The USAID Health Policy Initiative, Task Order 1, is implementing an important training event to build the capacity of women leaders to reinvigorate family planning/reproducti ve health (FP/RH) programs, funding and policies within their communities and countries.

The initiative will conduct WomenLead in Repositioning Reproductive Health on September 7 - 25, 2009, in Washington, D.C. WomenLead, a training program designed by CEDPA, is intended for early to mid-career women currently working to promote quality, gender sensitive reproductive health programs in civil society, government and political sectors. The workshop will provide participants with cutting edge technical updates; training on leadership, advocacy, and strategic communication; and opportunities to add their voices to the public dialogue on family planning and reproductive health.

This letter is being sent to request your help in getting the WomenLead announcement and application into the hands of qualified women who have the passion and the capacity to give voice to FP/RH policy dialogue at all levels. Please share the application with your networks, partner organizations, and donor agencies to ensure that we reach as wide an audience as possible and find the next generation of FP/RH champions. Applications are limited to the following priority countries: Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Haiti, India (U.P.) and Pakistan.

The Health Policy Initiative will receive and review the applications and award 20 scholarships that cover tuition, hotel, meal allowance, US-based travel and medical insurance. Applicants are asked to secure local funding to cover the cost of their international travel. The World AIDS Campaign calls for Youth Observers (15-29 years old) to the upcoming meeting of the UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board (PCB).

Observers have an important role to increase the engagement and access of young people to the PCB. This is a great opportunity to learn about the proceedings of the PCB, and to report back your learnings to your community.

The World AIDS Campaign will cover the costs for travel and stay. In return, you are asked to write a report on the proceedings from your community, and to share your learnings with them. The deadline for applications is May 28th.

Follow-up workshop: December 2009

Why this course?: Access to affordable medicines of high quality is of particular concern to developing countries. After the implementation of the TRIPS Agreement by developing countries in 2005, accessibility is at stake because of the restrictions this entails for generic production in countries like India, China, or Brazil. Local production in least developed countries (LDCs), which are not obliged to comply with certain TRIPS provisions before 2016, is therefore of growing importance. This implies that the legal framework in developing countries and LDCs needs to be amended to make use of TRIPS flexibilities for the promotion of access to medicines in those regions.


Aim: The capacity building course “Flexibilities of the TRIPS Agreement” is geared towards subject matter experts and decision makers from ministries, governmental institutions, NGOs and local pharmaceutical industry. The program equips participants with the necessary tools and knowledge to successfully utilise (and advocate) the flexibilities presented by the WTO TRIPS Agreement towards pharmaceutical production and other means to promote access to medicines in their countries or regions. This course builds on other related activities by UNCTAD and InWEnt.


Target Group: Experts and decision makers from national ministries, government institutions, non-governmental institutions and commercial enterprises from the pharmaceutical sector who serve as multipliers in their field. Invited are participants from Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Vietnam.


Content: Subsequent to a short introduction to the WTO TRIPS flexibilities, the online course will cover the following subject matter structured in five modules:

Compulsory Licenses (Module 3)
*
Protection of Pharmaceutical Test Data (Module 4)

Negotiation Skills (Module 5)

develop a comprehensive understanding of TRIPS flexibilities relevant to building local and regional pharmaceutical production and to improving access to high quality, affordable
medicines in developing countries

recognise the intellectual property dimensions of health, trade/investment and related
issues
*
create a network of regional stakeholders for policy discussion and creation
*
identify suitable policy options on the national, regional and international level to
make full use of the TRIPS flexibilities
*
transfer their knowledge to implement initiatives that improve access to medicines, industry and trade policies as well as industrial capacities for sustainable development
*
act as multipliers for other key stakeholders in their countries.


Structure of the e-learning course
A three-day introductory workshop in Hanoi Vietnam, will precede the start of the course. During the workshop participants will have the chance to familiarise themselves with the online environment and the various communication tools. At the same time they will get to know each other as well as the course tutors.

The e-learning phase is then comprised of five modules, which are to be completed consecutively. Participants will only gain access to a module once the preceding one has been completed. Average time for studying will be approximately 10- 12 hrs per module for the duration of the course (approximately 50-60 hrs) over a period of four months.

