What inspires you?

There is a countless number of people who have inspired, and still continues to inspire me till this very day. If I had to choose one person who I know personally, would be John Gully, the founder of EverestTreks. As explained below, I had the opportunity to travel with twenty odd students from New Zealand, to Mt. Everest, Nepal. I had many genuine conversations with John, who truly inspired me with the morals he held. This made me realize how unnecessary my materialistic view is, and enhanced the way in which I view things in life.

Tell us about an issue that matters to you and how you became aware and involved.

In April this year, I was thankful enough to be granted an opportunity to visit and trek Mt. Everest, Nepal. The experience was undoubtedly tough, but inspired in so many ways that I cannot describe everything in full details. But, the main factor that triggered the most sympathy and taught me the fulfilness and happiness of sharing was the Nepali children. I could not walk past a single street without having a young girl or boy, no more than 10 years old, dangling on my arm, begging for money, or even a piece of banana from the supermarket across the road. This provoked me to initiate a service club at my school to help underpriviledged children at a decile one school. I was introduced to "TakingItGlobal" from a website, and thought it would be a perfect opportunity to widen my horizon and become more aware of social and global issues, especially those concerning children who are deprived of even the very basic rights.

Share your perspectives on what makes a good leader.

First, I am a good listener, and this is the one factor that I believe is the most important for becoming a leader. I am always available to listen to others and is open for new, creative ideas. I gather various suggestions and improve the quality of my service clubs, and provide improved levels of service to the children I am associated with. I also have a very broad perspective, not only on my own country, but on the whole world. My perspective was developed through various trips overseas, especially the trip to Nepal that I mentioned above. I think "TakingItGlobal" is fundamentally about being "global" and having an extensive mindset that I can utilize to deal with international issues.

Do you think TakingITGlobal can help you achieve some of your goals? Have we already? Please tell us how.

My goal of becoming a doctor was set by the morals that I hold in life. Through various experiences, I was taught how fulfilling it is to be able to share a portion of what I have, and to teach with the knowledge I have gained through my lifetime. I think "TakingItGlobal" will enable to gain further knowledge about the issues I am greatly concerned about and interested in, and I think this very opportunity can serve as a stepping stone to achieving my goal of becoming a doctor.
