It’s not a game, it’s life

Is it a game of chance or skill? That question runs through my mind as I check my hole cards #8211; pocket aces. Play aggressive to scare off those who might hit a lucky card on the river, or trap my opponents and bilk them for as many chips as possible? I take into consideration the players#8217; stacks around me, their tendency to bluff, the tells that scream I#8217;m not interested in this hand. All signals that contribute to my final calculation#8230; All in.

The poker analogy has been over-used in the game of international politics. Stanley Kubrick insisted that the War Room table in Doctor Strangelove be covered with the green felt used in casinos: he wanted the actors to convey the sense that the fate of the world was nothing more than a game of cards. It seems that Tal Pinchevsky is tired of the connections drawn between poker and politics, and argues that chess should be the metaphor of choice.

On the surface, the argument makes sense. As a leader with an array of pieces at your disposal, there are gambits you can play to control areas of the board, while sacrificing a bishop here so that you can take a queen there. You need to think 5 or 6 moves in advance to have any sort of success. The strategies at play on the 64 squares can easily be transferred to any sphere in life, whether its global diplomacy, business or sports.

Still, the chess analogy feels limiting. As the game progresses, the more likely a specific outcome arises. Each player starts with 16 pieces of varying strength, and through a process of attrition, reduces their ability their respond to moves. Fewer pieces = fewer moves. Obviously good players avoid the scorched earth scenario, but regardless, you move and you respond. End game quickly reveals itself.

Perhaps its my Asian heritage, but I think go works better. You start with a larger playing surface: a clean 19 x 19 grid. Players take turns placing their stones on the 361 intersections. There are a few simple rules, with the basic goal to establish greater territory. The complexity of each game unfolds with maddening precision #8211; each move changes the terrain and increases the number of possible responses. Add the fact that a professional go game can span over several days, it is an excruciatingly difficult game to master.

I#8217;d argue that go represents the game of life more than chess. We start with a clean slate, each action we take representing a stone on the board. The specific placement is based on the thousands of considerations that came before it, and the possible permutations that follow. Our focus may shift from hobby to education to work to leisure, but it#8217;s the sum total of all our experiences that#8217;s more important. Likewise, go players take an extremely long-term view #8211; my play in this area of the board will be a determining factor in the final configuration.

Maybe I#8217;m thinking too hard about the analogies that all manner of games bring to the table. Of course, this is the domain of game theorists, so there must be some credence to all of the thought that they#8217;ve created.

At the end of the day though, isn#8217;t the point of life to have a little bit of fun?

Just going to share some scribbling I took about a week ago:

The 2 Indian men chattered nonstop next to me. As the wafts fragant basmati punctuated by aromatic bursts of garlic naan assaulted my nose, it was their baritone voices that left a deeper impression. You could tell they of an educated ilk #8211; besides the various name dropping of the latest books they#8217;d been reading, and their general disdain for morning television shows, they enunciated their words with almost military precision. It was like listening to captivating radio personalities dueling over the airwaves, jabbing, feinting, bobbing and weaving their words. The content was of no matter: arguing about Israel, the history of German beer, travel restrictions in today#8217;s security conscious era. I was privy to a future that I wanted to find myself in 40 years time. Enjoying a good meal, yakking about anything and everything under the sun. Mental exercises with gastronomic delight.

What’s your media diet?

I came across that question in the current issue of Monocle #8211; and it got me pondering. While we#8217;re very conscious of what we put in our bodies, what about the stuff we upload into our minds? Sure, we count calories but how many of us actually measure the content?

Wired recently posted a neat illustration that divides one#8217;s media intake by type and by time spent. While this methodology recalls the food pyramid we#8217;re taught at a young age, it does beg the question: is this breakdown actually healthy? While we can debate about whether 3.5 hours of entertainment is optimal, I think we need to examine the types of media we consume. To use the food analogy, it#8217;s not only the number of servings of each food group that matters, but also where you#8217;re getting your vitamins, carbs and proteins.

