How much money can make you rich?

How much money does it take for you to be rich? N100,000? N500,000? For most people, they would feel quite rich with less money than one might guess. And as a graphic artist, this idea of “rich” can have a huge impact on how you decide to build your business.

Varous headlines has shown how people view rich, and the median income that people call rich? N150,000. That’s a lot of money. Not Cribs money, but enough to live a generous comfortable life. Predictably, this “rich” dollar amount changes according to how much the person currently earns. For people who earn N50,000 or less, the median “rich” amount was N100,000. For earners of over N50,000, the median “rich” amount was N200,000. So what does this mean to people creating their dream business? It means that the data still shows that “rich” is a relative bar. Once you pass a money milestone, there’s another one staring you in the face.

More important is to work on building something that you love and that makes you happy. Studies show that once someone earns N75,000, they have reached the peak of money-made happiness. A person that makes N300,000 may very well be happier than someone who makes N100,000, but it’s not because of the money. There is a balance between fiscal responsibility and creating a company unilaterally devoted to the desires of your customers, your employees, and you. If you can’t ultimately achieve profitability, it doesn’t matter how many people you make happy, because you’ll be gone. But if you cut throats to win, then what did you create? Is the world a better place? B corporations go so far as to write into their corporate charters specific social and community goals and responsibilities. The triple bottom line is a balance that you can achieve, don’t treat it like a war.

A new variant of an old worm is making its way through Facebook, stealing log on credentials and possibly compromising financial accounts.

Facebook users should be on alert. An old worm has learned some new tricks and is spreading through the social network, compromising accounts and possibly gaining access to financial information. Seculert claims that log on credentials from over 45,000 Facebook accounts have been stolen so far.

The Ramnit malware itself has been around for quite a while. The initial discovery dates back to April of 2010. An October 2010 post from McAfee explains that the worm is capable of infecting EXE, DLL, and HTML files, and breaks down in detail how the malware works.

Ramnit worm spreads on Facebook and exploits weak security to compromise financial accounts.Following the release of the ZeuS botnet source code, though, malware developers borrowed from the ZeuS playbook to modify Ramnit. The resulting merger is a worm that has the scope and propagation of Ramnit, combined with the financial data-stealing talents of ZeuS.

Bill Morrow, executive chairman for Quarri Technologies, explains that the original Ramnit variants were thought to be spread via compromised USB thumb drives. The new variant, however, is spreading through Facebook using stolen credentials.

Seculert speculates that the attackers may be exploiting poor security practices to compromise more than just Facebook. It says, “Cybercriminals are taking advantage of the fact that users tend to use the same password in various web-based services (Facebook, Gmail, Corporate SSL VPN, Outlook Web Access, etc.) to gain remote access to corporate networks.”

There are basically two things you can do to prevent becoming a victim of this latest Ramnit variant. First, think twice about clicking on links from your Facebook contacts. Actually, think twice about clicking on any links or opening any file attachments from any contacts on any social networks or Web-based services. You should be especially skeptical if a contact you barely communicate with sends you an obscure link out of the blue.

The other thing you can do to minimize the potential impact of this Ramnit worm, and guard your data and financial accounts against compromise is to not use the same username and password credentials for more than one service. It is bad enough if your Facebook account is compromised, but the attackers shouldn’t also be able to hack into your bank account, Gmail account, or anywhere else using those same credentials.

The Seculert post sums up nicely: “As demonstrated by the 45,000 compromised Facebook subscribers, the viral power of social networks can be manipulated to cause considerable damage to individuals and institutions when it is in the wrong hands.”

A MUST READ: Four things you need to know in 2012

I will drive home my points straight

1. Stop Relying on Handshakes and Promises from Your Friends

People move on, intentions get misinterpreted, and business deals go sour. These are facts of life as a CEO and entrepreneur, and it is for these reasons that contracts need to be put into writing. That handshake deal may seem like a jumping off point, but are you really sure of what you agreed to? When will the relationship end? What happens if they miss a payment, or you miss a delivery? What does an adequate “delivery” really consist of? Who owns what? If these questions aren’t answered in advance, you are exposing yourself to a whole host of contingencies, risks and potential liabilities that could (and should) be avoided.

