With these strong statements, the ambassador sought to rally other countries like his to push back against the weak agreement the conference had produced.

Is Arch Coal About to Mine Historic Blair Mountain?

In 2011, we saw the power every day people can have when we work together to stop a devastating project like the Keystone XL pipeline. But Keystone XL isn#8217;t the only major fossil fuel project that the industry is pushing. From building a major new coal plant in Kosovo to fracking in the north-eastern United States, the fossil fuel industry is going to any length to keep this dirty energy economy going.

One of the biggest fights here in the US is over mountaintop removal #8212; the dangerous form of coal mining that involves literally blowing off the top of mountains to get at the coal underneath. Blair Mountain in West Virginia has become ground zero for the struggle to end mountaintop removal #8212; a Keystone XL style symbol of an industry run amok.

We just got the press release below from our allies at Friends of Blair Mountain, the Sierra Club, the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition, and others who are working to save this important national treasure. According to some reports on the ground, it seems like Blair might be under threat once again (for a detailed look at all the different news coming out, check out this article by Ken Ward). Please take a minute to read about the latest threat to the mountain and share it with your friends to help spread the word:

Is Arch Coal About to Mine Historic Blair Mountain?

Local and National Groups Rally to Townspeople’s Defense

Logan, WV #8211; Residents of Blair, West Virginia have noticed increased activity from mining company Arch Coal around the historic Blair Mountain Battlefield site. Members of the town have become more and more concerned about Arch’s activities and fear they are moving forward with plans to mine the Blair Battlefield site. There have been reports of proposed buy outs of resident’s property, increasing industrial activity in the area and other preparations indicative of a move towards mining operations on the battlefield itself. Blair Mountain is the site of the largest civil insurrection in American history since the Civil War. In 1921 more than 10,000 coal miners fought forces backed by mining interests in an attempt to organize unions in Logan and Mingo County.

“In the late 1990s, Arch Coal came through and destroyed much of Blair with one mountaintop removal mining operation. The town went from about 700 people to about 90 today. Mountain top removal poisons the drinking water, destroys communities and makes people sick.” says Friends of Blair Mountain executive director, Brandon Nida, who currently lives in Blair. “For the sake of all that is good and right, we must save the people in this town, protect their homes, and save this historic mountain from the decimation and poison of mountaintop removal mining.”

Arch Coal, the second largest coal producer in the United States, has four planned operations that intrude into the Blair Mountain battlefield. They have already begun operations on the Left Fork surface mine, which sits directly adjacent to the battlefield.

According to retired coalminer Joe Stanley, “We know that they are moving quickly in the Blair area. We know that they have land agents trying again to buy from people who have already refused them. And we know they are blasting on the Left Fork permit. So, time is running out for the people of Blair and the battlefield.”

Appalachian filmmaker and Friends of Blair Mountain board member Mari-Lynn Evans says, “Arch Coal is moving the chess pieces in so that they can come in and blast away our heritage. If we wait until they are on the battlefield, it is too late. And they know that.”

The Battle of Blair Mountain was the largest civil uprising after the Civil War, fought due to protracted grievances between coal miners and the coal operators. It was finally brought to a halt after five days of heavy fighting along the Logan-Boone county lines. Federal troops were called in to quell the conflict.

#8220;Blair Mountain is a national treasure and a critical piece of America#8217;s history,#8221; said Mary Anne Hitt Director of the Sierra Club#8217;s Beyond Coal Campaign. #8220;Workers fought and died on its slopes for the simple right to represent themselves and win fair working conditions. We will not stop our fight to defend that land and their memory no matter what tactics Arch Coal may use to try and destroy it.#8221;

“Not only is our rich West Virginia history being destroyed by out-of-state coal operators, but the people around me here in Blair are being sickened, blasted, and generally run out of town. It’s not easy watching a town being killed, and unless something is done soon to stop the out-of-control companies, there won#8217;t be a Blair left in six months, or a Blair Mountain,” says Brandon Nida.

Urgent: Blair Mountain Under Threat

Blair Mountain is under threat right now from King Coal and it#8217;s likely that we#8217;re going to need your help in the next few days.