Following the online phase, a five-day follow-up workshop will be conducted in South East Asia in December 2009.



Learning Methods
The course follows a blended learning approach, with the online modules being complemented by
the face-to-face seminars. The entire course will be supported by tutors, who will be in direct contact with the participants throughout the modules, and who will be able to direct participants' questions to experts as needed. The continuous interaction amongst participants themselves, as well as between the participants, tutors and other experts is an integral part of the course's design. There are several tools available on the Global Campus 21 learning platform that enable interaction, communication and co-operation. They include a chat room, a pin board for posting information of general interest, a document pool for exchanging completed material and asynchronous discussion tools.


Prerequisites
The face-to-face seminar as well as the e-learning phase will be held in English. In order to read the course materials, write study assignments and participate in discussions, participants need a very good command of the English language. This should be demonstrated by previous attendance of seminars, lectures or conferences held in English. The participants need to have internet access at least three times a week in order to participate in discussions (chats) and download course materials. The online time can be reduced by partly working offline with the CD-ROM of the course.

Terms of Attendance
A maximum number of 30 participants from the region can be accepted for the online course. Final official invitations will be issued to accepted applicants through InWEnt Bonn. The aim is to form interdisclinary teams from each country. Participants who have successfully taken part in the e-learning phase are eligible to join the follow-up workshop. InWEnt will provide full board accommodation during the introductory and follow-up workshops seminar in Asia for all attendees and will cover local travel costs. Travel expenses to and from the seminar are supposed to be met by the participants or sending organisations as a contribution towards the advanced training. Exceptions (sponsorship) may be made at the discretion of InWEnt. Travelling arrangements will be made by the participants themselves or in case of sponsorship by InWEnt. Expenses will be reimbursed by InWEnt only on approval and presentation of original receipts. Any other additional costs need to be covered by the participants. It is recommended to bring sufficient extra money for personal expenses.

During the workshops the participants are covered by insurance for emergency care and accidents. This insurance does not include travel insurance, though, or costs of visa, medical examinations or any loss or damage of personal belongings.

After the successful completion of the follow-up workshop participants will receive a certificate from InWEnt/ UNCTAD.

Theme: The Right Climate for Confronting Climate Change?

The new United States presidential administration of Barack Obama has increased attention to climate change in advance of the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference to be held in December. With this backdrop, the Fall 2009 Jefferson Fellowships program will explore the ability of U.S. domestic and foreign policy to confront the important economic challenges and opportunities involved in addressing climate change and its consequences. While near-term costs may affect the livelihoods of Americans already struggling in the current U.S. recession, addressing climate change also presents opportunities to strengthen important parts of the economy and create jobs. In addition, the Fall 2009 program will examine how the issue of climate change may serve as a way for the United States to rebuild partnerships and alliances around the world and to bolster national security.

The program will begin in Honolulu with one week of discussions, field visits and participant presentations that explore the challenge of climate change throughout the Asia Pacific-U.S. region. Participants will share impacts, responses and policy challenges from the perspectives of their own countries. The study tour will focus on policy challenges and opportunities for the United States through visits to key destinations on the U.S. mainland.

Study Tour Destinations: Monterey and Palo Alto, California; Boulder, Colorado; Washington, DC

Who Can Apply: Working print, broadcast, and online journalists in the United States, the Pacific Islands, and Asia with a minimum of five years of professional experience. Applicants must have the ability to communicate in English in a professional, multi-cultural environment.

Funding: The Jefferson Fellowships are supported from a grant from The Freeman Foundation. The grant funds economy class, roundtrip airfare to and from Honolulu, Hawaii as well as program-related air and ground transportation, lodging, and meals for participating journalists. A modest per diem is also provided. Participants are responsible for all applicable visa fees and any additional visa-related expenses.

News organizations are also asked to support their employees' participation by cost-sharing whenever possible. An "Employers Statement of Support" is a required part of the application. What are the aims?
Its aim is to permit Medicine students to contact with Assisted
Reproduction Medicine and to promote cultural exchange.This project has
roots in a similar project, started two years ago, only for Portuguese
students. It was successful and very appreciated by people who
participated, so last year we decided to open it to international
students. It was also successful so we are organizing it again!


