Love in a time of HIV

The movies were used to celebrate World AIDS Day on 12/1/09. The first of the series shown was the South Africa Idol. The rest of the series were shown individually the following week (12/7-12/10). The movies were shown to generate discussion on the HIV epidemic and how it relates to the rest of the world.
A total of 92 participants were shown the movie in its increments (one country a day). The participants were HIV+ clientele, High school students, Human service professionals and people from the local community. The movies were shown at our HIV+ clientele drop in center named Connections in Hartford Ct.
Participants reported loving the series and how it was put together. Many of the participants were moved by the individual stories that were captured in this series. The South Africa Idol one, which dealt with disclosure, seemed to move the HIV+ clientele as they kept stating things in the movie that they could relate to. Disclosure of the HIV status was one of those “uncomfortable” situations that all of them had a story that mirrored it.
The rest of the series was received well also. The manner in which the series dealt with how HIV impacts certain communities at large was a topic of discussion. Russian Intravenous Drug users who want to have a child? Indian HIV+ dating services that help HIV+ people find each other? A New York teen, which contracted the HIV virus via no fault of her own? The London couple wanting to seek a child via medical practices there were unheard of years ago? All topics in the series were well put together and demonstrated life in a very real light.
There were a couple of students who attended the series who later began calling our office trying to volunteer their time. There were two students who came in for HIV testing and also took condoms from our office to use or distribute into their school communities. We now have teachers interested in having HIV education in their schools along with encouraging their students to learn more about the epidemic.
We here at AIDS Project Hartford want to thank the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA) for giving us the opportunity to show this incredibly well put together series. It is our belief that we need to continue educating the community in the importance of prevention. This movie definitely helped us relay such a message. So again Thank You very much. We look forward to collaborating with your agency and others like it to get the word out. You should be proud.

This event is for University students who are interested in discussing how HIV and AIDS are affecting Canada and development abroad.

Speakers from several different aspects of HIV: Positive Women, Harm reduction, Youth, Legal issues, Research, and Children.

Africa's Children – Africa's Future (AC-AF) envisions a future in which all children have the opportunity to reach their fullest potential. To achieve this goal AC-AF currently works within African communities to help build a better, sustainable future for the most vulnerable children in our Orphan and Vulnerable Children Support Programme (OVCS). AC-AF also works with high-school aged youth around the world in our u+me=we programme, which aims to educate and empower students about the AIDS epidemic and related issues, while encouraging a creative cross-cultural dialogue.

NFP Update

As the United States National Focal Point for GYCA, the first and the foremost task I undertook was making GYCA known to the youth. I sent out emails to various public health, nursing, and other medical schools letting them know about the existence of GYCA. I sent out brief information about what GYCA does and how joining it would be beneficial for both, the members and GYCA.

Secondly, I am working towards interviewing Diane Reeve, an AIDS victim who was interviewed by the ABC’s 20/20 channel and also by Oprah on her show. Diane Reeve has agreed to interview for GYCA and help us in any way she can. I am currently preparing questions for her that are youth-centric and which will focus on youth issues.

Thirdly, I have recently received the DVD – Love in the times of AIDS. I am planning on showing this DVD in Public Health schools. I am trying to contact schools who have courses on HIV/AIDS and that would be interesting in showing these short documentaries to their students.