Before knowing how much media to consume, we need to determine what makes a mind healthy. Being able to recall memorized facts doesn#8217;t make you smarter; it#8217;s the contextual application of that information that matters. Accepting everything as truth is also dangerous; an inquisitive mind knows no boundaries and is open to all possibilities. Regardless of the medium, all content is flavoured with bias, slant and spin. Waiter, waiter, what#8217;s this opinion doing in my media soup?

I think that the various media consumption diets you can find online miss the point: it#8217;s not where you get your media, it#8217;s the content that counts. What#8217;s the breakdown between news and opinion from left-wing or right-wing sources? Are you entertained by only Hollywood blockbusters, or do you also enjoy indies, documentaries, and foreign flicks? Are the books you hope read all on a single topic, or are there fiction of all genres, philosophical treatises and gripping biographies?

As you have (hopefully) deciphered by now, I#8217;m of the belief that it#8217;s better for your media diet to be filled with variety. A quick look at my library, iPod, feedreader and delicious account and you could say that mine is eclectic. I would get bored getting fed the same information, day in and day out.

Take a look at your media diet, and if you find things are stale, try something new. A little bit of experimentation will make a world of difference.

My friend and former colleague Kirsten asked me to contribute to her fitness blog, so here#8217;s what I wrote:

When encountering martial arts, most people think of karate or taekwondo, where boys and girls proudly sport their white gis and colourful belts. Or they#8217;ll remember their favourite Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan or Jet Li movie (Chuck Norris and Jean Claude Van Damme will also suffice). What they might not realize though is that martial arts are an excellent way to get into great shape and ultimately live a better life.

That was the main reason why over the last year and a half I#8217;ve been training in Muay Thai, a combative martial art known as “The Art of Eight Limbs.” Also called Thai Kickboxing, Muay Thai practitioners use their hands, elbows, shins and knees as their weapons. If you saw the movie Ong Bak, you have a good idea of how devastating Muay Thai can be!

I train at Old School Muay Thai and we recently moved to a new location near Richmond and Duncan. While some of us want to try out our skills in the ring, the fitness benefits of Muay Thai are undeniable. Here#8217;s a sample workout that I recently did:

30 minute run, about 5 km

10 minutes of skipping rope, with 15-second intervals of speed rope every 45 to 90 seconds

5 minute stretch, from head to toes

45 minutes of plyometric and calisthenic exercises, including:

80 pushups

120 situps/crunches/ab workouts

80 squats and lunges

jumping jacks, knee tucks, bunny hops, burpees etc.

10 minutes of shadow boxing

40 minutes of hitting pads, bags, sparring and other technique exercises

Using a quick online calculator, that workout apparently puts me at a total of about 1500 calories burned#8230; and I try to train at least 3-4 times a week. It#8217;s pretty common knowledge that dedication to any fitness regiment will garner results in time, but I was still pretty amazed to see my belly shrink, extra fat disappear, increased endurance and better muscle definition. I know I#8217;ve got a ways to go before eliminating the beer belly I so diligently worked on during my college years, but I#8217;m confident that Muay Thai will help me do it.

Our gym is great for all skill levels, and particularly for beginners. There are a number of senior students (myself included!) who will help tune your technique and provide motivation during the grueling exercises. We have an all beginners class on Tuesday evenings, while Mondays and Wednesdays are mixed classes. Check out the website for the full schedule.

One final word: don#8217;t be intimidated! The first time I tried out Muay Thai, my entire body was sore for a couple days, but I knew I needed more. I get an adrenaline rush every class, and there#8217;s something very satisfying about hitting a punching bag#8230; especially after a long and stressful day in the office!

It starts in the gut, quickly radiating outwards, down your legs and along your arms at the same time. Creeping up your neck, you hold you breath in anticipation, waiting for the rush. A momentary pause, time stands still, and then like the Norwegian Blue, voom!

Listening to the hockey game on the radio, Irsquo;m completely absorbed in a surreal experiment that engages my imagination. Names and described action fill my imaginary rink as the team wins and loses. Itrsquo;s not quite synaesthesia, but the sounds create a different reality that exists outside of television.

