Water Conservation

Okay, so I decided I should rant about water conservation now. This is because I am concerned about the prospect of 21st Century "water wars". Being in a country like Canada, I don't want to know what happens when the world supply of water runs too low and countries like China and India run out of water to meet their needs. It's bad enough we are already waging wars over oil. So its time we start to take action on this issue now so as to avoid the same sort of golabal instibility and war over water. Its may seem unpleasant but we need to start conserving water by raising the price in the develped world, especially of bottled water, which just adds more uneeded waste to the environment anyway. Other things we need to do are reduce our household use, install low-flow toilets/showerheads and update our cities water infrastructure. Governments will have to work together to invest money into technology and infrastructure to avert future problems. Also we need to start harnessing our technological abilities to update our irrigation practices and limit our water waste. Othere things we can do are to utilize recycled water for non-drinking purposes. Finally, we can use our technolgical know how to turn salt water into a useable water source. Although I don't know how crazy I am about pumping millions of tons of Ocean from the coasts to use on land. I think the repercussions of such an act must first be studied. There could be environmental costs, especially because the desalinaization process of turning salty water into drinkable water uses a lot of energy and could disrupt the natural environment of the coastal regions...be it the natural habitat or the flow of the Oceans themselves.

Our exciting election!

Okay, so its time for another exciting Federal election in Canada and I don't think I am alone in my sarcastic tone towards yet another election. The problem is this election is just one big waste of money. Money that could be used elsewhere frankly. In this election I can't see much more than Stephen Harper gaining a slightly larger minority government. He may think he is getting a majority, but the Canadian people will likely get scared at the last minute and only give him another minority. As for mister Dion. Well, the only good thing about this election is that the Liberal Party will rid themselves of this man who clearly was not cut out to be in the public spotlight and replace him with someone who is a more effictive presence. Jack Layton may gain some ground in this election, but mostly at the loss of Liberal support, which could give Harper a majority. However, Elizabith May and the Greens may steal some of the NDP's thunder this time around. Frankly I do not like any of these parties or party leaders enough to really support any of them. However, I will vote as it is my right and duty as a Canadian. I only hope whoever wins upholds their duty to protect, serve and better out county instead of using it as their personal playground for corruption. As for the Bloc, they should not even be allowed to be a Federal Party as their plans only really include to seperate Quebec from the rest of the country. What a waste of seats that could be filled by politicians with the good of the whole country at heart.

For me the real issues are the struggling economy, job creation, raising minimum wage, better health care services, ivestment in cities, the environment, more and better aid, inner-city poverty reduction, education including lowering college and university fees, eliminating corporate tax loop holes and giving tax breaks to the lowest income earners and providing a social security blanket for those with mental/physica ldisabilities and low-income families. I realize some of these issues are dealt with at the provincial level, however, the federal government can always support these projects with provincial transfers and federally mandated programs.