Blair has become a powerful symbol in the fight against mountaintop removal coal mining. Last summer, hundreds of people marched to Blair Mountain to commemorate the generations of coal miners who fought for their rights and join hands with a new generation of miners, young people, environmentalists, and every-day people to fight for our collective future. The march was an inspiration for our entire movement and was one of many sparks that helped ignite the fight against the Keystone XL pipeline.

Now, Blair Mountain may be under a real and immediate threat of destruction. This afternoon, I talked with Mari-Lynn Evans, a West Virginia activist and filmmaker who directed #8220;Coal Country.#8221; Mari reported that Arch Coal has blocked off all the entrances to Blair Mountain and it looks like they#8217;re making plans to start blasting on the mountain as soon as in the next couple days.

#8220;Apparently they#8217;ve put roads where they shouldn#8217;t put roads,#8221; said Mari. #8220;They#8217;ve set up target practice and are firing rifles behind those fences, just in case you didn#8217;t get the message. People are reporting that there are so many machines it#8217;s like ants crawling over that mountain.#8221;

If Arch Coal is making a move on Blair Mountain, it#8217;s going to take all of us #8212; in West Virginia and around the country #8212; to make sure that we put up a fight. The two people that can intervene on behalf of the mountain and the communities there are West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomlin and Senator Joe Manchin. In this case, the Governor could move faster than Senator Manchin, so he#8217;s the most likely target. Keep your eyes out for opportunities over the next few days to call in to the Governors office and show him that Blair Mountain is a national treasure that we#8217;re all dedicated to protect.

According to folks on the ground in West Virginia, Arch Coal isn#8217;t going after Blair Mountain#8217;s coal because it#8217;s the only way they can make a profit, there#8217;s plenty of other coal out there. They#8217;re going after it because they know that Blair has become a symbol of the movement against mountaintop removal.

#8220;They#8217;re saying to us, #8216;We#8217;ll blow up your past.
King Coal Ups The Ante In Oregon

The reports of King Coal’s demise appear to be exaggerated. At least for now.

After a year of fighting for coal export terminals proposals in Washington, coal companies are moving south into Oregon. Last week, it was announced that port officials at the Port of St. Helen’s, OR approved proposals to allow coal export terminals on the Oregon coast.

King Coal’s plan is take the coal being mined from leases in Wyoming and Montana, being opened up by the Obama’s Administration’s energy plan, transport it by rail to ports in the Pacific Northwest and ship it overseas to Asian markets for big profits. There are already active efforts in the Washington port towns of Longview and Bellingham.

The Port of St. Helen’s agreements with Houston-based port logistics company Kinder Morgan and Australia-based coal company Ambre Energy would ship up to 38 million tons a year and is the first proposal to be approved in Oregon. It’s also reported that the ports in Coos Bay, OR are also in talks with unnamed coal companies about coal export terminal development.

Earlier in the year, Oregon’s Gov. John Kitzhaber had stated no coal would be exported through the state without a “open vigorous public debate.” It’s pretty clear that King Coal and the Oregon political establishment don’t want that at all.

For environmental and climate activists in the Pacific Northwest, I’ll remind them of the words of the late Judy Bonds—“Fight Harder”

L.A.’s Dark Secret

via movieposter.com

In the 1974 classic Roman Polanski neo-noir film Chinatown, private detective Jake Gittes (played by Jack Nicholson) discovers one of LA’s dirty secrets.

He finds that wealthy developers are legally stealing precious water from poor struggling farmers in California’s central valley to hydrate the wealthy homes of Beverly Hills and a rapidly growing Los Angeles. It’s a sorted tale of corrupt local politics, exploited natural resources, an earlier version of the 1% vs. the 99% and seemingly the “future” of the city.

In a similar vein, despite growing green consciousness in southern California, the city of Los Angeles has another dirty secret and it is called coal. Furthermore, the electricity that the residents of L.A. are using everyday from coal is being burned at the expense of struggling Native communities in the American Southwest.

Despite a resolution passed by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the L.A. City Council to get L.A. off of coal, the Los Angeles Water and Power Department (LAWPD) still purchases almost half of its power from coal plants in Arizona and Utah. The resolution has led to two coal plants being shut down, but the LAPWD is still heavily invested in utility companies like Southern California Edison.

