So I missed a couple of weeks. Exams took me out back and gave me a couple beatings. Anyways, Career trek is going really well. We are finished the water filter, and now we are working on a three person sling shot, so that we can use it for the presentation to the parents. This presentation is on the 5th of April, and the students will be presenting what they did for the year. I will be posting more pics hopefully soon.

So I was at home for reading week but I will give you the update that I got for last week.

The Clay pot was started, and it went well, but it went too long, so it has to be finished tonight. That means that we will be hopefully finishing the pot and then starting a new project tonight. Cross your fingers! I haven't even seen it yet, so I am really excited to see it. look for my next update to explain the clay pot in detail.

PLANS

SO I haven't posted for two weeks. Last week, we decided on how we wanted to design our water testing and our stand and our clay pot. The plan was for me to pick up clay and we could do the pot.

However I got the wrong clay and two of the students were sick, so we went over our water testing information and ideas for our last project. We have decided that as our last day is the 22nd of March, we don't have much time left so it should be a smaller project. One of the better liked ideas was a catapult.

Now I understand this doesn't sound development related, but it could be used for things like outreach events, it is a smaller project and it is something engineering related and interesting. We haven't decided for sure though so it could be something else.

Next week, we are for sure doing the clay pot and finishing water testing methods, so that we can move onto our next project in two weeks.

Later!
We got as far as almost draining all the clean water through. This week we have to design a system for testing the water, as well as the secondary filter the clay pot.

Still haven't figured out how to do pics on here, but as soon as I do, I will post pics of the filter as well.

Hey Guys,

Little bit late but I would like to update one what happened at the Dec 7 meeting. We got our research together, and we did some designing. I have 6 designs that I will upload done by the students. The Students decided to Use a two part water filter, which uses a sand filter, and then a clay filter before being fully cleaned. The first step was to design and build the sand filter, and doing the clay part afterwards. Read on to the next post to find out what happened when we came back from holidays.
Instead Dave Damberger a long term intern in Zambia came and did a presentation for us, and then we went over our design again and worked out some issues. These designs will be posted as soon as I get them small enough to post. After the 25th I will post again to let you know how everything went with the building!
So we researched away, and came up with some great ideas for water filters including clay water filters, charchoal water filters, gravel water filters, two pot sediment systems and UV cleaning systems. Tomorow, we will finalize the design and hopefully do drawings and bang out details.

Hey Everyone,

First I will explain what Career Trek is and what we have been doing. Career Trek Phase 2 is an 8 month program run for grade 9 students who are less likely to go on to post secondary education. The students are hand selected because their respective schools think they are something special.

There are around 9 projects being run this year, and this one in particular is run by Engineers Without Borders Manitoba. The idea is to get the students thinking about engineering and technology as it can help people in developing countries.

The first few weeks were spent on introducing the students to development, energy sector, water and sanitation sector, and agriculture and food processing sector. Then we moved onto our design component.

I am excited to say that last week we officially decided on our first project. The students will work on building a full scale water filter for a developing country. Tonight we will start research.
