Some Liberians went to his rescue and gave him some clothes to wear. This was his story when taken to the police depot on camp: he has been kidnapped for the passed three days by some people who presented themselves as Nigerians businessmen. He was brought to the camp, where he was stripped naked, tied and tortured for three days in a house on the camp. According to him, he met those “Nigerian businessmen” in Accra; they told him they had some gold and diamond for sale. He expressed interest in their offer and followed them, not knowing where they brought him. They went away with $20,000 after cutting off two of his fingers. Later he was left in the room alone and he managed to cut the ropes and got out crying for help. Presently, people in the camp started arresting Nigerians on camp and turning them over to the police to help in the investigation.

She thought over and over again about our discussion that night, and said it was the very first time since her being at the flashpoint for someone to come over to talk with her concerning her life, everymen who past there wanting to take them to bed for money. Looking at the fact in life and I discussed with her that night, she thought it wise to come and find me to see how best I can help to get her learning some skills. Presently she no longer goes to the flashpoint. She now visits my church. One lesson I learn from this girl is that there are many people out there who just want a counsel from someone to help them get back on track with their life.

Due to the difficult times former child soldiers are encountering, most of the former female child soldiers had taken to prostitution on the camp and in Accra. Yesterday night, I visited all the flash points on the camp where they always go. I went there to give them some counseling concerning their lives and how we can address their problems and giving them hope for the future. Most of the girls I talked with had different views: some said, they are willing to leave and join some programs to help them get some skills, but how will they be getting their daily meals? Because they need to eat, take bath and buy clothes. If those needs are not met, from school they will have to come at the flash point, which enables them to get money. I gave them some examples of some of their friends who were at those flash points two years ago, some of them did benefited from our last year scholarship programs through Mediators Beyond Borders. Today, most of them are using their hands to get their livelihood, so they can follow the same example. Some said, they enjoy being at the flash points and will not want anything to do with our programs.

As for the last girl I talked with, her situation was different. A year ago she used to come at the flash points, there she got pregnant. She was still coming until the she was six months-pregnant. She give birth to a premature baby boy in her seventh month, the baby had since been at the hospital for about two months. There are no means to pay her medical bills,

One day we had an open debate between former child soldiers and that of the community. I was the moderator. The debate had two parts. The first was why one became a child soldier? We have five former child soldiers coming upstage to explaining how they became child soldiers. Two of them said they were forced by the rebels to carry arms; one became child soldier because his sisters and mother were raped by soldiers, after he was asked to sleep with his own sister. The other became a child soldier because his entire family was killed. One joined the rebels because he saw his friends from the same community joining the rebels.

Part two of the debate was why one should not take revenge on former child soldier? We told the audience, we were kids, not knowing what we were doing, we were under the influence of drugs and our commanders; we were ignorant not knowing what war was all about. Members of the community were given time to express themselves. 70% of those who came upstage were very proud of our openness, they said it was a very good step to reconciliation, they agreed with our opinions, and said they have already forgiven us and are willing to work and live with us, but they can not forget the memories of the past, because it affected their lives and that of their families. 40% of those who came up stage refused to forgive and forget the past. They said some of them were faced with similar problems, but never took arms as a child, because they never have the mind and heart of destroying God’s creation. The debate was a good step towards our re-integration process.

Fear grip former child soldiers with in their present community and also going back home for fear of people revenging on them for the past.We do feel the ghettos are more safer for us as we stayed in Ghana.I will like to share with my many viewers concerning the murder of three former child soldiers because of their past activities.Bobby, was murder in 2001 by the sons of the man he killed in the war back home.He did killed the father of those guys on order from his commander at that time.Bobby came to Buduburam camp in 2000.When the sons of this man got to know he was in Ghana at the refugees camp, they came to Ghana, used a girl to aid them to murder him.The girl went with Bobby to the club on that Saturday night, about 2am,he and the girl was on their way to his house, just across the main road, those guys emerged from nowhere and attacked him,cut off his head and drained his blood in a white bucket and left.It was a scene to look at that morning on the camp.

In 2002,Augustine a former child soldier was killed by the aid of his own cousin. On that morning around 3am,she came at his house in the gap, knock on his door to have a urgent word with him,as soon he open the door, three guys wasted acid on his face and toke him to the golf and left his body there, after three days before his body was discovered, from the way he was position, one will know he did went through a painful death. It was on his birthday. He left behind his little son.Today, his son mother is path of our program.