And while California itself has very few coal plants and no coal mines, it keeps its homes air conditioned and lights on through plants hundreds of miles away spewing pollution into the airways and waterways of the Southwest. This addiction has a particularly harsh impact on communities in the Four Corners area of New Mexico and Arizona as the Navajo Generating Station is located on Navajo land. Furthermore, companies like St. Louis based Peabody continue to mine coal reserves on the same land.

Stellar reporting by Altnet’s Josh Frank has highlighted this story and the struggle of Indigenous groups fighting to be heard on the impact of coal plants and mining on native land.

#8221;My community is heavily impacted by Salt River Project#8217;s coal and water extraction activities. SRP has extensive ties to Peabody Energy#8217;s massive mining operations and the Navajo Generating Station,#8221; says Louise Benally of nearby Black Mesa. #8220;Coal mining has destroyed thousands of archeological sites and our only water source has been seriously compromised. Their operations are causing widespread respiratory problems, lung diseases, and other health impacts on humans, the environment, and all living things.#8221;

Last month, protests erupted in Arizona around the Navajo Generating Station. 16 activists were arrested at the offices of corporate climate marauder and managing partner of the Navajo plant, the Salt River Project (SRP). SRB is also a member of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and sits on its board. ALEC is most known for aggressive legislative campaigns to undermine labor standards, climate science and civil liberties, as well as a driving force behind the racist Arizona law SB1070.

At the end of Chinatown, the wealthy developers won, covered up scandals both political and personal and Gittes was told “Forget about it Jake. It’s Chinatown.”

But the fight over LA’s future with dirty coal is far from complete, and we won’t be forgetting about the struggles of people most impacted by it for quite some time.

BREAKING: Keystone XL Denied!

In case you haven#8217;t heard the thunderous celebration by the North American climate movement, today the State Dept is set to outright reject the Keystone XL pipeline. #booyah

This is a reminder that people power works. Direct Action works. Social movements work. Grassroots organizing works. Lets take some time today to celebrate another huge victory.

Every time we win, it builds our resolve for the next fight. We know the fossil fuel industry owns Congress, and so far the Keystone XL campaign has been like playing Whack-A-Mole, or kinda like going to battle with a zombie who just won#8217;t die. There may yet be another stage of the fight, and there will definitely be other theaters of engagement heating up in the Tar Sands fights, like the Enbridge Northern Gateway. I#8217;m confident we#8217;ll be ready to take em on. Moments like this help us remember our power, and that its worth all the headaches and stress of movement building. So lets keep winning.

If you#8217;re in DC, help build the momentum by joining 500 referees blowing the whistle on congress being soaked in big oil Jan 24th. Or this friday, you can join the J20 (January 20) #occupy actions all around the world mobilizing to take on dirty corporate interests. Here in the Bay Area we will be shutting down the SF financial district with nonviolent direct action (check out the hot Lady Gaga outreach flashmob video here).

Here#8217;s a quick sampling of the breaking coverage of the Keystone XL victory from Bill McKibben, and on Globe and Mail, Washington Post, Mother Jones, Huffington Post, ThinkProgress, Grist, Daily Kos, and Politico.

Between April 17th and April 20th, Rising Tide North America along with friends and allies around the world commemorated the BP Oil Disaster with days of action against extraction.

From the BP Shareholder#8217;s meeting in London to a 300 person occupation of the Dept. of Interior in Washington D.C. to direct actions in Chicago, Oregon, Ft. Worth, TX, New Zealand and lots of other places around the world, the direct action wing of the climate movements is putting #8220;action#8221; back into #8220;climate action.#8221;

Here#8217;s a new video about that week.

Our network and allies are organizing direct action campaigns all over the continent. Our principles remain focused on bringing grassroots radical direct action into the climate movement, standing in solidarity with those most impacted by fossil fuel extraction and climate change, and challenging false solutions to climate change, including market-based false solutions.

Check us out if you want to get involved.

Power Shift 2011: Join The Briefcase Brigades On April 27

Our guest blogger is Noland Chambliss, a member of the Briefcase Brigades.

Ten thousand young people descended on Washington for the Power Shift conference this weekend to call for bold action from government leaders to address climate change and create a clean energy economy for all. Many of these young people had a more specific, and personal, message for Congress: “I need a job.”