What it consists in?
The
Practice in Assisted Reproduction consists in a one month clerkship in
an Assisted Reproduction Medicine Ward in Portugal, spent at the
outpatient clinic and at the laboratory.

When can you apply?
The period for submitting applications are from 4th to the 24th May, so make sure you start preparing your CVs and motivation letters and that you regularly visit the website (www.anem.pt) , as more information will be provided soon, like the vacancies and the application rules. The Global Forum for Health Research and The Lancet are sponsoring their fourth joint essay competition with the theme Innovating for the health of all, held in conjunction with Forum 2009, the annual meeting of the Global Forum that takes place in Havana, Cuba, from 16 to 20 November.
The Global Forum's vision is of a world in which the potential of research and innovation is fully utilized to address the health problems of the poor. Innovation is defined as the creation, development and implementation of a new product, process or service, with the aim of improving efficiency, effectiveness or competitive advantage. Research for health therefore goes far beyond medicine and biology, to include sectors such as economics, environment, politics, sociology and others. Innovating for the health of all involves both social and technological innovation
Within the broad range of the theme, essays are invited from young professionals working in or interested in the wide spectrum of research for health and health equity.
Eligibility

Authors must have been born on or after 1 January 1979.
The competition is open to young people from all disciplines (for instance, social sciences and humanities, engineering, environment, nutrition, health, etc.) and backgrounds (such as academia, NGO, private sector, social entrepreneur, etc.).
Rules and guidelines

Each author may submit one essay only.
Essays may be submitted in English, French or Spanish and should be 1500 words maximum.
Essays must be based on the author’s own ideas and not be derived from another source.
Essays must not have been previously published.
Entries are individual (i.e., the work of a single author).
They should include original, even provocative ideas and not be technical or academic texts: tables, charts and figures are probably not necessary; references should be limited.
Authors are free to be idealistic, passionate, to take established practices to task, albeit in a constructive fashion.
Within the context of research for health, the theme Innovating for the health of all allows authors to include any aspect that interests them particularly.
Deadlines


The deadline for receipt of entries is 13 May 2009.
A shortlist will be announced by the end of June. Shortlisted authors will be asked to provide a print-quality photograph and to confirm original authorship and date of birth.
The winners will be notified by the beginning of August 2009. The judges’ decision will be final.
Prizes

A selection of shortlisted essays will be published in an anthology as well as on the Global Forum and Lancet websites.
Winners will be invited to take part (with all expenses paid) in Forum 2009. the annual meeting of the Global Forum for Health Research, which will take place in Havana, Cuba, from 16 to 20 November 2009.
Staff members of the Global Forum or of the Lancet or their immediate families are ineligible to enter the competition, as are authors of commended and winning entries from previous years.

Quality assurance in clinical care and bridging the know-do
gap using evidence-based medicine, taking into account the specific context of low- and middle-income countries, is a neglected field of science.

The Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp wishes to contribute to filling this gap by offering a 6-week ands-on training in research skills and evidence-based medicine. This short course targets mainly clinicians engaged in clinical research, in development of guidelines and/or in teaching/coaching students in this domain. A minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience is required as well as basic knowledge of statistics> and epidemiology. The course can be followed as a stand-alone training or as an advanced module of a flexible Master in International Health (with a focus on clinical sciences).

We are pleased to inform you that the first session of the short course on clinical research and evidence-based medicine (SCREM) which took place from 10 November to 19 December 2008 was a success.

This year the course will run from 2 November till 11 December 2009. English will be the course language. However, we are still considering organising SCREM workshops in French as well as in Spanish in the near future.

Course applications are to be submitted to the course
secretariat before the 1st of May. The tuition fee is 3.000 Euro. Scholarships (covering all expenses) are available for candidates from low-and middle-income countries.

I was born as a son of a poor family.
Even for eating, we often got lack of food.
Whenever the time for eating, mother often gave me her portion of rice.
While she was removing her rice into my bowl,
she would say "Eat this rice, son. I'm not hungry".
That was Mother's First Lie.