But live, now therersquo;s the rub. The adrenaline takes you higher when the roar of the crowd shakes your very core. The amplifiers thunderous, the mosh pit energetic, the light show fantastic, the body electric. The ringing in your ears echo the experience, keep you coasting just a little bit longer.

Or perhaps you prefer your excitement in a more subdued doses, like an IV drip that sustains a romanticized vision of the perfect relationship, the perfect job, the perfect world. Layer upon layer, we follow the yellow brick road to our deepest desire, constructing the rationale that lets you sleep better at night. This is living, you mutter to yourself.

Live for those moments where you revel in joy. Moments where yoursquo;re left awestruck by fantasy, where you can genuinely smile, for the company of good friends. And live for those moments, where like Icarus, you come crashing down. Cause itrsquo;ll make the trip back to the top, that much more satisfying.

Accuse me of hyperbole, but thatrsquo;s the bottom line with Battlestar Galactica and 100 Bullets. I stand before you accused of being a nerd, evidenced by my consumption of comic books and sci-fi. I humbly plead guilty.

To quickly catch up those in the dark: BSG is a sci-fi TV show that starts off with humanity facing extinction at the hands of their robotic creations. When looking into the deep dark eyes of Despair, how would we respond? The show has been heralded for its commentary on contemporary polarizing issues – the motivations of suicide bombers, the uneasy alliance between religion, military and government, or the hatred that fuels blatant racial discrimination. Producer Ron D. Moore presented such a nuanced view on what drives people to act in desperate situations that he (along with some of the cast) recently shared their opinions at the United Nations.

100 Bullets is a comic book series that began with a simple premise: if yoursquo;ve been wronged and have irrefutable proof that someone was responsible, what would you do with a gun, 100 rounds of ammunition and carte blanche? If a mysterious man gave you absolute power and control over someonersquo;s life, what would you do? Writer Brian Azzarello and artist Eduardo Risso takes this concept and sends the reader spiralling into a shady world of conspiracies, crime families and shifting morals. A hundred issues later, a complicated story leaves me wondering about responsibility, the consequences of your actions and the notion the true colour of society is grey.

I really wanted to write about how sinking your teeth into either of these long-running serials will shatter your perceptions on the potential of sci-fi and comic books, about the unique ability of a storyteller to create fictional worlds that exist on the edge of reality, of the communities that sprout and inject new layers of understanding and knowledge. Irsquo;ve got pages of half-started thoughts and unfinished sentences as I struggle to extract some deeper meaning about the media that I have spent days of my life reading, watching and analyzing.

But you know what, sometimes a TV show about a rag-tag space fleet and a comic book about revenge just entertains, allowing you to escape into the mindscape of master craftsmen. At the end of the day, itrsquo;s really about losing yourself in some serious storytelling.

My previous post ended with the question ldquo; So what does the digital medium give us?rdquo; Based on the continuum Okrent proposes, I believe it gives you a pulse on reality.

I think this becomes clearer when we try to answer the other question cited, ldquo;Whatrsquo;s the definition of the news they want?rdquo;

Basically, news is recent historical information that contains two components: facts and analysis. The facts are descriptions of events: gang violence leaves 4 dead, Les Habs win the Cup, President speaks at global forum etc. Facts are the basic ingredients; analysis is what gives each recipe its unique flavour. Analysis addresses the age-old question: ldquo; Why?rdquo; Connections between the facts uncovers a deeper meaning. Motivations of the actors involved laid bare provides perspective.

The traditional model to deliver news relied on a broadcast system where the flow of information went from the select few to the mass public. The newspapers amp; magazines, TV amp; radio stations controlled the information we consumed. They provide just one perspective - their analysis of the facts.

Whatrsquo;s important to understand is that analysis is the means to comprehend reality. Facts + Analysis = Understanding; understanding of the world, of the way people are, of what makes us tick. And the very act of consuming the ldquo;newsrdquo; is an act of analysis itself. By accepting their analysis as another piece of information, it transforms into a fact, which becomes a part of my personal analysis. I can draw my conclusions based on the conclusions of the reporter.

