz too! (Email me your results, too!)

A go-getter like you knows the world’s problems aren’t about to fix themselves. And if no one takes the lead, how can any real change happen?

Courageous and hard-working, you have a talent few others share. No doubt, when you enter anything from a party to a classroom to a boardroom, the spotlight turns your way. And with your ability to motivate and inspire, why shouldn’t it?

Could the history books potentially read Gandhi, Mandela and you? It’s possible.

Dear YFCI members and staff,

I hope you all enjoyed your vacations. I hope you also enjoyed the last edition of YFCI summer edition of Alpha Magazine.

It’s time to surge ahead to the next Edition of Alpha Magazine. This time I thought it would be interesting to dedicate a section of the Magazine to a very urgent issue that our world needs to address at the moment. After experiencing a scorching summer where temperature rocketed to 49 Degree Celsius, I felt it was the need of the hour to concentrate on the issue of “Global Warming”.
At YFCI as you all know we encourage country specific articles and reports on issues, so I would like members to conduct a research on the effects of Global warming on their own country or neighbourhood. You can concentrate on the following things for a start;
1. Changes in weather and temperature patterns over the century.
2. Sectors (Industries/household/ farming/etc) which are the largest contributors of the emission of Carbon Dioxide and other harmful gases.
3. The treatment of industrial waste and the regulatory measures for controlling the damage caused to the environment.
4. Contribution of the household sector in the greenhouse effect (a sector which is often neglected) and possible measures to reduce it.
5. Vehicular emission
6. Counter measures to control greenhouse effect ( Existing and proposed)
7. Suggestions to minimize the damage caused.

The above suggestions are given only to help you all in your research and study.
We here at YFCI also welcome people who do not believe in the concept of Global Warming and say that it is a conspiracy to exhort money in the name of research.

You are also welcome to present your views against the concept. The basic submission guidelines are available here ( http://www.freewebs.com/yfcimag/submissionguidelines.htm).
In addition we encourage members to attach relevant photos or paintings or cartoons which can be featured alongside their writings. The picture/cartoon/painting adjudged the most interesting will find special mention in the magazine and the member will earn points on the YFCI discussion board J
Apart from the theme mentioned above the members can still submit country specific articles on the issues mentioned here (http://www.freewebs.com/yfcimag/submissionguidelines.htm ) Please check out the submission guidelines. The last date for submission is July 20, 2007.
Please mail your writings and contributions to the Editor-in-Chief, YFCI Magazine at yfci_editor@yahoo.com

So please hurry!!!! Time is running out!!!!!!

Best,

Anu Maheshwari
Editor-in-Chief
YFCI

P.S . Please send the writings in Times New Roman font size 12 .

The taxi drivers and public transportation workers protested the unfair gas prices in Peru, as they probally were most affected by the price. I did not personally see it, but my friends say it was very interesting to see. Suposidly, they blockaded the streets with large rocks and threw things at cars. They said there were police everywhere, just waiting to strike them.

The protests here are dangerous, and most citizens don´t leave their homes. The city is shut down in fear the the protesters will hurt them. In the past, the army was even called in. But, luckilly, not today.

Yesterday, we (my group and I) had to get up at 6:00AM to get on the tour bus to Colca Canyon. Before the bus got there, I was expecting a little tiny van that you see regularilly here in Arequipa. But no, this bus was the real deal. Our guide, Renzo, was really informational, and quite good at his job (which later ended up him getting a good tip). The road to the canyon was really beautiful, even though it´s not what I´m used to. The terrain is desert-like, with allot of shrubs.

The bus ride was tough, a rough 4 hours on a bumpy road seeming to go nowhere. But, at last, I saw the first glimpse of some whitecapped mountains in the distance, which I guess means your getting close (finnally!). Hehe, I´m over exageratting on the ride; we met allot of great and funny people! There was this family from England that were living in Sao Paulo, Brazil and another sweet couple from the UK. I knew this was going to be a fun journey.