In 2007,Fred was killed in Liberia and his body dump on Broad street. He left camp Buduburam due to the death of his father in Monrovia. While at a club that night,a black pick-up drove by,four men got out from the car, enter the club to arrest him, saying they were police officers..He refused to fellow them,he was dragged outside by those men and put in the car.The next morning his body was discovered on the street.Today the Government hasn't said nothing about his death. Many of us fear going back home and also not wanting to be holding part of our community because of what happened to our friends and continuous to happen to us up to date. There are many more cases of such.

Year 1990, Margibi County. After my training I was given an AK-47 rifle to shoot the target. I thought it was a toy gun, because during Christmas daddy used to buy us toy-guns to play with. But this time around when I advanced it and pressed the trigger, it waved me left and right. There I knew it was no longer a toy-gun. During my training I was told that commandoes: two by two, so I always used to move with Thomas, my friend in the Small Boys Unit (SBU). He was about 13 years old and he was like a brother to me. My first battle was with the SBU. We were taken to the front by the Special Forces and information hit our base that some soldiers of the armed forces of Liberia were camping in a village nearby that night. So we got to that village early in the morning and surrounded it. We never knew we were already in the ambush. Before I realized what was happening the rocket-prepared grenade was launched by the Armed Force of Liberia. I was flat on my stomach with my AK-47 firmly in my hand. I heard that signs of most of my friends crying. I could hear Thomas’ voice pleading me for help, but I couldn’t move because bullets were flying here and there. I tried moving behind the tree and when I looked I could not believe my eyes what I saw. Thomas was lying there with two legs cut off. He has clutched his fists with the bushes nearby and was chewing his tongue. With all the marijuana I took that morning, I was afraid when I saw my friend lying there. Cold chill ran through my body and my body became numb. I was lying there for about 45 minutes. After the firing ceased I heard our commander calling. When I looked our men were mapping up the area. I woke up and sat before Thomas crying. The deputy commander came and held me, wiped my tears and asked me to come and see three of the soldiers who killed Thomas and the other boys. When I came, I saw three men sitting in military uniform with their hands tied behind their backs…

The game was played at camp Buduburam, the refugees’ camp, 90% of the players are former child soldiers and the rest war affected youths. The game was one of the most excited games I ever watched. The game ended 3-0 in favor of the Lone Star. The first goal made me share tears, when the scorer was celebrating, he laid on his back and started spanning. I shared tears of sorrow and that of joy. I was happy for the goal and at the same time sorry for his situation. The pitch was over crowed with Liberians and Ghanaians. There was a victory song the Liberians girls were singing: “Liberia… sweet land of liberty, we prophecy to you, you will rise, you shine, you prosperous, in Africa… yield the World. Liberia…you are lifted amen, halliujah amen. After the game, I did talk with the co-chairman, according to him. when they started the team, the nation was looking down on the disabled players, but today they are the nation’s pride, They are qualified for the world disabled championship. In my next update, I will love to share with my many viewers, my first attack as a child soldier.

While driving with a friend in Accra, a mad man emerged from the corner of the street and came on the road, this scene give me a flashback, which I will love to share with my many viewers. During the civil war in my country Liberia, the rebels came up with a military strategy by sending men as spies, and those men were acting on the street as if they were mad people, until when the areas were captured. Then you would suddenly see them in arms with the rebels. Based on that, the military started executing all mad people in their control area. Many mad people who were with us years before the war did lose their lives due to this.

The Devil forest was attacked yesterday by the local villagers who are the owners of the land. According to them the attitudes of the guys in the forest have caused their gods to be angry, and their gods killed four of their brothers in the village. Because of that, they armed themselves with cutlasses and attacked the forest. Presently the devil forest is deserted and guarded by the villagers.

Camp is divided into 12 zones, and there are three ghettoes within those zones were most of the former child soldiers do spend their time not wanting any problem from the community. The first ghetto is called ‘the gap’, the second in called Barkla yard, and the last one in called the Devil Forest and it is located at the far end of zone 11, within the forest.