2.When I was getting to grow up,
the persevering mother gave her spare time for fishing in a river near our house,
she hoped that from the fishes she got,
she could gave me a little bit nutritious food for my growth.

After fishing, she would cook the fishes to be a fresh fish soup,which raised my appetite. While I was eating the soup,
mother would sit beside me and eat the rest meat of fish,
which was still on the bone of the fish I ate.

My heart was touched when I saw it.
I then used my chopstick and gave the other fish to her.
But she immediately refused it and said "Eat this fish, son.
I don't really like fish."
That was Mother's Second Lie.

3.Then, when I was in Junior High School,
to fund my study,mother went to an economic enterprise to bring some used-matches boxes that would be stuck in.
It gave her some money for covering our needs.
As the winter came,I woke up from my sleep and looked at my mother who was still awoke,supported by a little candlelight and within her perseverance she continued
the work of sticking some used-matches box.

I said, "Mother, go to sleep, it's late,
tomorrow morning you still have to go for work.
" Mother smiled and said "Go to sleep,dear. I'm not tired."
That was Mother's Third Lie.

4. At the time of final term,
mother asked for a leave from her work in order to accompany me.While the daytime was coming and the heat of the sun was starting to shine,the strong and persevering mother waited for me under the heat of the sun's shine for several hours.

As the bell rang, which indicated that the final exam had finished, mother immediately welcomed me and poured me a glass of tea that she had prepared before in a cold bottle..
The very thick tea was not as thick as my mother's love,
which was much thicker. Seeing my mother covering with perspiration,I at once gave her my glass and asked her to drink too.

Mother said "Drink, son. I'm not thirsty!".
That was Mother's Fourth Lie.

5. After the death of my father because of illness,
my poor mother had to play her role as a single parent.
By held on her former job, she had to fund our needs alone.
Our family's life was more complicated. No days without sufferance.

Seeing our family's condition that was getting worse,
there was a nice uncle who lived near my house came to help us,either in a big problem and a small problem.
Our other neighbors who lived next to us saw that our family's life was so unfortunate, they often advised my mother to marry again. But mother, who was stubborn, didn't care to their advice, she said "I don't need love.."
That was Mother's Fifth Lie.

6. After I had finished my study and then got a job,
it was the time for my old mother to retire.
But she didn't want to; she was sincere to go to the marketplace every morning,

just to sell some vegetable for fulfilling her needs.
I, who worked in the other city, often sent her some money to help her in fulfilling her needs, but she was stubborn for not accepting the money.

She even sent the money back to me.
She said "I have enough money."
That was Mother's Sixth Lie.

7. After graduated from Bachelor Degree,
I then continued my study to Master Degree.
I took the degree, which was funded by a company through a scholarship program, from a famous University in America .
I finally worked in the company. Within a quite high salary,
I intended to take my mother to enjoy her life in America .
But my lovely mother didn't want to bother her son,
she said to me "I'm not used to."
That was Mother's Seventh Lie.

8. After entering her old age,
mother got a flank cancer and had to be hospitalized.
I, who lived in miles away and across the ocean,
directly went home to visit my dearest mother.
She lied down in weakness on her bed after having an operation.

Mother, who looked so old, was staring at me in deep yearn.
She tried to spread her smile on her face;
even it looked so stiff because of the disease she held out.
It was clear enough to see how the disease broke my mother's body, thus she looked so weak and thin. I stared at my mother within tears flowing on my face.

My heart was hurt, so hurt, seeing my mother on that condition. But mother, with her strength, said "Don't cry, my dear. I'm not in pain."
That was Mother's Eight Lie

The Dag Hammarskjöld Scholarship Fund for Journalists is now accepting applications from professional journalists from developing countries for its Fellowship Program.

The Fellowships are available to radio, television, print and web journalists, age 25 to 35, from developing countries who are interested in coming to New York to report on international affairs during the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The Fellowships will begin in mid-September and extend to late November and will include the cost of travel and accommodations in New York, as well as a per diem allowance.

