What inspires you?

What inspires me is making a safe environment for my community. I think its important to make a difference as well as be involved in my community.

Tell us about an issue that matters to you and how you became aware and involved.

My name is Ashley Garcia. I decided to dedicate my Silver Award to the Cornwall Dog Park, located at 15 Muser Drive, Cornwall New York. We hoped to make an impact in letting people know how important it is to maintain and fix a dog park for a humans best friend. I worked with Kayla on my Silver Award. Our mission was to impact many people especially dog owners. It is important for them to know that you should let your dog play in a clean open space. We decided to address the dog park because my partner and I both have dogs. This issue that we experienced in the dog park that there was a poor drainage system. Water from rain was building up and becoming either muddy or icy on the covered patio area depending on the weather. This is a hazardous condition and a reason why dog owners may not bring their dogs to the park for fear of slipping and falling. Dog owners have been taking care of the dog park as well. I was the one who orchastrated intalling the gutters. I had to organize how much supplies we needed as well as making sure we had enough volunteers. My partner, kayla was in charge of the clean-up day at the park. During this project we have encountered some obstacles. We originally wanted to plant a tree to provide more shade to the area. However we decided that the mud/ice condition was more important to focus on. We forged ahead to fix this hazardous condition by purchasing gutters that would drain the water so it would not pool solved this by making a quick trip to Lowe’s with what remained of our money. We were featured in our town’s local, they talked about what were doing, and our journey of the silver award.I learned about myself that I can make a little difference that will make a big impact on my community. Overall I am ecstatic over helping my community by improving the Cornwall Dog Park.
