Citizenship is the status of being a member of society, and the rights and duties that status encompasses. Therefore, global citizenship works towards moral and ethical understanding of individuals or groups, relative to responsibilities within different communities on a global platform. TakingITGlobal (TIG) and the University of Manitoba are both working towards improving the Global Citizenship portfolio of Canadian students.
TakingITGlobal.org is an online database for young people interested in making a difference. TIG's highly interactive website (www.takingitglobal.org) provides a platform for expression, connection to opportunities, and support for action in local and global communities. Through its website, youth can access, workshops, panels, lectures and discussion groups. TIG facilitates a free exchange of opinions, hoping to stimulate a sense of responsibility and activate ideas to re-envision worldy relationships. TIG embraces the opportunity to use online communities for personal expression and self-actualizing politics to better help student develop standpoints that they find relatable and effective. Online technologies like www.takingitglobal.org allow youth to easily engage with other youth from around the world, not just as a Caandian citizen, but as a global citizen. For example, TIG holds monthly online and offline workshops across CAnada to educate youth about issues such as climate change, human rights, and HIV/AIDS.
TakingITGlobal is re-defining citizenship as a dynamic social construction that reflects the changing social and political landscape, and strives towards global equality, acknowledging that many forms of citizenship operate in international societies. The University of Manitoba and TakingITGlobal see the most effective way to nurture global citizenship is to make citizenship learning an essential part of Canada's schools and an important component of being an engaged and educated student in a post-secondary context.