Furthermore, what the Internet and digital media has done is eliminated the barrier between the few who possessed the means to provide news, and the many who wanted to consume. All of sudden, the facts are being collected via cellphone cameras, Twitter, and Google Earth, while anyone can provide analysis (this blog is proof enough).

Consequently, therersquo;s a smorgasbord of information available for each of us to paint a picture of how we perceive reality. Irsquo;m continually constructing a paradigm to understand the world, modifying my equation with new pieces of information that challenge or confirm. Each of us doing this: creating our understanding of reality. Mine is no more right than yours, because my analysis is based on all of the facts I have encountered, which are different from all of the facts you have encountered.

Reality is the collective analysis that wersquo;re conducting. Information is the blood that circulates the system of human experience, capturing our knowledge and understanding, and when digitized is stored in the ether of the Internet.

Thatrsquo;s the pulse of reality. Itrsquo;s the heartbeat of the system called society.

We want informationhellip; informationhellip; information.

So herersquo;s the scene: Irsquo;m sitting in a cafe in Kuala Lumpurrsquo;s airport last summer, waiting for my flight to Bangkok, and Irsquo;m reading William Powersrsquo; essay Hamletrsquo;s Blackberry: Why Paper is Eternal which dives into the numerous reasons why paper continues to have a firm grip on how we experience information. Of course, Irsquo;m flipping through this 75-page PDF on my laptop. Go figure.

Fast forward to a couple of days ago, Irsquo;m scanning the CBC mobile site on my iPod Touch when this headline pops out: ldquo;Print industry to worsen before any improvements: experts.rdquo; The train of thought that Powers had started in his piece continues here: while the tangible nature of paper is what allows us to focus solely on the information presented to us, it is fast becoming a less viable medium for newspapers, whose struggles are only more exacerbated with the overall economic downturn wersquo;re experiencing. The death knells are tolling louder.

A comment that stuck out for me came from Toronto Star publisher John Cruickshank who asks ldquo; The issue, it seems to me, is not so much lsquo;Do people want newspapers?rsquo; as lsquo;Do they want news?rsquo; and lsquo;Whatrsquo;s the definition of the news they want?rsquo;rdquo; A similar sentiment was echoed in David Carrrsquo;s column in the New York Times in January, as he calls for an iTunes for news. Which is what Amazonrsquo;s Kindle 2 is supposed to achievehellip;eventually.

But I want to dig deeper into the 2 questions that Cruickshank raises, which I think are central to the existential dilemma that the media (used in its broadest sense) faces every morning as it stares with haggard eyes into the bathroom mirror. The first is easy to answer in my opinion: yes, people want news. Wersquo;ve been collectively fed a steady diet of whatrsquo;s the latest breaking thing to hit the airwaves and streets. Wersquo;ve accustomed ourselves to accept this idea that with tomorrowrsquo;s dawn, something new will be waiting for us - shoes, video games, news.

Essentially what wersquo;re craving for is information - in whatever shape, size or colour it arrives in. And thatrsquo;s why the second question is a tougher nut to crack, and deserves a blog post all of its own. But Irsquo;ll leave you with a beautiful line to ponder from Daniel Okrentrsquo;s Digital Journalist editorial from February 200, titled The Death of Print?:

ldquo;A newspaper gives you timeliness, a magazine perspective, a book lasting value. ldquo;

So what does the digital medium give us?

Oh my god, Irsquo;m back againhellip;and Irsquo;ll do my best to keep the pop culture references to a bare minimum. So much has happened since we last danced, so Irsquo;ll try to keep pace with all of this change.

I attended Volunteer Torontorsquo;s free screening of Us Now, a quaint UK documentary about the effectiveness of the latest iteration of mob rule thru technology - crowd sourcing. Collective decision making and moderation by a community of like-minded individuals are demonstrated to have some measure of success, so naturally, can the same work for government?

I use the word ldquo;quaintrdquo; because of the inherent failure of documentaries trying to capture the new, fast paced media of online social networking tools. Itrsquo;s like pre-fab Top 40 pop songs - it has a hook that pulls you in slightly, but you quickly realize that therersquo;s not enough substance, not enough meat to sink your teeth into. Like Heraclitusrsquo; river, things are constantly changing and itrsquo;s nigh impossible to adequately capture the zeitgeist of the information age in an antiquated media format.