2. Get Professional with Your Website or Blog

I am not referring to design, coding or marketing—I am quite sure that you have these handled already. What I am referring to is making sure that your website does not expose you to (again) unnecessary potential risks and liabilities. If you accept third-party content—whether through blog comments, forums or guest submissions—or if you sell pretty much anything on your site (including advertising space) you need to have custom-tailored Terms of Use and a detailed Privacy Policy that protect your interests and limit your exposure. A website audit to make sure that you aren’t violating any third-party intellectual property rights also wouldn’t be a bad idea.

3. Make Sure You’re Not Already in Trouble

Speaking of intellectual property, when was the last time you cleared a trademark or any third-party media that you incorporated into your product or promotions? If your answer is (a) Never, (b) Once back when I started the company, or (c) What does “cleared” mean?, it is time to take care of this—now.

Using a trademark that is “confusingly similar” to a pre-existing brand and using third-party content without a license are two fundamental errors that can set you back big time. Keep in mind: trademark infringement is trademark infringement regardless of whether you know you are doing it or not; and, content is not “available” or in the public domain simply because you can access it on the Internet.

4. Start Treating Your Business Like it’s Your Future

As a business owner, it is critical to step back from the day-to-day and focus on the bigger picture. Building a business is about focusing on what’s next, and from a legal perspective this requires that you take steps now so that you are in a position to seize opportunities as they arise. This means getting your ducks (read: assets and relationships) in a row—knowing what you have (and what you need to acquire), and knowing what you can rely on when the time to rely comes along. Regardless of whether you are planning to sell out, franchise, or build a personal brand that will elevate you to new heights, these tasks are part of the universal to-do list for business owners planning for long-term success in 2012.

Internet of 2011. Vs. The Internet of 2010

The Internet of 2011 vs. The Internet of 2010

Where were you on the Internet in 2010? What about in 2011? The folks over at Saintwares.ng have compiled a nice set of data for the Internet, by the Internet. That is, an entire list of data about email, websites, web servers, domain names by their .dot web addresses, Internet users by country, types of social media, web browser usage, mobile users, videos and images. We decided to take a look at the data points that tell us the most about the web: websites and domain names, Facebook, Twitter and Internet users by continent. More importantly, we'll look at how the Internet of 2011 compares to the Internet of 2010.

Facebook Twitter: 2010 vs. 2011

Facebook: By the end of 2010, there were 600 million people total on Facebook, and 250 million were new users. Seventy percent of Facebook's user base was located outside the United States. Users installed 20 million Facebook apps each day. Fast-forward one year later: 800+ million users on Facebook, including 200 million new users. By October 2011, Facebook was as big as the Internet of 2004. In 2011, Facebook mobile hit smartphones and Androids everywhere. Three-hundred fifty million Facebook users logged on from their mobile phones. They also shared 30 billion pieces of content (links, notes, photos) on Facebook every month. By the end of 2012, we're likely to see an additional category: Facebook users who log on from their tablets, especially the iPad.

Twitter Loves @ladygaga: By the end of 2010, Twitter counted 25 billion sent tweets, 100 million new accounts and 175 million total users. Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) was Twitter's most followed user, with a whopping 7.7 million followers. By the end of 2011, that number had more than doubled to 18.1 million followers - @ladygaga is still the world's most followed Twitter user. Twitter grew to 225 million accounts, but only 100 million of those were active.

Tumblr and WordPress blogs grew fast in 2011. As of September 2011, Tumblr received 8X more pageviews than WordPress. By the end of the year, Tumblr blogs numbered 39 million and Wordpress blogs hit 70 million.

Where Are The Internet Users? Asia

In 2010, Asia outnumbered all other continents with 42% of Internet users; in 2011, Asia made up 44% of the Internet's population. European Internet users declined from 24.2% in 2010 to 23% by the end of 2011. North America saw a slight drop off, too, from 13.5% to 13%. Africa grew from only 5.6% of the Internet population to 6%. Latin America/Caribbean, Middle East and Oceania/Australia stayed about the same from 2010-2011.

Websites Domain Names in 2010 vs. 2011

As of December 2010, the Internet held 255 million websites. That number more than doubled by the end of December 2011 to 555 million. Of domain name types, .COM grew the most from 88.8 million at the end of 2010 to 95.5 million by the end of 2011. The .NET domain names only grew by 0.6 million, whereas .ORG added 1.3 million domain names. The year 2011 also brought along 7.6 million .info domain names and 2.1 million .biz domains.

What will the Internet of 2012 look like? Post your predictions here.