The Fellowship Program is open to journalists who are native to one of the developing countries in Africa, Asia, South America and the Caribbean, and are currently working full-time for a bona fide media organization in a developing nation. Applicants must demonstrate an interest in and commitment to international affairs and to conveying a better understanding of the United Nations to their readers and audiences. They must also have approval from their media organizations to spend up to two months in New York to report from the United Nations.

The journalists who are awarded Fellowships are given the incomparable opportunity to observe international diplomatic deliberations at the United Nations, to make professional contacts that will serve them for many years to come, to interact with seasoned journalists from around the world, and to gain a broader perspective and understanding of matters of global concern. Many past Fellows have risen to prominence in their professional and countries.

This is the 48th year the Dag Hammarskjöld Scholarship Fund has sponsored the Fellowship Program for Journalists. The program is administered on a volunteer basis by journalists at the United Nations, who raise money from foundations, corporations and diplomatic missions.

Eligibility
Applicants must demonstrate an interest in and commitment to international affairs and to conveying a better understanding of the United Nations to their readers and audiences.
The Dag Hammarskjöld Journalism Fellowship is open to individuals who:

*Are native of one of the developing countries of Africa, Asia, South America or the Caribbean.
*Currently live in and write for a publication in their native country.
*Are between the ages of 25 and 35.
*Have a good to excellent command of the English language.
*Are currently employed full-time as professional journalists for bona fide print, television, radio or internet media organizations.
*Have approval from their media organizations to spend up to three months in New York reporting from the United Nations.
*Receive a commitment from their media organizations that the reports they file during the term of the Fellowship will be used.

Documentation Requirements
Please include all of the following documents with your signed application. Applications WITHOUT the following documents will NOT be considered.

1.Copies of representative selections of your work, such as newspaper clippings, audio tapes, or video tapes.
a. For newspaper clippings, include an English translation. b. For audio tape and video tape submissions, include a written English transcription.
2.Photocopies of diplomas or certificates received from educational institution(s) that you attended. Include certificates received from journalism training organizations, if appropriate.
3.An originally signed letter from a person of good standing in your community or profession who can testify to your character, such as a community, religious or business leader, teacher, former or current co-worker.
4.Originally signed letters from two individuals who supervised you and can comment on your journalism experience and qualifications.
5.Endorsement of the Fellowship application from the editor or director of the news organization that presently employs you. This endorsement must be originally signed and should:
a. Grants you a leave of absence from your current duties in the event you are awarded a Fellowship. b. States 1) plans for using the material prepared by you during the Fellowship, and 2) the arrangements made to file your reports while you are at the United Nations and in New York.c. Sets forth the plans for you upon completion of the Fellowship and your return from New York.d. NOTE: Applicants and/or their employers are required to provide equipment necessary for the applicants to efficiently and effectively report from the United Nations. Such equipment should include a laptop or notebook computer, digital camera (if appropriate), audio/visual recording and transmitting equipment (if appropriate).
6.Summary statement. On a separate sheet of paper, explain in not less than 300 words why you are applying for this Fellowship and what you expect to gain from the experience.
7.Two recent photographs (minimum passport size). Please place these photos in a separate secure envelope and affix them to the front of your application.
8.If available, include a copy of your passport. If you do not currently have a passport, you are advised to obtain one as soon as possible so that, if selected, you can immediately proceed to obtaining a journalist visa.

Greetings from the World Assembly of Youth headquarters in Melaka, Malaysia!

We are organizing a competition for all members and non members of World Assembly of Youth, who have a keen interest in Youth issues. The competition is based on the 14 priority youth issues that the UN set out to be achieved by 2015 so as to develop the youth. The issues are presented in a report entitled the World Programme of Action for Youth.

To this end the World Assembly of Youth (WAY) will be having a competition based on these issues. The idea is to have the competitors come up with presentations, reports, essays, discussions, poems or forms of arts that would portray how they would tackle the issues. Creativity in your ideas is the key. You can also find these issues on our website-http: //www.way. org.my/issues. html. This competition will run on a monthly base, with new topics suggested monthly.

