After spending time brainstorming initial concepts on each of the MDGs (a go around where each student was at each MDG for 5-8 minutes), students were given substantially more time to concentrate on one MDG. Presentations identified several key issues on the MDGs.
Discussions in the following days revealed that many of these concepts were new to students, but that they had learned enough to begin to think deeper than one goal and see how they are related and complex. The Action Guide helped to provide hope that things can change and the personal stories in the magazine were interesting and put a person to each goal.

The Move Your World Open Forum began to meet the goals which were set at the time of proposing the event. There was a passionate group of young people who understood that it was important to come to a better understanding of the MDGs through meaningful discussions. Participants brainstormed for 5-8minutes on each of the MDGs and then focused for longer on one selected MDG and then presented to the rest of the group.
The kits and supplimentary CIDA MDG pages gave students many concrete ideas about people taking action on the MDGs. This was useful as they were so new to these ideas that "solutions" started as a barrier to their thinking, but quickly became overcome.
While it is difficult to measure if the students created profiles of their own or surf the site in order to connect with students globally, event planning the day after the Forum indicated that the students were prepared to take their new knowledge and put their efforts into action.

The Open Forum was held on the Tuesday of a 5 day course, designed with time to organize and hold "an action" on the Friday. The Forum was a fabulous tool to get students to quickly have a comprehensive understanding of the main issues of international development and put their heads together to think of solutions and the complexities of the problems. Being 13-15 and just introduced to many substantial problems, students did not feel motivated or able to tackle issues on a national or global scale. Examples of other organizations were helpful, but not inspiring enough to feel empowered to do something significant on a wide scale. The Forum did, however, provide time for students to begin thinking about their potential at a local level. Often their schools where mentioned as a good venue for raising funds or awareness.

Although the Forum took place within the vicinity of somewhere where like-minded students where gathering on these issues, it was difficult to convince other intructors that they could come and participate in this Forum and it would be useful. Funny enough, I feel it was a lack of knowledge from my peers about the significance of the MDGs that made them hesitate in spending an afternoon discussing them. Also, I felt there was a general lack of "insignificance" surrounding the utility of a "guide" for taking action. This expereince emphasized the importance of a thoughtful and impact centered approach to an activity (such as teaching a course with a clear outcome and goals) and a current model which seems to be mish-mashed and not fulfilling the "turning knowledge into action" need which education should address. To overcome these obstacles I showed them the tools and how we would be using them and ended up hosting the Forum with only my class. It was one of our best classes and resulted in clear action planning -- something I am not sure others could say about their courses.

Not being extremely familiar with all of TIG's applications and website components, I found a visit with Madeline at the office to be VERY helpful in clarifying things and going through the site with me in person. The documents were great references afterwards, but given my preferred learning style a chat about the Forum made things much easier. Additionally, the examples in the Action Guide of other Canadian organizations working on the MDGs was useful for the students. I supplimented this with MDG Sheets for each goal on the CIDA website to give students more ideas of how Canadians were making a difference overseas.