(Disclaimer: I love documentaries as an art form, but they work best for me when Irsquo;m detached from the subject matter, or have at least a superficial understanding of the topic. Like base jumping, Antarctica, or Iranrsquo;s underground culture.)

But back to the question: are we ready for the beta launch of Government 2.0? Don Tapscott certainly thinks so, but where I differ from him is that social media doesnrsquo;t put it within reach. In order for a reality where every citizen places value in their ability to contribute to decision-making, we need to upgrade the operating system. Irsquo;m talking about a full blown, rewriting of the basic underlying software that governs our social interactions.

Our code is buggy, a patchwork of faulty logic covered up with security updates, where inputs rarely result in the right output and where hackers are gaming the system. Irsquo;m no programmer, but I see the system we have now akin to the Windows OS - it works just enough so that everyone who uses it is mildly satisfied.

Itrsquo;s here that I agree the basic argument that the film makes - that trust in your peers is the building block for smart decisions that place the common good above the individual. I trust that your contribution is a sensible one, that yoursquo;ve based it on measured thinking and your thought through the eventual impact of your actions. By thinking of everyone, I help myself.

A new social contract has to be written, to reshape our attitude towards one another. Once that is done, only then can we begin the Government 2.0 project. And it is possible - in the world of capitalism, thinkers like Peter Barnes and Umair Haque are charting out a roadmap that might haul us out of the quagmire we find ourselves in. The application may be slightly different, but the sentiment is still the same - the rules are changing, and if we donrsquo;t respond in kind, humanity = FAIL.

I find myself reflecting on one of my favourite seminars at McGill - History and Memory. Unfortunately, I seem to have misplaced my notes, so itrsquo;s apt that Irsquo;m pulling the cobwebs to remind myself of the power of memory and how it impacts our study and understanding of history. About how our individual and collective recognition of events distorts or perhaps improves the truth. About how we selectively censor specific happenings, or inflate the importance of others.

Remember, remember the fifth of November - the little ditty once used to ldquo;celebraterdquo; the failed efforts of home-grown religious-fueled terrorism will have its meaning modified in 2008, where one man could wake up with the satisfaction of changing the legacy of the 43 individuals before him. Will this date be marked in the annals of our own memory? Where we were when Kennedy was shot, when Canada won hockey gold? Will some iconic image resonate so deeply as it did on 9/11, when the Berlin Wall crumbled, at Tiananmen?

And if a specific individual does win, I have the suspicion that the porcelain mask of Fawkes might become more en vogue as a form of protest, especially if people had the notion reenact a certain scene only found in the movie adaptation of V for Vendetta. The parallels drawn between Alan Moorersquo;s original story (itself a reflection of Thatcherrsquo;s policies) and todayrsquo;s world are a stretch at best, but no doubt the sentiment and attraction for anarchy will be sown, especially if this election is suspected of being stolen.

Regardless of who wins, my only hope is for record turnout at the polls come Tuesday. It canrsquo;t get any worse than the pathetic showing we had here only a few weeks back! Oh, and the only other thing I wish for is that the winner does not play this as a victory song. Please?

This is for an episode of a documentary series on Digital Natives that is to air in Japan in September. In the meantime, you can see the website here: http://www.nhk.or.jp/digitalnative/en.html.

They're also asking if TIG members can submit their own videos on their opinions about technology, the Internet and how it can make a positive impact in the world - if you have something to say, record it and upload here!

I've had some time now to digest my travels to Ljubljana, Slovenia; I was recently there for the OECD's International Workshop on Open Inclusive Policy Making. TakingITGlobal conducted an e-consultation on Climate Change Building Citizen Centred Policies Services.