Inspired by passionate speeches addressing youth unemployment by AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka and green jobs visionary Van Jones, the members of the Briefcase Brigades are bringing attention to the epidemic of un- and under-employed millennials:

We are ready to work. We know the economy is in bad shape. We know the country is in trouble. We want to help. But first, we need jobs.

Watch the story of the Briefcase Brigades at Power Shift 2011:

On April 27th, while Congress is in recess and members are back in their districts, young people are creating Briefcase Brigades and going to their offices all around the country to demand Congress prioritize jobs over budget cuts.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are over 5 million young people who are out of work. That doesn’t count people with unpaid internships, people with low-wage jobs that don’t have health insurance, and people who went back to school because they couldn’t find a job.

Chances are you know one of these young people. Someone living with their parents long after they decided they wanted to move out. Someone working their second or third unpaid internship. Someone working several part time jobs, with no health insurance, who still struggles to make ends meet.

What if instead, these young people were given an opportunity to address some of the problems we hear about on television everyday? What if they were given the opportunity to help develop and deploy renewable energy technology? What if they were put to work repairing our crumbling infrastructure? What if they were given a chance to help design and build new products to help us compete with the rest of the world?

Then those youth would be working, paying taxes, paying their own rent, buying things, opening bank accounts and making investments. They might even start their own businesses and create more new jobs. They would be helping to get the economy working again.

Many young people, such as the leaders of WeatherizeDC and Solar Mosaic who came to the Power Shift conference, are already taking steps to create jobs and build a strong green economy. But we should not be left to try and solve the jobs crisis alone. Our elected officials, our representatives, should be a partner to young people in this challenge.

It’s time for Congress to stop talking about cuts and start talking about jobs.

Join us on April 27th. Get dressed up for a job interview, bring your resumé and a briefcase, and a few of your friends too. Go to your local Congressperson’s office and ask them what their plan is to address youth unemployment. Tell them we are ready to work, and ask them “Where are the jobs?”

Sign up to join an event or host on of your own at www.BriefcaseBrigades.org and follow @april27brigades on Twitter.

Explaining what happens at the UNFCCC Conference of Parties is difficult at the best of times. Journalists, Civil Society organisations and governments struggle to translate the technical language of international climate policy into understandable public information. Young people can help distill the essence of the negotiations ndash; and sometimes into video form.

In this example, the UK Youth Climate Coalition have summarised the COP16 Cancun talks in this short clip. Surprisingly and depressingly accurate.

UKYCC Video: “Copenhagen was never going to be the end.”

I wanted to share one of my favorite videos from the chaotic two weeks in Copenhagen this December. Itrsquo;s from the United Kingdom Youth Climate Coalition (UKYCC), one of our strongest 350.org allies, straight up kick-ass climate organizers, and dear friends. In the video, Tom Smith, a twenty-year old member of the UKYCC delegation that came to the climate meetings, walks us through the final hours of the talks. Take a look:

Tom shares the sense of frustration and disappointment that many of us in Copenhagen and around the world shared. As he says, at the end of the meetings that there was a perception that the talks ldquo;hadnrsquo;t moved anything.rdquo; The perception of failure was all the more heartbreaking because of what we all know is at stake if climate change is left unchecked. Tom tells the story of Elisha, a 350.org organizer from the Maldives who came to Copenhagen to share her story with delegates and the media. As she told the media in an interview in Copenhagen, she may not have a home by the time she is 40, forcing her and any children she may have to live as environmental refugees (Elisharsquo;s now back in the Maldives continuing to build a movement for climate justice in her own country and working with 350.org to keep that movement building around the world; you can see a picture of her and Jamal, another 350.org organizer from the Maldives, below).

Yet, despite the disappointments there is still much to give hope. Tom describes talking with a Bolivian delegate who came up to him at a protest outside the conference center and said that while Copenhagen had not been a success on the inside, the meetings had been a massive success on the outside. That is in large part thanks to all of you. You helped build the movement that sent all of us to Copenhagen with unprecedented momentum and solidarity. Over the weekend of December 12, you helped organize over 3,000 candlelight ldquo;vigils for survivalrdquo; in over a hundred countries around the world. That day, in Copenhagen, 100,000 people marched in the streets for climate justice. And as I write this post, citizens in communities around the world are making plans to make 2010 even more powerful.