Our first issue, which we would like to hear from you all, is on “Youth Poverty and Hunger Eradication” The rules are simple, anyone youthful can enter, preferable between the ages of 18 to 35 years. in data analysis, forecasting and economic policy design organized by ISET in

The 26th Annual Conference call for papers

The American Council for the Study of Islamic Societies (ACSIS) invites papers by intending participants for presentation at its next annual Conference. The thematic subject of the Conference is: Fourteen Centuries of Islam’s encounter with the West .

The Conference will be held on April 24-25, 2009 at the Wesley Center/Art Gallery, 1210 Stanford Drive , The University of Miami ( Coral Gables campus), FL 33124.

The recent tension between Islam and the West and the media coverage that this topic generated since the tragic events of September 11 th presented Islam as a hostile force and a threat to Western interests. Moreover, the proliferation of literature regarding the imminent “Clash of Civilizations” in the academic community, and in speeches made by Western politicians during the last decade regarding the “Islamic menace” and the imperative of fighting terrorism conveyed the message that the Western encounter with Islam was merely negative throughout the centuries. The purpose of the conference is to provide a more balanced picture of this interaction in all its manifestations, both positive and negative.

The papers presented at the conference are expected to cover the myriad facets of Islam’s relations with the West. The conference is aimed not only at tracing the origins of the conflict between Islam and the West, which goes back to the formative years of Islam but also at emphasizing the positive interaction between them. The papers to be presented in this conference are expected to examine the complex reasons for the episodes of conflict between the two civilizations and to explore the numerous ways in which Islam and the West co-existed and cooperated. Papers emphasizing the legacy of Islam and cultural exchange between the two civilizations would constitute an important contribution to the success of this conference.

Therefore, we invite proposals dealing with the following subtopics:
1. Doctrinal and religious differences and their impact on the relations between
Islam and the West
2. Military encounters between Islam and the West throughout history
3. Intellectual exchange between Islam and the West throughout history

*5th Elective Course in Oncology for Medical Students*

Following the success of the 4 previous courses, ECCO-the European Cancer
Organisation is organizing this summer (August 10-21) in Poznan (PL) the 5th
Elective Course in Oncology for Medical Students. The course is open to
medical students as of their 4th year of studies. The overall aim is to
provide an insight in the different disciplines in oncology from both a
theoretical and practical perspective. Theoretical sessions are given by
oncology specialists from various European universities who all have an
expertise in education. Visits of oncology departments are also part of the
programme as well as the development of a project in groups for presentation
at the end of the course. The University of Medical Sciences in Poznan where
the course will be taking place has granted 5 credits to the course.

The 24 students who will be selected to participate in the course will be
offered free registration and accommodation and will benefit from a travel
grant. It is thus a great opportunity for those with an interest in oncology
to get to know more about this topic and fine-tune their choice regarding a
possible specialization in this field.

The UNESCO Chair Institute of Comparative Human Rights at the University of Connecticut invites applications for the fifth annual International Leadership Programme: A Global Intergenerational Forum, to be held August 1 - 9, 2009 in Storrs, Connecticut. Applications must be received by February 27,
2009.

The Forum seeks to empower young leaders by involving them in finding solutions to emerging human rights problems, and nurturing individuals to be effective leaders in the field of human rights.

To this end, the Forum will:

• Introduce participants to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights
• Build a network of solidarity among human rights leaders
• Expand the knowledge relevant to human rights practice
• Provide tools and a platform for open debates
• Provide programmes, activities and processes necessary for human rights leadership
• Promote the sharing of experiences and understanding
• Showcase speakers on such topics as: health and human rights, education, the environment, the plight of child soldiers, the use of media, fundraising, conflict resolution and transformation; litigation and advocacy

The UNESCO Chair will provide all conference participants with dormitory housing, meals, ground transportation in Connecticut, resource materials and a certificate of participation.

Young people between the ages of 18-30, with community service experience, and with demonstrated ability to work on solutions to human rights problems, should apply. Relevant issues include, but are not limited to, human trafficking, the plight of children, refugees, hunger, HIV/AIDs, gender discrimination, racism, classism, the environment and peace education.

Conference will be held in English only. Fluency in English is required. Applicants will be selected based on the strength of their application essay, demonstrated commitment to human rights (practical/hands-on experience), potential impact on the individual and their potential contribution to the Forum, regional and gender representation.