I want to thank all of the participants who gave their views and opinions on these 2 important themes - and especially Vidar and PJ who coordinated the consultations. When I presented your thoughts at the Workshop, all of the delegates were deeply interested and reacted positively to what you said. I found that there were a number of civil servants who already recognized that engaging young people is an important component of reaching out with their citizens. I also heard a lot of innovative ideas and projects that governments were experimenting with.

Still, there was a recognition that more political will and resources are needed to make sure that these efforts are supported. One of the main points that I stressed is that governments need to include young people at all levels of the public policy development process. Additionally, having youth civil servants is also a good step - and listening to your ideas will definitely help transform government.

I want to invite you to read the full report that I presented - you can download it here.

I also had a chance to take in some of the sights of Ljubljana and I must say, it was very pleasant to roam around the streets of a small, yet cosmopolitan city. I really appreciated the history that you can clearly see in the buildings and the layout of the city. The neat thing was the emphasis on dragons - St. George is the patron saint and you can see that everywhere.

Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to head out to Bled lake or Skocjan caves, but hopefully I can make another trip in the future to check them out!!

Actually, it's only 2 "Wells" - Malcolm Gladwell and Mark Kingwell, who was speaking at the Well Well event (A Dialogue on Social Change) @ U of T that I just attended.

A few quick thoughts:

a) always bring a pen...I forgot mine and thus am relying on my memory...but a friend of mine took notes, so I'll be able to crib off her and provide more indepth analysis later this week.

b) Gladwell talked about putting action before awareness - that raising awareness amounts to advertising - sure we may get our message across, but if no-one is actually changing their behaviour, then what difference does all that energy expended make? He cited how forcing children under the age of 5 to wear seatbelts was a subversive way of getting adults to buckle up, raising the percentage of seatbelt use from 15% to 70%. On the flip side, he also talked how Al Gore - who could arguably have been the 2nd most powerful person in the world for 8 years - could have actually done something about climate change, but only after out of the power does he become a campaigner for the cause. What it boils down to is that awareness and talk only do so much, and that at the end of the day, social change comes with actions being taken.

c) Kingwell, on the other hand, took the stance that social change happens because we share a space of empathy between those who need help. He used the conversion story of Paul the Apostle as a way to illustrate that social change relies on the connection one can make with another being. Where the doctrine of "Love thy neighbour like thyself" should first and foremost be the driving force for change. Where caring about others is what compels you to reach out and help your fellow human being.

d) Watching the interplay between a journalist (Gladwell) and philosopher/journalist (Kingwell) can be entertaining. However, while both playfully threw barbs and derided their counterparts profession, I would suggest that journalists and philosophers both play the same role of describing the world, with different levels of language. One does so relying on facts, everyday occurrences and reportage; the other drills down and employs a "higher" plane of thinking, extrapolating from instances.

e) Couple of other topics thrown out - Bill Gates, the role of money, the role of journalists, changing governments...

A Marx quote used to kick start the whole evening serves as a great summation: “The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point, however, is to change it.” The point of TIG is to change the world - it's the actions that we all take together that allow more people to be aware of the problems in the world and the solutions that are being used to address them.

Hopefully I'll get more notes to share what else was discussed tonight!

Read this brief abstract on Allison Fine's study on young people and how they are becoming civically engaged and involved in society. One of the means is through technology! Sounds familiar?

As a Millenial/Gen Yer/N-Gener myself, I certainly feel that collectively, we're standing at the brink of a momentous period. With the internet ubiquitous and an ever-present factor in our lives, young people are constantly uploading themselves into this nebulous cloud of information. We're reaching the end of the first decade of the 21st century, and already its zoomed by so fast.

But at the same time, as the world is getting faster, young people are saying: SLOW DOWN! Slow down and take a moment to examine the world around you - a world that is hurting, in pain and needs a helping hand. You're on TIG because you've recognized that you have the ability to make a difference!

Technology is being applied in so many different sectors and areas - and the non-profit social justice movement is no different. Social networking has great great power to induce change - the challenge is what you need to do once you have that power....

Apart from the content (since I'm always keen on learning new marketing strategies, particularly from a socially conscious perspective), I'm very intrigued in the structure that this is potentially a FREE event!!

