Global Youth Service Day Celebrations in Taiwan

April 26, 27 and 28 marked the Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) Celebration in Taiwan. As everywhere around the world, Taiwan recognized the importance and the outstanding contribution of young people in the field of volunteer work by organizing events in seven separate regions to which some 10 000 youths participated.

On April 28, in Taoyuan County, a ceremony presided by the County Chief was organized to reward some 160 youths who distinguished themselves for completing the training required prior to start volunteer work. The same day, in Taipei, another ceremony was held to mark the event, which President Chen Shui-bian attended in company of Ms. Liz Burns, world President of the International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE). In his speech, President Chen urged the youths to give a little of their time to do volunteer work, stressing that everyone¡¦s small contribution can have a positive impact on society as a whole.

GYSD, which is celebrated in 151 countries around the world, is the result of the efforts of Youth Service America, the Global Youth Action Network (GYAN) and a consortium of 32 international organizations and 100 national organizations.