I was at the Devil forest this morning on my normal routine to identify former child soldiers and help reintegrate them in our programs and projects. I came across a friend from the same unit when we were fighting in 1990. I couldn’t recognize this guy anymore because we were kids at that time, but he could still recognize me. He was cutting his Indian herb to be parcel for sale when I greeted him, trying to tell him about myself and that of my mission to the forest, he astonished me by calling me by my nick name when we were in the bush fighting. That, actually, put me on my heels, there he was recollecting my past… we did have a lengthy discussion, but I was not able to convince him to leave the forest, cause his mind was made up not to have anything to do with the community, but just to be in the forest to find for his living.

In the Devil forest, there are five joints, when I got to the second joint which is called the ‘crab hole’, I did call for one shot of herb tea, while drinking, I met a former child soldier from the Ivory Coast who was really stressed out concerning his condition since 2003, when he came to Ghana. Presently he survives by selling cassava leafs in the market. He told me he has to walk about an hour and half to purchase the leafs from the Ghanaians in the villages, before getting it to the market. He has a great aspiration about his business, he believes that one day, he will be able to travel abroad, come back and start packaging cassava leafs for export. Presently he is undergoing counseling with our counselors. He doesn’t actually have any fear, because Ivorians aren’t many.

Today, we have about 125 former child soldiers identified and about 10% of them still have fragments or bullets in them. One of those with fragment in his body lives with me in the same block. Presently he is living on one kidney, due to surgery from bullets some years ago; he also has one fragment in his right knee. Talking with him this morning about his plans, he told me as for him, he is not in the position to go back to Liberia. He is hoping that on day the UN will come and help him go to a third country for asylum. Concerning his health, we have been making some efforts, but he is yet to undergo the surgery. It is one of our most difficult tasks for now. He spends most of his hours during the day laying in his room listening to the music.

The most vulnerable former child soldiers are the FCS which means the female child soldier. Most of them are teen-age mothers, some are caring for two children without a father on the camp. How do they manage with their day to day life? Talking with one them who was a beneficiary on one of our scholarship program, she said due to the hardship in caring for her children’s needs and at the same time going to school was a very difficult task for her.Presentlying she leaves the kids with her landlady and go fetching for money any possible ways she can at night to enable her sustain her kids. She told me that she is already done with her process with the UNHCR for her to go back home. There are many others in such a position.

child soldiering

Born July 23rd, 1979 in Liberia, Grand Bassa County in the township of Lower Handerville unto a family of eleven and a christain, conscripted at a tender age on May 19th 1990 on a rainy Saturday morning by rebels forces, fought for 12years in the Liberian civil war, came to Buduburam Refugees camp in 2003.Presently residing at the Buduburam camp in Ghana.

Presently volunteering with a community base organization at the camp called Veteran Child Soldiers Association of Liberia (VECSAOL).VECSAOL was founded on June 30,2003 due to the re-recruitment of former child soldiers in the Ivorian crisis, a group of former child soldiers came together to educate their brothers and sisters that war was never the solutions to their many problems, but render coming together to speak against child soldiering.

The purpose of the organization is to unite, protect, and advocate for former child soldiers and war affected youths. The goal of the organization is to empower these target groups using rehabilitation and reintegration strategies in order to further peace and the development amongst themselves and the society as a whole.

My personal responsibilities is working directly with former child soldiers and war affected youths, identifying members and integrating them into VECSAOL programmers and projects.

Most of our brothers find it difficult to have their daily activities with resident of the camp or with people who are not former child soldiers, due to that most of them spend their days in the ghetto were they feel they are save and are able to chat with friends who will not think different about them or remind them of the past. Most of them don’t want to be identify because of fear. Fear of the community attitude towards them, and also fear of people who they offended in the past, might get to know there where about and will want to revenge, for instance we have similar situation in the past, where a former child soldier was killed on the camp by the two sons of the man he killed in the war. Most of them do leave camp for Accra were they feel they are more comfortable living among the Ghanaians ,but live there with them are difficult. there daily routine focuses on areas I do called flashpoints, those areas are were they hung around to meet whites or others strangers and beg them for money to survival and most of it do go on drugs. Met one a few days ago, asking him to come on camp to join us for the rehabilitation program, and he told me, there were lots of people on the camp he will not love to see.

Working with both former child soldiers and that of the war affected youths is very much challenneging, cause the war affected youths think we are the cost of them been affected, and we do need them for the process of reintegration.