Much like the Radiohead and NIN "free" music experiments, the facilitator is asking people to pay what they feel the 3-day course is worth after you have completed.

I wonder if this model could be used for other products services? At this point, the reason I think this works for music/knowledge is that for all intents and purposes, the product that you're buying doesn't exist in the tangible, traditional sense. It's not like we're buying a burger, that we would consume, and thereafter, it would cease to exist. No, with music you have the liberty of stopping, rewinding, fastforwarding, or even remixing. Same thing with knowledge - you can apply the lessons learned in the manner that you feel appropriate.

Which brings me to a question: if you had to pay to use TakingITGlobal after a week/month of usage, what would you pay?

Okay, okay - I admit that we have another 5 months until August swings by, but as the saying goes: the early bird catches the worm...

I mentioned in my first post of 2008 that TIG is involved in 2 major international events, so here's some quick info to get up to speed on what they are, and how TIG is involved:

Regeneration 2008: 4th World Youth Congress
August 10 to 21
Quebec City, QC, Canada
The World Youth Congress (WYC) is an international gathering of youth leaders, who are making a positive impact in their local communities. They are deeply involved with youth-led community improvement - running action projects that make a real difference. In Quebec City, they will have the chance to celebrate their achievements and learn from each other in an open and inclusive environment. TIG is partnered with Congres Mondial des Jeunes and Peace Child International to organize the Congress. You can find out more about the Congress and the planned activities here.

I'm personally excited about this, as it will be my first trip to Quebec City, and I'm looking forward to meeting as many young activists and leaders as possible. You guys are truly inspirational!!

Update: We're having a live chat event on Friday April 4 at 10:00 am EST - where you can ask us questions about the event and hopefully learn more about what we plan on doing! Hope you can join us - I'll be on the panel.

XVII International AIDS Conference
August 3 to 8
Mexico City, Mexico
TIG is involved with the Mexico YouthForce - the same thing that we did in 2006 in Toronto. We're hoping for 2000 youth delegates to be in Mexico City this year, to advocate the youth position and present the youth perspective to the assembled diplomats, health workers, policy makers and every influential person in attendance. If you're looking to get involved this year, check out the Youth Site link and learn more about what you can do to take action around this important conference!

Unfortunately, I won't be attending this conference, but some of my TIG colleagues will be - so if you happen to be there - make sure to say hi!!

Until next time.....

Not red, blue or orange, but green. Green as in the philosophy exemplified by the recently coined movement bright green environmentalism. Green as in the subtle highlights of Chris Tindalrsquo;s website/blog.

Oh yeah - Irsquo;m voting Green in the upcoming federal by-elections next Monday. Tindal has my vote not only because Irsquo;ve come to realize how ridiculously obvious his platform makes sense, but because he seems to present a certain air of confidence, humility and intelligence that I havenrsquo;t seen in a federal election candidate.

Bob Rae exhibited that decades in the political establishment can result in a well-spoken, well-oiled political machine; Don Meredithrsquo;s difficulty in distinguishing himself from Harper shed light on one failing of our parliamentary system; El-Farou Khaki proved that even with the right background and smarts, showmanship is the name of the game.

But Chris (who I had already seen in action at a University of Toronto young leaders debate for the Ontario Provincial election) presented his position and views clearly, threw in a self-deprecating remark or two, remained above the muck-slinging one might have expected in a political debate and earned the loudest applause from the crowd. At least that was my takehellip;

One last thing: what is up with cantankerous old people? Maybe Irsquo;m not cynical enough, I havenrsquo;t had my dreams shattered, or I donrsquo;t rely on the government for many things, but the number of angry comments, venomous spittle and all manner of viciousness that was thrown at the Grits and Tories was shocking. A little bit of decorum and respect pleasehellip;at least the candidates took it all in stride. Most of them were probably used to it by now.

So in closing: if yoursquo;re in a riding that is up for a by-election on March 17, I encourage you to get out and vote. Irsquo;ll probably have more thoughts on this wicked little game called politics as the year carries on, especially with the circus thatrsquo;s happening south of the border.

Stay tunedhellip;