As Tom says, ldquo;Irsquo;m not a genius or scientist or politician, but Irsquo;m here.rdquo; He meant here in Copenhagen, but I think he could have also meant here on Earth. In the end, climate change affects us all, no matter where we stand. We may not all be geniuses, or seasoned activists or organizers, but we can be here to help. Copenhagen, as Tom points out, was never going to be the end. It was just the beginning.

DOPENHAGEN: Forests Fail Fast but We Move Forward

Bloodshed with REDD. Talks of saving the worldrsquo;s last remaining forests and the communities who depend on them came to a grinding halt at the end of the Copenhagen Climate Negotiations. Initial agreement on a global target to reduce deforestation and other safeguards were either moved from operational part of the text to the preamble or were deleted altogether.

The REDD agreements were being touted as an easy document for nations to agree on, so it doesnrsquo;t come as a surprise that most working on the initiative were deeply dismayed by the results.

Whatrsquo;s Left? Other processes intended to address the rapid destruction of the world’s tropical forests, including the UN-REDD initiative and the World Bank Forest Carbon Partnership Facility, will continue but without the safeguards that were put forth in the initial global REDD agreement. This patchwork approach runs the risk of simply shuffling deforestation from one location to another, failing to reduce overall emissions from deforestation, and failing to protect the people who live in and around forested ecosystems.

According to the three-page draft text published by The Guardian, negotiations on how to handle worldrsquo;s forests will continue into 2010, but it is uncertain whether the draft agreement on REDD negotiated in Copenhagen will be used as the basis for those negotiations. Moreover, the weak paragraph on forests in the draft text represents a backward step in comparison to the Bali Action Plan mandate, which prioritized the protection of forests over the preservation of logging interests.

All this being said, organizations like Global Witness and Rainforest Action Network are gearing up for continued forest protection. Additionally, money is being allocated to promising REDD programs, such as the Rukinga Wildlife Reserve in Kenya, the first REDD project in Africa. More on forests coming soonhellip;

4.12am A group of us are following the final plenary inside the Bella Centre in Copenhagen. The atmosphere has erupted in the last hour, and wersquo;re going to give a play-by-play as things develop from here. For detailed updates as it happens, follow @redman0380 @zoecaron @juanhoffmaister @matthewfcarroll @lizmmcdowell @carolineclimate on twitter.

The story so farhellip;

Chairman Rasmussen did an interesting opening dance, introducing the infamous ldquo;Presidentrsquo;s Textrdquo; that the media so willingly lapped up as a done deal and amazing breakthrough earlier today as the official outcome to the negotiations. He had the nerve to describe the draft text as having been put together by a ldquo;representative group of leaders from all regions around the worldrdquo;, then he told delegates there would be 60 minutes for consultations by regional groups and closed the meeting.

Venezuela starts banging on their desk continuously, as Rasmussen is leaving until the audience in the plenary hall and other government delegates start clapping. Rasmussen comes back on the mic, apologising for having accidentally (hmm) missed a point of order by Venezuela.

One by one, countries respond to both the process, and content of the text:

Tuvalu declares the COP15 process completely undemocratic, conducted in closed door sessions, and slams the target of 2 degrees for failing to be sufficient to ensure their survival. ldquo;We are being offered 30 pieces of silver to betray our children. Our future is not for sale.rdquo; They make it absolutely clear that they cannot accept this decision, and there is no consensus. (Side note: itrsquo;s important they stated this, as it means the chair canrsquo;t pretend he thought there was a consensus to force an agreement through.)

Venezuela is outraged, and explained they hit the desk as in an earlier meeting they requested to speak but were not given the chance. UN cannot be replaced by a small group of countries forcing a deal on sovereign nations.

Bolivia: ldquo;How can one hour actually allow us the time to consider the implications for the people we represent? Does this represent the democracy of the United Nations hellip; we are seeing decisions taken in a dictatorial way and this is not the way that the world should discuss the future of the planet.

Cuba: makes it clear that no additional consultations are needed, and there is no consensus on the document; also calls out the lack of commitments from developed countries, and the voilation of sovereign equality demonstrated by the process.

Costa Rica: the proposal cannot be considered as the work of COP.