The hotel was wonderful, lots of colors and a great buffet dining room. My shared room was also cool, with a great view of the Colca Valley; only a half an hour from the canyon. The not so cool part; the hotel owned a spitting llama (I´m pretty sure it was a llama, but maybe it was an alpaca). Llamas are one of my favorite animals, but almost 100% of the time I get spat at. This time was the same (as always), but only this time he spat at me twice. Later in the day, we took a hike with Renzo to the mountain. It took everyone´s breath away.. the terraces (the Inca way of farming, more here) were really interesting to look at. After taking a billion group photos, we headed back. On the way back down the path, there were several ¨stops¨with Peruvian kids (maybe 8 or 9) explaining some of the different kinds of corn, potatoes, and other crops. Some even had a llama (it didn´t spit!). Later, we played rummy all night.

The next morning, we, again, had to get up really early. The montains were great, the canyon even better. We saw condors (usually very rare to see). It was a great small little trip and was, by far, the best thing we have done so far!

It was really fun! I met Tia, as most people call her; such a sweet and gentle lady. Hehe, we took lots of pictures with funny faces and odd and unusual things (as I call it: Modern Art).

But to the more exciting part! This morning, at the private school, we went to the Desfile de el Dia de Padre. It´s actually a competition between three groups: the leones, aguilas, y los tigres. The theme of the parade was Chocolate. It was quite funny seing four and five year-olds in chocolate doughnut costumes. I thought the lion and eagle teams were the most spectacular.

Afterwards, we went to this factory outlet that sells llama and alpaca products. They also have the animals right out back. It was allot of fun!

That´s all for today. Tonight we are going shopping.

What a wonderful city! We walked around in the commercial district, Arequipa´s Michigan Avenue. The shops range from men´s clothes, to electronics, to casinos, and pratically everything you need. The streets here remind me of narrow Italian streets, barely enough room for two cars on opposite sides of the street. We walked into a multilevel mall that had many cool and interesting Inca art for sale. (Whoaa!). But the most fun part of the downtown would have to be the square. I think the square was the most facinating. On one side of the four-sided square, there is a gigantic church. (as seen right) Look how beautiful it is!

Today, I went through my first day of school. It is quite different than the average American school. The students stay in the same classroom, and the teachers come to their classroom; much different from my school back home. They have 4 classes, each 2 hours. Between classes, they have a 15 minue break. During the break, you can rest, play soccer or go to the ¨cafeteria¨ (much more like a snack bar). The school is also very nice, with many different buildings. We had part of one class outside under the trees.

Later today, I´m going to get together with my fellow classmates and have some pizza. I can´t wait to tell you more. So, Have a good day!

I did get about an hour of sleep (when I wasn´t watching some CBS premiers, that were showed on the flight.

The view here is spectacular! Here, I'll be talking about my life, my upcoming trip to Perú, and lots more randomness to come.. Well, here's my day so far:

Today was my last day of school before I leave to Perú. It was a pretty good day, but kinda embarassing. We played for the eighth grade completion ceremony. We played the National Anthem. Besides that, we played Bringer of Joy, Great Gate of Kiev/Hopak, and Best of Bach; songs most people have never heard before. We did pretty good.. well besides the fact that four late people came in the middle of the first song and having to start one whole song over because we were at the wrong speed. But overall, I thought we did good.

And now to the bad part: After we finished and headed back to class, a friend of mine started playing the National Anthem as we were leaving the stage. I played with him. Now.. I played allot louder then he did. Guess what? The door to the stage was still open; right at the moment our principal was making a speech! Gladly, Ms. Kincaid didn't see who was playing (I later confessed going along with it). Ah well; it was better than watching "Shiloh" all hour.

Tomorrow I leave for Perú... I'm SO excited! I'm pretty much packed; I've got my sunglasses, and my camera (and Butt Wipes [insider joke for Perú-goers.. no time to explain now]... woops). Haha, well I'll hopefully update this blog down there.

Have a great summer everyone!

Seven logos were created for the contest, members showed a great amount of excitment about the contest, all was very eager to know the results too.

Our moderator 'winmsn' created two logos. Our ambassador from Malaysia 'fathiamar' created four logos. Our members 'evilslayer' and 'sohuda' colaborated and created one. It was an opportunity for our members to show their creativity in creating logos. The winner was to be given 10 karmas and would recieve a certifcate from YFCI. The winner was announced on the second of March and was no other than our member 'fathiamar'. His logo A4 won the contest, he recieved 10 karmas and a certificate from YFCI.

Now you can see the logo on our website, communities on social networks such as bebo and orkut. The exisiting logo is YFCI's special mark now and will remain so for the rest of the year. The other participatents were also given certificates.