Nicaragua: Proposes suspending the negotiations until July 2010.

5.01am Meeting reopened, everyone gets confused with the chairrsquo;s proposed way of moving forward and a Nicaragua counter proposal, then suspended again.

5.28am Proposal is to take the text as an information document (not a COP decision) and keep COP open.

The general gloom could be a reflection of the faces of many activists here in Copenhagen, many of them huddled in the Oksnehallen warehouse in downtown Copenhagen, exiled from the Bella Center where the actual UN negotiations are taking place.

In the last few days, 99% of civil society participants have been denied access to the talks over supposed security concerns, forcing groups like ourselves to improvise (lucky for 350.org, wersquo;ve got an incredible team still on the inside: Subhashni Raj, one of our 350.org organizers, who is now officially on the Fijian delegation, and Mike Tidwell, who has a press badge from his excellent show at Earth Beat radio and is leading a small media team thatrsquo;s still working the press room).

Yet, despite a lack of direct access and a pervailing sense that developing countries are failing to provide real leadership, many of the people that I have been talking to here in Copenhagen remain doggedly hopeful. Not because they expect a miracle speech from Obama or a breakthrough between the US and China. Not because they think the EU will come up with an innovative finance package or that Australia and others will stop bullying smaller countries. In fact, their hope has little to do with our supposed ldquo;leadersrdquo; at all. It has to do with all of you.

Last night, I took part in a candlelight vigil at the Osknehallen warehouse to solemnly mark a day of fasting around the world that thousands of you took part in. At the vigil, Gopal Dayeneni, an organizer with Movement Generation whorsquo;s been working for years with social movements around the world, told the crowd that in his eyes the movement for climate justice and global equity has never seemed more united. Over the past few weeks, said Gopal, we have seen unprecedented collaboration and solidarity not just between organizers here in Copenhagen, but between citizens all over the planet.

I know I feel that sense of unity here in Copenhagen and I hope you feel it wherever you are, as well.

In less than an hour, hundreds of us will gather in a snowy courtyard outside the Osknehallen to stand with candles and torches and form the words ldquo;Climate Shamrdquo; and then transform into the words ldquo;Climate Shamerdquo; for an aerial photograph. The image will express the frustration and anger that we want to convey to the world leaders who are blocking progress here at the talks yet still trying to spin Copenhagen as some sort of success. We know thatrsquo;s just greenwash and we need to get the world media to tell that story as well mdash; AP, Reuters, and many other media outlets have confirmed that theyrsquo;ll show to take the photo and send it around the world.

Yet, wersquo;ll also be forming another message: ldquo;Climate Hope.rdquo; Itrsquo;s not a message for our leaders or for the media, itrsquo;s a message for our movement. Itrsquo;s a reminder that this fight isnrsquo;t over and that despite the odds stacked against us, wersquo;re still keeping hope alive. Martin Luther King, Jr., who faced a lot of dissapointments and setbacks in his life, once said, ldquo;We must accept finite disappointment, but we must never lose infinite hope.rdquo;

Copenhagen will be a dissapointment, thatrsquo;s for sure, but this movement has been a resounding success in so many ways. When Irsquo;m standing in the cold this evening, Irsquo;ll be thinking of all of the citizens around the world who braved cold, wind and rain, burning heat, and yes, numerous setbacks and dissapointments, to take part in the actions and events wersquo;ve done together this year, especially on October 24 and just last weekend.

Irsquo;m infinitely grateful for all the work that so many people have contributed to this effort. Irsquo;ll end now with another King quote that comes to mind: ldquo;Keep moving.rdquo;

I know this is technically old-hat, a whole week old, or a dinosaur in blogging-years, but this is a really wonderful video that captures a powerful moment, and I wanted to be sure to share this with all the youth who read IGHIH.

On Monday 7th December 2009, seventeen year old Christina Ora spoke on behalf of the global youth movement at the plenary session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Longterm Cooperative Action at COP15.

Christina is a high school student from Honiara, Solomon Islands. She passionately told an audience of thousands, including negotiators from all over the world, that it was time for action. Christina is a member of Project Survival Pacific, and is supported by GetUp Australia.

Watch this video, and get inspired by a young woman who has come to COP to fight for the survival of her homeland.
